Daybreak Releases Additional Lifetime Subscription Offer

You may recall last week we mentioned that Daybreak had a limited time, limited quantity lifetime subscription offer for a few of their older MMOs. Well, just before Christmas on Monday they announced that they had run out of the 4,000 that they had originally made available. Today though, they’ve announced that you’ll have one more chance to get in on this offer. They’ve released an additional 2,000 lifetime subscriptions.

For anyone keeping track at home, that means that if they sell all 6,000 total that has been made available they will bring in 1.8 million dollars. Not too bad at all. This offer is only available for a few more days. It ends on December 31st or whenever they run out. If this is something you want to get in on you shouldn’t wait. This is clearly a very popular offer, it only took 5 days for 4,000 subscriptions to be sold. These could very well sell just as quickly. If they sell at the same rate you can expect them to run out before dinner on Sunday.

The massive popularity of this offer may come as a surprise to many but with Everquest quickly approaching its 20th anniversary it really shouldn’t be. Everquest and Everquest 2 both have a large, very dedicated, very loyal fanbase. These fans would also generally be older than your typical gamer and are more likely to have the kind of disposable cash that is being looked for in the middle of the most expensive time of the year. It would be tragic to see something to Everquest so close to such a monumental date. With so many rumors that have been flying around recently it is very possible that people are buying in simply to make sure that their favorite game, whichever one it may be is still going for another few years.

Play of the Fortnight: Should Blizzard Add an Overwatch Role Limit?

An idea that has been fired around the Overwatch community for some time is the concept of Blizzard adding an Overwatch role limit. While it would probably only be applied to competitive games, what would a role limit mean for the game and its meta? In this Play of the Fortnight, we discuss potential pros and cons that a role limit could have on the state of Overwatch.

Overwatch Role Limit

First of all, what’s a role limit?

Proponents of the Overwatch role limit suggest that there’s either a minimum or maximum number of tanks, damage, and healers. Some players want both a minimum and maximum, others want just a limit on a specific role. In an ideal world, a role limit would likely mean there has to be at least one of each role on the team (or at least one tank and one healer). Another suggestion players have proposed is that there’s a minimum of one tank and healer with a maximum of two.

There are various reasons players suggest a role limit. The biggest one for there being a minimum of each role is that frequently tanks and healers are seen as key to the game but also undesirable for many players to actually play. Having a minimum of one per team would mean, in theory, more viable team comps.

However, the request for a maximum number means preventing team comps that players find tough to go up against. For example, a team comp known as “GOATS” has been lamented by the community lately. This comp involves three tanks and three healers, usually Reinhardt, Zarya, D.Va, Lucio, Brigitte, and Moira. The team will charge down the opponents and single out one enemy at a time. A role limit would most likely prevent this kind of comp from flourishing.

What would be the pros of an Overwatch role limit?

Obviously, having a minimum of one tank and one healer on the team would mean having a balanced comp. Most comps have this as their backbone; it’s very rare to see team comps that don’t have at least one tank and one healer.

Having a maximum of two tanks and two healers would, in theory, prevent arguments between players who try to select roles when they’re already filled. It would also mean no crazy team comps to go up against like GOATS or the former four tank two support meta. There’s still some flexibility in allowing teams to drop one tank or one healer to fill in an extra damage dealer.

However, with all of this said, there seems to be more cons than there are pros to a role limit.

Team comp creativity would disappear

One of the exciting things about Overwatch is being able to come up with weird and wonderful teams. That could be a new way to obliterate the enemy team or just an interesting counter to the meta. It’s fun seeing new comps emerge as patches change the balance between heroes. Dive comp and GOATS are just some examples of the fun combinations players have come up with.

If we have a role limit that effectively strongly encourages a 2-2-2 comp, we would lose out on all of that creativity. There would still be combos between heroes, and a little flexibility with changing out a tank or healer for something with more punch. Ultimately, though, players would be much more restricted.

Would this mean less troll compositions? Probably, but is that worth losing out on all of the interesting ways to build a team? We don’t think so.

Disconnects in hero select would soar

Picture this: a Genji main connects to the game now. Genji is already selected. He considers leaving, but at least he can pick another damage dealer. So he does, and while his team might complain at him, he can ignore them and play what he’s used to.

Now role limits are in place. He joins the game and not only is Genji already selected, but all the damage dealer slots are taken. He now has to tank or heal. What does he do now? It’s not a sure thing that the player would disconnect, but it’s significantly more likely. Players are creatures of habit, and even if they’re not one-trick ponies, they’ll have a role they play almost exclusively. Taking that away from them won’t make them more likely to branch out. It’ll make them disconnect. If they do, we can only hope they do it early enough to cancel the game without wasting anyone’s time.

Couldn’t they make a new queue system to fix this?

Blizzard could certainly add a queuing system similar to the one in League of Legends now. Allowing players to queue up as a specific role means that they know they get what they want. There could always be an additional “flex” role that means players would fill. However, this already somewhat exists in the group finder tool.

Adding another layer seems unnecessary. Queue times would likely go up for damage, while tanks and healers would get queued up right away. Sure, that might encourage more people to play tank and healer in the first place, but it’s still going to make the experience quite unpleasant for at least a large portion of the community.

We don’t think a role limit is the best way to counter issues with team comp in Overwatch. While it’s true that players often don’t pick what’s “needed” and instead lock whoever they want, a role limit would impose too much of a restriction on the creativity most of us have grown to love in Overwatch.

It would, however, be nice to see Blizzard doing more to help prevent the trolling that many players complain about in competitive. Proactively helping the community by providing them with tools that allow them to prevent it in the first place would likely be easier and make more sense than simply banning people for picking the “wrong” hero. Who decides what is a “bad choice”?

Closing Thoughts

We don’t think Blizzard is likely to impose an Overwatch role limit any time soon. Even so, it is certainly something members of the community have requested often. There are a few positives to having a restriction like this in place, but we feel these are significantly outweighed by the negatives. One day we’d like to see more changes to the way queuing works to improve team synergy, but for now there are just some downsides players are always going to be faced with in solo queue.

2018 in Battle Royale Games

There is no denying that 2018 was the year of the Battle Royale. It has dominated just about every conversation about gaming the entire year. For a good reason too, the genre is insanely popular. But, while it has been a great year there have also been more than a few Battle Royale titles shut down. So grab yourself a drink and sit back as we take a look at 2018 in Battle Royale games.

The year had a bit of a rough start as the news came out that H1Z1 had lost 90% of its player base since July 2017. Of course, a lot of the blame for that can be placed on the success of Fortnite and PUBG, so really as far as the genre goes it wasn’t a terrible thing. As the year progressed H1Z1 would go on to have the part of the game that wasn’t a Battle Royale shut down after the game moved to a new internal studio at Daybreak.

This was also the year that Ninja and Drake broke the record on Twitch for the most-viewed stream while playing Fortnite. At its peak, it was watched by 628,000 people around the world. As of this month, Ninja is the most followed Streamer on Twitch. He has more than 12 million followers and each time he streams he averages 53,000 viewers. For those wondering, Ninja started out the year making approximately $500,000 a month from streaming and later told ESPN that he’s now making nearly 7 figures a month. Oh to be Ninja just for a month.

2018 was also the year of lawsuits in the Battle Royale genre. PUBG sued NetEase for copyright infringement with their games Knives Out and Rules of Survival. In turn just a few days later NetEase threatened to sue everyone who wasn’t PUBG because…well, we’re still not really sure what they were thinking about there actually. Basically, their argument boiled down to “you took the idea that we took and made it a little different and hurt the market in doing so.” Which is exactly as stupid as it sounds. PUBG then went and sued Fortnite for plagiarizing its UI and items. Then, because 2018 wasn’t crazy enough already three stars are now suing Fortnite over the sale of emotes of their dances. Backpack Kid, Milly 2, and Alfonso Ribeiro are all going after Fortnite in a move that is seen by many to be nothing more than an attempt at getting some of that sweet Fortnite cash.

Speaking of Fortnite cash, in March Fortnite became the largest free to play console game of all time both in revenue generated and monthly active users. The game is currently sitting at the number 4 spot in terms of monthly revenue for both console and PC games. Towards the end of the year, it looked as though Fortnite had hit its peak in revenue as revenue growth slowed significantly. Of course, when you talk about revenue slowing down you have to take into consideration that Fortnite makes $2 million a day just on iOS. The last number we had was in October stating that Fortnite on iOS made $300 million worldwide just on iOS…in 200 days. Oh to be Epic just for a day.

How are they doing this? Well, according to a study done by Newzoo, Battle Royale players are more likely to spend money on games. In fact, they’re more invested all around than other competitive gamers. They’re more likely to watch esports, spend money, and spend more than 6 hours a week in game. Does that 6 hours a week number feel a bit low to anyone else?

While Fortnite is helping Tim Sweeney live everyone’s dream of swimming in money the Battle Royale genre has suffered a few losses this year. The first Battle Royale to die was Radical Heights, the 80s themed Battle Royale game that was supposed to save Boss Key Studios. Unfortunately what was released was incomplete and, according to those who played it, not all that great. The game closed not long after it was released as the studio collapsed. The result of which made founder CliffyB, of Gears of War fame, declare he would never make another game. He isn’t the first developer to have said this though, so we’ll wait and see if he follows through.

Radical Heights

SOS, upon seeing the massive success of the Battle Royale genre decided to switch gears and transition into a Battle Royale game. It was a complete disaster as none of the fans actually wanted that. So the game was review bombed and it didn’t take long for the game to shut down. They did try to fix things by bringing back the classic game, but for many fans, it was already too late. The Culling 2 was canceled after a less than stellar reception. It was a game that no one really wanted, and even the developers admitted this. Islands of Nyne also recently announced that they can no longer continue to develop the game and it is now in maintenance mode on Steam. The game is free to play and will continue to be available for the time being. With the market being largely dominated by a couple of big games it is an undeniable fact that we will see more Battle Royale games close in 2019, we just have to wait and see which ones it will be.

Much to our surprise, only a few MMOs have jumped on the Battle Royale bandwagon. For a while, those of us at MMOGames feared that every MMO would come out with a Battle Royale mode. Thankfully, at this point only a few have. Skyforge, Mortal Online, Wild West Online, and Ashes of Creation are the most notable. Though you also have it in games like Trove.

It was quite a year for the Battle Royale genre and this was barely a look at the surface. There were a vast amount of games we didn’t mention like Rapture Rejects and we didn’t even discuss how many divorces there were because of Fortnite. But now it is time to start looking ahead to 2019. We already know that Planetside Arena is on its way, what else will 2019 bring us? Next week we’ll look at a few predictions.

New MMORPG Announced on Christmas Day

While most of us in the Western party of the world was settling into our turkey and opening presents we missed a new MMORPG announced on Christmas Day. It’s being called Project BBQ at the moment and it was announced by Neople. It will have elements of the beloved Dungeon Fighter Online IP.

If you haven’t heard of Dungeon Fighter Online it is one of the highest grossing games of all time with more than $10 billion in revenue and more than 600 million players. It is consistently at the top of the Superdata’s PC charts in terms of worldwide revenue every month to this day. It has been live for more than 5 years at this point and is still going strong.

The new MMORPG has only been in development for a year now so it is still a ways off but on Christmas Day Nexon and Neople held a Dungeon Fighter event called Dungeon & Fighter Carnival. There they announced Project BBQ along with a Dungeon & Fighter mobile game for the South Korean audience.

Our friend over at MMO Culture has uploaded the game reveal trailer which of course looks gorgeous. They also have a few more screenshots than what we’ve included here so if this game grabs your interest be sure to check them out over there.

We don’t have any word yet on if this game will be released in the West at all, but we all have our fingers crossed hoping that they will. As we learn more about the game we will be sure to pass the news on to you.

If there was ever any doubt before it seems pretty clear now. The future of the MMORPG lies in the hands of developers in the east. Project BBQ is just one in a long line of upcoming MMORPGs currently in the works by developers in the East, mostly in South Korea.

Blizzard Customer Service Concerns as 100 Staff Members Voluntarily Leave

One hundred staff members of the Cork, Ireland branch of Blizzard customer service have voluntarily accepted money to leave their jobs. An anonymous Blizzard employee contacted Eurogamer to tell them about this deal. According to the source it has been offered to Cork staff at least five times, and the amount of money they were offering has gone up each time. One source who did take up the offer said that it amounted to a year’s pay.

In a statement to Eurogamer Blizzard said, “The employees who are choosing to leave the company later this month are taking advantage of a voluntary and longstanding program we offer in various locations around the world. This program, which has proven popular in the past, gives eligible staff the option to make the most of incentives while proactively pursuing other career opportunities. No one is required or encouraged to participate in this program, but for those who do, we work hard to make it generous.”

This is in fact already having an impact on the quality of customer service provided to European players. Blizzard English language customer service has tweeted several times over the last few weeks that callback and live chat services would be closed from 4 or 5 PM on certain days.

Some staff who have remained at the Cork office have expressed concern over the future of the office and unsure about the future. But, Blizzard reassured Eurogamer that they have no plans to close the Cork office.

This is all of course just the most recent thing to happen to Blizzard that has been somewhat questionable since Blizzcon when Diablo Immortal was announced. Heroes of the Storm esports were also very suddenly cancelled. Leaks from the main Blizzard office suggest that there has been a cultural shift at Blizzard and money is more of a focus than it ever has been before.

Battle Royale Weekly: Development Ends for Islands of Nyne

This week we’re skipping that Fortnite news everyone is talking about right now, you know…the one with the dances. We’re also skipping PUBG because this week we’re going to focus on the underdog Battle Royale titles. As you read from the title of this article the big news this week is that development ends for Islands of Nyne, but we’ve also got news about a couple of events going on this weekend if you need an escape from your family or if you just want to introduce that younger cousin of yours to the world of Battle Royale. All of that and more is in the Battle Royale Weekly.

 

Egress Tournament Incoming

Egress made a post on Steam letting people know that a tournament would be coming soon. At this point, it is more of an announcement of an announcement sort of situation. There aren’t any details about the tournament itself yet but they are expected soon. In the announcement, they also say that they will try to give rewards to all participants; there are supposed to be a set of premium weapons for participating in the tournament. The development team also said that they will announce more details on the game’s Steam news feed, so if this is something you’re interested in you should be following along there.

Development Ends for Islands of Nyne

Well, it’s time to say goodbye to Islands of Nyne. For anyone who has been following the game, this really won’t come as a massive surprise. It is a shame though. It was easily one of the more attractive Battle Royale games out there. The developers have said that there will be one more update to the game before they walk away. This update will add game credits and potentially make server changes to allow players to host their own servers. So yes, Islands of Nyne in its current form will still be available for the time being. How long that will last though…we’ll just have to wait and see. The in-game item store has been shut down and refunds for all purchases made from November 29th to today are available through Steam. The good news is that many of those who worked on developing the game have already found jobs elsewhere in the industry. For those who haven’t, we hope you land on your feet quickly.

Proxima Royale Closed Beta This Weekend

With very little warning, Proxima Royale has announced that it will be holding a closed beta this long Christmas weekend starting on December 21st and running until December 25th. Each day the servers will be on for 12 hours, 1 PM to 1 AM Pacific, 4 PM to 4 AM Eastern, and 10 PM to 10 AM for Central Europe. Sucks to be Europe. Those who are backers or previously received beta keys from giveaways will be able to participate. If you want to take part you can still buy a Founder’s Pack on their website. The lowest Founder’s Pack is $22.49 and gets you a copy of the game, access to the beta, a nifty skin for your robot and weapons, plus Sparky, a pre-order exclusive.

Realm Royale Bonus XP Event

It looks like Battle Royale games don’t want you to be bored this weekend. Realm Royale has announced via Twitter that from December 21st to the 26th you’ll be able to earn 4X Battle XP, no matter what platform you play on. They’re also activating the in-game shop where you can buy a variety of skins and cosmetic items.

The developers also warn that the alpha pack is leaving the shop on PC in mid-January. This will be your last chance to get your hands on it before it’s gone forever. Why are they doing this? Well, the game is now in Closed Beta and they’re getting ready for Open Beta, which is coming early next year.

Ring of Elysium Issues an Apology and Announces a New Gamemode

A number of Ring of Elysium players mistakenly got caught up by the game’s anti-cheat measures and had their accounts wrongfully suspended. These accounts have since been unbanned and an apology was issued on Steam. They’re also giving players who were wrongfully caught up in the incident 1,000 e-points, which should be issued within 24 hours.

Shortly after their apology, the development team announced that a new game mode would be releasing on December 22nd called From Dusk Till Dawn. This mode has a twist. Instead of an ever-shrinking zone that you would normally see in Battle Royale games, you’ll have to manage your body temperature as night brings a massive drop in the temperature. Also, unlike other Battle Royale games, the winner isn’t the last man standing and is instead anyone who manages to survive until morning, the end of the round. This game mode is considered to be in testing at the moment and as such will only be available three times a day. These three times taking into account time zones and player locations. The times each day are as follows:

  • 4:00-6:00, 12:00-14:00, 20:00-22:00 (PST)
  • 12:00-14:00, 20:00-22:00,4:00-6:00(GMT
  • 20:00-22:00, 4:00-6:00, 12:00-14:00 (GMT+8)

Stormdivers Looking For Beta Testers

Housemarque is now looking for beta testers for its upcoming Battle Royale game Stormdivers. This game was announced back in late April, and since then we haven’t really heard anything from the developers about the title with the exception of some dev diaries on Youtube. While signups for the beta are available on the official site there is no word yet when the beta will begin. Though it has been said that the beta will take place on Steam. It is certainly shaping up to be a gorgeous looking game. If you want the chance to take part in beta testing when it starts head over to the Housemarque website with your Steam info.

Star Citizen Developer Valued at Nearly Half A Billion Dollars

Star Citizen developer Cloud Imperium Games is now worth nearly half a billion dollars. This news comes after they recently raised $46 million from a private investment which brings them up to $496 million in value for the company.

The new investment comes from a father and son team Clive and Keith Calder and the company has told Variety that the money will be used to create a marketing war chest for the 2020 release of Squadron 42. The deal has given the two Calders an approximately 10% share of the company. Two new people have also been added to the board. Dan Offner, who is the Calder’s nominee, and Eli Klein, who has served as an advisor to the company.

In an interview with Variety, Chris Roberts explained that the reason they went looking for an outside investor is that he wasn’t happy using crowdfunded money for marketing Squadron 42. That left the option of going public, selling the company, or working with an outside publisher. None of these options were really what Roberts wanted so he went looking somewhere else.

So who are the two who invested another $46 million in a game that has the industry so divided? Clive Calder is a billionaire known for co-founding the Zomba Music Group, a massive name in the music industry. Meanwhile, his son Keith Calder is an indie film director who is best known for All the Boys Love Mandy Lane and The Wackness.

This investment and the announcement of the value of the company is sure to stir up conversation about the studio all across the internet once again. Opinions on  Star Citizen and Cloud Imperium Games could not be more divided and people on both sides have very strong feelings on the matter. In fact, even opinion in the MMOGames office is split.

WoW Wednesday: The Feast of Winter Veil

Snow falls and hearths are lit in the wide World of Warcraft as the holiday season once again dawns on us in the real world. Just as we get together to celebrate the season with our families, the land of Azeroth becomes more festive to herald the coming of Greatfather Winter and the kinship of the heroes of the world. This year Winter Veil comes back bigger and better than ever as a seasonal event in Battle for Azeroth. During the event running through January 2nd, players can sample (and cook) delicious holiday treats, rescue one of Greatfather Winter’s reindeer, tackle special world boss content, and even unwrap your own gifts from the jubilantly jolly geriatric!

Part of the meta-achievement What a Long, Strange Trip It’s Been, the Feast of Winter Veil has its own meta-achievement which combines gift giving, treat making and more in one comprehensive checklist for the event. Read on to figure out how to join in on the festivities and claim your own <Merrymaker> title!

All of the following achievements must be complete during the Feast of Winter Veil. While several other holiday achievements can be completed outside of their timely slots (provided you have the right items that aren’t locked to the time they’re available), most of this event’s achievements cannot.

Greatfather Winter, here to ho-ho-hold onto your presents until the big day!

‘Tis the Season simply requires you to wear 3 pieces of Winter Clothing and eat a slice of Graccus’ Mince Meat Fruitcake. Made up of five different items, the Red and Green Winter Veil sets are really only constructed of three items each. The hats will drop off of select enemies in Heroic Level dungeons and raids, noted by their festive attire.

Chest pieces will most popularly be found on Auction Houses, but they can also be made by Tailors with level 250 Classic Tailoring. The Winter Boots (which come in only one variety) can be made by Leatherworkers with 285 Classic Leatherworking skill. The fruitcake can be dug up in packages rewarded from the quests Treats for Great-Father Winter or You’re a Mean One…

A Frosty Shake simply requires you to get your hands on a Winter Veil Disguise Kit and /dance with people under its effect in Dalaran. Most players can pick up the toy from their mailbox after completing the quest chain that starts with You’re a Mean One… Time to get the whole snow-family on the floor!

Bros. Before Ho Ho Ho’s will see players traveling across Azeroth and giving a little Christmas smooch to various Brothers of the Horde and Alliance, depending on your faction. Clearly this particular achievement shows off a little of that often joked about ‘Horde-Bias’ whereas there are ten Brothers for the Alliance to deliver a holiday package to, the Horde only has 3 spread across various Horde sites in Northrend.

Aside from being a catchy holiday carol, Fa-la-la-Ogri’la is a twist on the classic Burning Crusade daily quest Bomb Them Again! Travel to the Blade’s Edge Mountains, pick up the quest and turn your deadly bomb-delivery mount into a Reindeer with some Fresh Holly or Preserved Holly. If this quest is unavailable to you, you might need to do a short questline to open them up beginning with the quest The Crystals.

Smookywood Pastures commercializes most of the season, and will ask for your help in saving the holiday.

He Knows if You’ve Been Naughty is one that simply requires a little patience, needing you to wait until December 25th. Simply log in, head over to Orgrimmar or Ironforge and open up one of your gifts beneath the Winter Veil tree! Hopefully you’ve been good and don’t end up with a lump of coal. Each year’s special toy has a special Feat of Strength achievement associated with it as well, and many toys can still be collected through alternative means throughout the season. There are also a smattering of other achievements not included in Merrymaker that require these toys, mostly to terrorize other players and be a general Greench! These include Iron Armada, A-Caroling We Will Go, BB King and more.

Let It Snow requires you to use a Handful of Snowflakes on a set list of race-class combinations. Throughout the season there are often charitable players of the opposing faction waiting in neutral major cities to help you out, but you can also pay some punishment on your foes in a battleground or two. If you find yourself short on a Handful of Snowflakes, simply give one of the many Winter Revelers a little /kiss.

On Metzen! is awarded for saving the titular reindeer during the quest You’re a Mean One…, a daily quest requiring you to slay a true Greench and save Winter Veil!

Scrooge is for those who aren’t fans of Winter Veil by smashing snowballs into the faces of some of the biggest revelers in the Horde and Alliance. While Alliance players have the task of sneaking into Thunder Bluff to peg Baine Bloodhoof, Horde players must sneak into the heart of Ironforge itself and pelt Muradin Bronzebeard.

Simply Abominable is another achievement connected to the questline which begins with You’re a Mean One… Slay the Abominable Greench, rescue Metzen and save the stolen treats of Azeroth!

The Winter Veil Gourmet requires you to collect and cook several holiday themed recipes including a Gingerbread Cookie, Winter Veil Egg Nog and Hot Apple Cider. While all of the recipes can be purchased from the Smokywood Pastures vendors in major cities, the Hot Apple Cider recipe requires 300 skill in Classic Cooking, making it a difficult feat for those who’ve not taken the time to maximize their secondary professions.

With a Little Helper From My Friends is the last of the achievements, and can easily be completed in a few Epic Battlegrounds. Stepping into one of the many Winter Wondervolt machines throughout Azeroth, you’ll transform into one of Greatfather Winter’s little helpers! From there you must make 50 cumulative Honorable Kills in Battlegrounds, meaning that if you die and lose the buff you can simply return and visit the machine between matches!

Daybreak Offering Lifetime Subscription for MMOs

How do you make 1.2 million dollars in a hurry? Well, if you’re Daybreak offering lifetime subscription to your MMO catalog is the way to go. This is exactly what they’re doing with a limited availability lifetime all access membership. For $299.99 (henceforth renamed $300 because ain’t nobody got time for that.) players will have lifetime membership benefits in every All Access game. For those who don’t know which ones that includes, we’re talking about Everquest, Everquest II, DCUO, and Planetside 2. Only 4,000 of these lifetime subscriptions will be made available and for anyone wondering, that’s where the $1.2 million comes from ($300 times 4,000 equals $1.2 million). This offer is only available until December 31st, assuming supplies last that long. Which of course Daybreak is warning that they will likely sell out.

If the $300 price tag is a little bit too steep for you at the moment but you do happen to have $200 laying around then maybe you’ll consider getting a 12-month subscription instead. All the same perks, but a hundred dollars less and only for one year. Yeah, we’d go with the lifetime sub if it were us.

The recently announced Planetside Arena is most notably not included as part of this lifetime deal, neither is H1Z1. This is likely because they still have a lot more life in them than the other titles. That’s not to say that we think any of them will be closing in the near future, just that they are Daybreak’s older games which naturally puts them closer to the end of their lifecycle.

You may recall that recently Daybreak had layoffs, then very shortly afterward announced Planetside Arena. There were also rumors earlier this year that Everquest and Everquest II were going to be coming to an end very soon. All of this, of course, has made a lot of people very worried about the future of Daybreak Games. If there are in fact problems this might just be enough to save them for the time being.

MMO Money: Arena of Valor Finds Success At Last

Here we are at the second to the last Tuesday of the year, which means this is our last look at the news from the business side of the games industry. Next week we’ll have an article that looks back at the biggest stories of the year so keep an eye out for that. For now, though we have Blizzard to discuss along with the Zenimax vs Oculus lawsuit, esports, and Arena of Valor’s success on the Nintendo Switch.

Blizzard Kills Heroes of the Storm Esports

There have been a lot of unpopular things going on with Blizzard recently that are leaving lifelong fans wondering what has happened to the beloved brand. Most recently Blizzard took a chainsaw to Heroes of the Storm. They put an end to the competitive esports scene saying that the Heroes Global Championship and Heroes of the Dorm won’t be returning in 2019. This very sudden change has put a lot of people out of jobs. Stars who left college to pursue esports, team managers wondering what to do next, and many others from all aspects of the esports scene.

At the same time, Blizzard says that they will continue developing the game, though the cadence of releases will change. In other words, they will be releasing content less often. Blizzard also moved some developers, though they didn’t say how many, from the Heroes of the Storm development team to other teams. While they aren’t giving up on Heroes of the Storm completely it certainly sounds like this is the beginning of the end for the game, which would be just another unpopular move on Blizzard’s part. That really breaks all of this to one final question….is Blizzard working on a Battle Royale game? Only time will tell, but based on the decisions they’ve been making recently it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch.

Arena of Valor Downloaded 1 Million Times on Switch

In China, Tencent has seen massive success with Honour of Kings. It’s been at the top of the mobile charts every month in terms of revenue for the entire year. However, when they released it as Arena of Valor in the West it wasn’t a massive success at all. At least that is until it was released on the Nintendo Switch. Since Arena of Valor launched on the Switch at the end of September it has been downloaded 1 million times and the United States was the biggest market. While Arena of Valor hasn’t been performing as well in the West as it has in China it hasn’t all been bad news for the game. In September the MOBA reached the $15 million milestone in player spending between the App Store and Google Play. At that time the game also experienced 49% growth month over month in comparison to August. So even almost a year after launching it was still growing in a big way.

Arena of Valor is Tencent’s first console game, but with results like this, it almost certainly won’t be the last. This is especially true as the company has to try to claw back from the really quite awful year they’ve had.

Intel and ESL Announce $100m Esports Investment

Blizzard might be taking a step back from the Heroes of the Storm esports scene but in other corners of the esports world, things are looking good. Intel and ESL have announced that they will be continuing their partnership to 2021 and more than $100 million in investments in the industry will be made. The partnership between the two companies is 18 years old, making it the longest standing partnership in all of esports. The deal will help to drive growth in new regions which includes a focus on hosting and large-scale events within some Asia-Pacific countries.

“ESL and Intel have worked side by side on growing esports for nearly two decades,” said Ralf Reichert, ESL founder and co-CEO. “We built a number of cornerstones of this industry together and helped many gamers in becoming legends of the sport. The long-term extended partnership with Intel opens even more opportunities for us to take our efforts to a whole different level on a global scale.”

The Vice President and General Manager of VR, Gaming, and Esports at Intel had this to say, “This joint investment with ESL into the ecosystem means that the esports growth and innovation that we’ve led over the past two decades will continue. This partnership will advance the rapid evolution of esports, and Intel is committed to ushering in this new era with technology solutions that place the gaming community and fans first.”

Zenimax and Oculus Settle Their VR Lawsuit

It might feel like Zenimax and Oculus have been involved in a lawsuit over the Oculus VR system forever. It all started in 2014, which certainly feels like an eternity ago. In 2017, Zenimax was awarded $500 million by a judge, but that was later cut in half upon appeal. That then led to even more appeals, though those have now been dropped. The two companies reached a settlement outside of court through the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals mediation program. The terms of the settlement weren’t disclosed and they likely never will be.

Both sides seem to be quite pleased with the outcome, and Zenimax Chairman and CEO Robert Altman said, “We are pleased that a settlement has been reached and are fully satisfied by the outcome. While we dislike litigation, we will always vigorously defend against any infringement or misappropriation of our intellectual property by third parties.”

A representative for Facebook, who own Oculus said, “We’re pleased to put this behind us and continue building the future of VR.”

It’s nice to see this story finally put to rest.
