Social Roleplaying MMORPG Book of Travels Beta Announced

The Book of Travels beta was announced by its developers Might and Delight, the makers of the Shelter series. You’d be forgiven if you haven’t heard of Book of Travels before. It’s what the developers call a tiny MMORPG and a unique social roleplaying experience. The game had a successful Kickstarter campaign late last year.

If you haven’t heard about the game before here’s a little blurb from Book of Travels’ official site: Venture out into a living, breathing fairytale world. Craft a character with its own unique personality and explore the open land however you choose. Set your own goals and shape your adventure alone or with the others you find in this serene online TMORPG (tiny multiplayer online).

In the announcement today on Steam the studio laid out their plans for beta and early access. The beta will be open to those who pledged to the Kickstarter and it is due to take place in May and June. At the moment they’re eyeing October for Early Access, but this could change as the year progresses.

Some Preliminary Thoughts on Temtem

It is a gorgeous day in Zadar, on this brightly colored floating island. Today is your Apprentice’s Eve, and it’s the first day you’re getting to choose a little companion creature, called a Temtem. Luckily, here on this island, your professor friend has brought along a trio of creatures, from which you will pick your first. Then, quickly, your adventure gets temporarily stalled as you are challenged by your childhood rival to a Temtem battle. Then, set off on your adventure, you will visit various dojos, challenge their leaders, and continue to develop your skills as a Temtem tamer.

If this setup sounds familiar, it’s because it inevitably is. At first blush, and even during prolonged play, it can be difficult to see Temtem as anything other than exactly what it is, an MMORPG not at all dissimilar from Game Freak’s massively popular Pokemon franchise.


It’s not exactly Pokémon…

The impulse to dwell only on what separates Temtem from Pokémon is immediate. In brief, some of the major differences are some of Temtem’s noteworthy strengths. Without the specter of a long list of known creatures, skills, types, and setups means that the competitive elements of Temtem are not going to be immediately drowning in optimized creatures and movelists. It gives both new and practiced high-level Pokémon players a relatively level playing field.

Similarly, seasoned Pokémon players will find moves, move energy, and type systems don’t work exactly the same, and will need to do a bit of work exploring the new types, moves, and timings to get the full swing of combat. Nothing too jarring, but enough wrinkles to change up the pace and style of play from time to time.

Also, in combat, the player will always deploy two creatures, even against individual opponents. It means players will have the opportunity to stage their teams so they can apply status effects and attacks on the same turn they try to capture a creature. Though it’s a little detail, having each creature act as its own independent turn in combat also means item usage, rest turns, and status effects are done in concert with other player actions. A bit of topspin on turn-by-turn strategizing.

Despite those differences, players looking to have somewhat familiar experience without having to learn brand new mechanics and systems will find Temtem to be a very easy thing to settle into. So, those familiar with Pokémon will have little trouble acclimating quickly, and lancing themselves into the world immediately.


It Shouldn’t Be!

Although the setup, structure, and trappings may seem inextricably similar to Pokémon, one of the most exciting parts of Temtem is getting to be excited about the ways in which it isn’t like it’s nearest comparison. For all the things the Nintendo titan is, it also exists in volumes already. Temtem can’t be exactly that, nor should it!

Temtem is another game world, with an entirely different population, one which is filled primarily with other players. Players who can be whatever sort of player and tamer they want to be. Although Temtem has a narrative mode, it will also be a world overflowing with players of every stripe, strategies of every sort, and opportunities to socialize and coordinate that promises to be very unique in the creature capture genre.


Unburdened by Grandeur

Games too often have a world-saving gravitas. The idea of averting the apocalypse, saving the princess, or defeating the grand evil is a long shadow that seems to hang oppressively over many online narratives. Players can sit in the town square, contemplating the choices that hang heavy over their heads as the sole saviors of the universe, surrounded by hundreds of other sole saviors of the universe. Massively multiplayer online games, as a whole, are kind of silly in that way.

Temtem is free of that gravity. In fact, the entire world seems to be powered by bright colors and charming locals. The tropical village of Zandar is a paradise of tourist pleasure, a place to kick up one’s feet, watch the waves lap over the sand, and enjoy the passing breeze. A game with competitive stakes, but one that doesn’t feel the need to linger darkly on them.

You are young, you are free, you are not bound by social needs, you have all your best creature friends with you. Go find your adventure!


Over the Horizon

There’s a lot more to Temtem still over the horizon, and it will be a pleasure to continue to explore what new details come about as the game grows. There’s plenty of opportunity for Temtem to be a hit on its own rights.

For now, a few creatures, some beachfront skirmishes, and a new adventure on the horizon are enough.

Coronavirus Forces the Cancelation of Overwatch League Matches

The Coronavirus forces the cancelation of Overwatch League matches in China as fear about the illness spreads. The matches were set to take place in February and March but will now be put off to later this year. This was meant to be the first season in league history where each of the 20 teams hosted matches in their home cities and four of those were set to take place in China. Each location; Shanghai, Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Guangzhou were expected to host 2 events. The first of these events were meant to start on February 15th, just a little over two weeks from now.

Blizzard took to Twitter to announce the cancelation of the events, saying:

“We have decided to cancel our February and March matches in China in order to protect the health and safety of our players, fans, and staff. We hope fans have a safe and happy Lunar New Year, and we remain incredibly excited to play Overwatch League matches in China later this season. We’ll share more information about when and where the matches will take place at a later date. Thank you for your support and understanding!”

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the Coronavirus have an impact on the entertainment industry. In fact, with movie theaters closed in China over what is their biggest movie-watching weekend, it is likely that the global film industry will feel the effects of this for some time to come. Major Chinese blockbusters that were meant to release for the Lunar New Year will have to be rescheduled and this will likely impact Western-made movies like Dolittle.

It is also having a major impact on tourism as a number of airlines around the world have announced they will stop flying in and out of China for the time being. Many Western countries are also organizing having their citizens who are in the Wuhan area brought home. However, when Japan did this they found that they ended up bringing back with them a number of people who were ill. Which could just further spread the illness.

The latest estimates as of writing this have the total number of confirmed cases of Coronavirus at 7,817 globally. 5 of those are in the United States, 3 in Canada, while China has 7,711 cases. Cases have also been confirmed in Australia, Germany, France, Finland, and the UAE just to name a few. Even Ireland, which has no direct flights to Wuhan where the Coronavirus started has a handful of people in self-imposed quarantine.

As this illness continues to spread across the globe it is likely we will see more events like the Overwatch League canceled.

Phantasy Star Online 2 Beta Details Released

You’ve been waiting years to hear these words so be sure to read them out loud, the Phantasy Star Online 2 beta details have been announced. The beta will be running for only one weekend from February 7th at 8 PM Eastern to February 9th at 3 AM Eastern. It will only be available for North American Xbox Ones.

During the beta, players will for the first time get to experience a fully localized Phantasy Star Online 2 in English. Participants will retain their progress and those who take part in “Urgent Quests” will have the chance to get in-game rewards when the game launches.

Phoenix Labs and Dauntless Purchased by Garena

It was recently announced that Dauntless developer Phoenix Labs has been acquired by Garena, which is the digital entertainment extension of Sea Limited.

Dauntless is a free-to-play, co-op action RPG in the same vein of Monster Hunter. Early in development, Dauntless received significant hype due to being one of the first multiplayer-focused, ‘Monster Hunter’ style games of the current generation. While Monster Hunter: World did temper this hype slightly, Dauntless has still been successful on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch and it is one of the few games to feature crossplay between every system.

WoW Wednesday: Warcraft 3 and the Consequences of Blizzposting

Remastered games are a touchy aspect of the video gaming industry, especially when it comes to ‘classics’. We all know the type; those games from the 70s through the 90s that defined a lot of modern gaming conventions and flavor. The Crash Bandicoots, the Goldeneyes, those ones that took drastic curves and changes to, or reinvented old¸ formulas that up until that point had been bedrock concepts. As such, its hard to look at remastered titles without some form of controversy.

There are a myriad collection of opinions, of course. Some take umbrage with creative choices in revitalizing older games. Others fear for the ‘integrity’ of their game; when you change and update everything, including voice lines of old, you lose a major part of what made that great to begin with. Take, for example, the Spyro: Reignited Trilogy. This is, in my opinion, one of the best remastered classics to date. Spyro the Dragon and Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon are pulled off to an absolutely beautiful degree. I did, however, heavily dislike the remastered Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage (or Return to Glimmer for the Europeans). I felt, and still do feel, that a lot of the nuances and characterizations in the voice acting (and there is a LOT for every world) were lost in the translation to the up-rezzed graphics and tighter controls. It tars what is otherwise one of my top five favorite games of all time.

Then the controversy grows and transforms when, as a studio, you are already one rife with controversy. That came full force in the face of Activision-Blizzard and Blizzard Entertainment when they announced Warcraft 3: Reforged. The concept, at its presentation during Blizzcon 2018, was simple. Taking advice from Korean Pro-Players during their recreation of Starcraft: Remastered, a visual update was a fundamental necessity, without changing the game entirely too much.

But that wasn’t what Blizzard decided to do.

Instead, with the game already quite some time into development, they announced they would ‘Reforge’ the Warcraft 3 experience. In addressing this Blizzard is of course infamous for only debuting games when they are in a polished state; far along enough in development that artwork is mostly complete and the final stages of level development are occurring. Diablo 4 is a fine example of this ‘Blizzardposting’ phenomenon of being an open and well-developed secret for years but having its existence outright denied to the discredit of news reporters and analysts up until its announcement. Then suddenly, and with great furor, so much information is released at once that it’s nearly deafening to take it all in.

As such it is quite safe to say that an extensive amount of work was already done for Warcraft 3: Reforged. There was, however, a very small problem. Rather, two of them.

Over 15 years the lore of the Warcraft universe has gotten extensive. This is both good and bad; more lore means there are more possibilities to play with when making content. More stories to tell, more worlds to explore, etcetera. But more lore means more things to manage. When you build an expansive world on rather linear foundations you can quickly run out of room to explore. Characters have changed over fifteen years and evolved. There is, in many ways, a need to rebuild and recreate the stories of these characters to better reflect their motivations and status. Blizzard Entertainment have done these “soft retcons” for years, most recently in the Chronicle series of books (and then later another post retconning them into being written from the ‘perspective of the Titans).

Warcraft III: Reforged
Then we return to the problem of Warcraft 3 being a classic game in every sense of the word. This was the RTS that built the foundations for the modern Warcraft universe and fandom. Many people’s first memories of Warcraft are playing this game. To say that several pieces of dialogue, cutscenes, and levels are truly iconic is an understatement; to this day the words of Arthas as he murders his father ring as powerful to me as Darth Vader’s famous, “No, I am your father!” The audio of the entire scene is one of, if not the, most fundamental moments of the universe’s lore.

So Blizzard announces Warcraft 3: Reforged to an audience who go excited. Then they announce that they will be reworking famous scenes and pushing previously underwritten characters like Sylvanas Windrunner into the spotlight. This will, on the large, require total re-recordings of most if not all characters in order for the audio quality to match. Christie Golden, a largely celebrated author and member of the Narrative Team, is set to head the rewrites. However, after mixed opinions on her Battle for Azeroth tie in novel, “Before the Storm,” some concerns are quietly mentioned by the community.

In large this created a rift between the ideal ‘Blizzposting,’ announcing and debuting a mostly together product, and the community. While there was disquiet, eventually this grew into a fever pitch post-Blizzcon 2018. Simultaneously, the World of Warcraft team and Blizzard Entertainment on the whole faced an incredible amount of backlash over the poor systems and release of Battle for Azeroth. In response to growing community outcry, Blizzard announced they would drop all the narrative changes in Warcraft 3: Reforged.

This turns over a host of problems. A very large host.

Suddenly the game has to be changed in several areas. Every piece of work built around Golden’s updated ‘soft-recton’ narrative now has to be scrapped and remade. While no deadline was announced, the pre-orders found in the launcher promised a ‘December 2019’ release window. The entire game now has to be reset onto the ‘original’ Warcraft 3 path. This includes gameplay, audio recording, programming, and, the most time-consuming part of all, the cutscenes. It is at this point, inevitably, where corners begin to get cut.

Thankfully, a ‘return’ to the original narrative means that older cutscenes can be reused. Frankly, the up-rezzed HD remaster of Arthas returning to Capital City is absolutely phenomenal, as is every other original cutscene. Each of these ‘cinematic cutscenes’ has stood the test of time remarkably well.

However there are several ones, based on in-game rendered models, that do not. The infamous fight between Illidain and Arthas at Icecrown is a fantastic cutscene from the original Warcraft 3. It is one I recommend to every potential cinematographer to watch as an example on how to do quite a bit with very low-quality resources. The fight in Warcraft 3: Reforged, however, is lacking in almost every aspect. From stiff, clunky model movements to a distinct lake of lighting and shadows (something that often plagues several parts of the game), to just strange cinematography. While longer than its predecessor, its clear this cinematic was in large part attached to the Golden narrative. Coupled with its missing music this relic feels unfinished.

A sentiment echoed by day one players of Warcraft 3: Reforged. Despite a largely untroubled and smooth closed beta, as well as a well-documented multiplayer beta, bugs have numbered in the dozens with Day 1. The list includes save-erasing bugs, large-scale crashes, portions of the campaign simply missing from the game, maps not loading, unit models not functioning, enemy AI clipping through terrain. There is, frankly, far too much to cover in just this article. The individual cases begin to blend together with other typical bugs expected of a Day 1 launch (which tend to be largely graphical).

Warcraft III: Reforged
The problem, however, arises with the general feelings of frustration with Activision-Blizzard in general. After it was announced that the Reforged portion of this remaster was being dropped players became disenfranchised with the game in totality. This was driven on the backs of multiple problems through the lifecycle of Battle for Azeroth and distaste about the impromptu closing of the Heroes of the Storm E-Sports support, not to mention the terrible announcement of Diablo: Immortal. Issues only grew with the public outcry of several internal Blizzard employees and accusations of mistreatment. Then the mass layoffs of PR staff in Ireland and Europe tainted further perception of the company. Now, with feelings of resentment about the finale of Patch 8.3, public opinion is at an all-time low. All of this compiled together to create an interesting conundrum in the community.

This creates two fundamental and diametrically opposed phenomenon with Reforged’s instance of ‘Blizzposting’.

The first is one we all know well; The Hype Train. Warcraft 3: Remastered is, was, and shall be a fantastic idea. There is no reason why this in its totality cannot work. Every single aspect of this problem is in and of itself a fantastic concept.

Then we come to all of the negative. The problem with Classic games is they are, in some aspect, emotionally untouchable. Things can be added, developed, and explored to create new additional content. But changing anything, even minutely, can have violent and vile reactions. Added to that the incredible amount of ill-will generated by issues related to its MMORPG counterpart, and Warcraft 3 needed absolute emotional perfection in order to achieve greatness.

Such is the problem with ‘Blizzposting’. With Triple-A products there is no time for large-scale delays or developments, not when performance has failed. Battle for Azeroth, as admitted by its team, is a failure for Blizzard Entertainment. Nothing new, commercially speaking, was released by the company throughout 2019. Warcraft 3: Reforged could not be delayed, not with the next game release potentially being World of Warcraft: Shadowlands in late 2020. But there is no way, two years out, that the Reforged team could have anticipated anything that happened. Late into their development cycle, and with a deadline already in mind, they had no idea that all of this would snowball into an effect that would tarnish opinions of the game’s creative direction. Thus, attempting to cater to mitigate, the work-cycle suddenly and irrevocably suffered. Without a success to work from, Reforged could not be delayed for polish. But such is the problem with ‘Blizzposting’.

I am, by no means, saying that Warcraft 3: Reforged is a bad game. It is, in my opinion, a game that is built on the legacy of a great one. However, it has, and will yet inevitably, suffer in some part due to the whims of ‘polish.’ By restricting it down to an announcement so late in its development cycle, and having to make unforeseen changes with an unknowable locked in shipping date, the game was never going to be as good as it could be. Sadly, Medivh could not be the Guardian of Reforged, but perhaps as the days trundle on, more work will be done. Its fate, after all, may lie across the sea…

How Amazon Can Foster PvE in New World

Amazon’s New World is one of the more promising new MMOs to be announced in recent years, but from the start it’s been bogged down by worries it will have nothing to offer the PvE player. Initially, it sounded like a pure PvP game; now they seem to be spending more time hyping its PvE aspects, but we still don’t have a clear picture of how the balance will work out in practice. Let’s look at some of the things Amazon could do to foster PvE in New World.

A party of characters ready to pursue PvE in New World.We know the PvP will be optional, seemingly with some kind of a toggle system that will allow players to opt out. That’s a great start, but we don’t really know how viable PvE play will be. If all of the best rewards are only available through PvP then PvE players will be left begging for scraps and probably lose interest quickly.

If Amazon really wants to foster PvE in New World, they need to make meaningful progression for PvE players. It doesn’t need to be perfect parity with PvP in all areas, but there should be options for the monster-slayers among us to have rewards that feel satisfying and attainable.

Something that particularly concerns me right now is housing. Housing seems to be tied to PvP territorial wars, and I think I speak for a lot of PvE players when I say I don’t want the existence or affordability of my in-game home to be beholden to warring factions. I’d accept a smaller or limited home if it meant I could also have safety and stability, regardless of what guild is presently ascendant.

Something else that’s important for PvE in New World to flourish is for the PvE content to actually be fun and engaging. It can’t just can be picking flowers and mindlessly mowing down trash mobs.

PvE could be a great way to flesh out the intriguing lore of the setting of Aeternum. Being more of a sandbox title, I don’t expect New World to be flush with story quests, but there’s still room for occasional narrative adventures, or perhaps environmental puzzles to uncover snippets of lore about the previous failed colonization attempts of Aeternum.

World bosses could also be a great option for PvE in New World. It doesn’t seem like a game where an emphasis on instanced dungeons and raids would make much sense, but open world boss fights similar to those of Guild Wars 2 would be an excellent option to give PvE players an interesting endgame beyond simply farming.

Something like this has already been announced in the form of world events called Corrupted Breaches, in which players face hordes of monsters warped by the magic of Aeternum, so it seems Amazon may be on the right track.

It’s still too early to say with certainty how well PvE in New World will be handled, but the fact that Amazon has already done such a good job of listening to feedback and providing options for PvE players as well as more competitive types is, in this writer’s opinion, a very positive sign, and as a PvE player myself, I feel a cautious but growing optimism toward the game.

Pokemon Go Battle League Begins Rolling Out

We’ve mentioned it before but now the Pokemon Go Battle League is finally here! It is being rolled out slowly based on Trainer level in order to ensure stability as the new system stretches its legs. It’s all starting with a preseason that will act a bit like a beta. During this time playing won’t be competitive but you will be helping to balance and optimize the Go Battle League. It will also give Niantic the opportunity to learn how the league is being used. This will help them determine the length of seasons, thresholds for ranks, and more.

The preseason will begin in the Great League then go to Ultra and finally the Master League. Leagues will rotate every two weeks. You will also be able to rank during the preseason, however, once Season 1 begins your rank will be partially reset. You will also still earn rewards. As you battle you’ll earn a large amount of stardust. How much is determined by your rank and how many of the five battles you win. You’ll also be able to earn important battle-related items like rare candy and TMs along with exclusive Pokemon Encounters. That includes Pikachu Libre. There will also be Pikachu Libre themed avatar items that you’ll be able to unlock.

Premium Raid Passes are turning into Premium Battle Passes. This will allow players to enter the premium track in Go Battle League. The premium track is even more rewarding than the normal track. Though it won’t help you increase your rank or rating any faster.

But, before you can do any battling you’re going to have to walk 5 kilometers to unlock a set of 5 online matches. Or if you’ve walked 2km you can instead purchase your way to battling with Pokecoins.

Torchlight Frontiers Has Become Torchlight III

Today it was announced by Perfect World that Torchlight Frontiers has become Torchlight III. The game will be launching on Steam this summer and alpha testing for it begins on January 29th.

“When we started developing Torchlight Frontiers, we were focused on creating a shared-world experience,” said Max Schaefer, CEO of Echtra Games and co-founder of the Torchlight franchise. “During development, you often discover what type of product a game was meant to be and we found Torchlight Frontiers was meant to be a true successor to Torchlight I & II. Based on this and extensive feedback from our Alpha testers, we decided it was time to take the game back to its roots and model it after the classic Torchlight games that ARPG fans have come to love. We’d like to thank our dedicated player base for supporting us and providing such insightful feedback during early development.”


The game had previously been announced as a free to play title but it will be going to the premium model that Torchlight and Torchlight II had before it. In fact, this isn’t the only way in which they’re going back to the familiar way of doing things that they’ve already established. Rather than focusing on horizontal progression, the game has gone back to the familiar linear structure that Torchlight fans know and love.

They have also announced that Torchlight III will have a brand new class, though they aren’t ready to reveal what it is quite yet. There will be more information on it as the launch date approaches.

It’s always exciting when a studio listens to the feedback from their players and this is no exception. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for Torchlight III.

Temtem Type Chart and Guide – Advantages and Weaknesses

Traversing through Temtem is like riding a bicycle for anyone that has ever played a Pokemon game in their lives. However, those who are used to the type standards set by the Pocket Monsters may get a tad confused when entering the world of Temtem.

Honestly, it all works very similarly to the rock-paper-scissors format that Pokemon popularized over the past two decades, with some definite changes to the status quo. Temtems each have a “type” of element attached to them, such as the starter option Crystle being a Crystal type. They can be broken down into twelve possible options, as well as some being dual-types.

Where to Start – What Are All The Types?

Those types are: Fire, Water, Nature, Electric, Crystal, Melee, Mental, Earth, Wind, Digital, Toxic, and Neutral. Each one makes sense in terms of context, but they can be exploited for advantages in battle. Water, for instance, is strong against Fire types, and so on.

For those that are fans of Pokemon, this is how we get “super effective” moves. In fact, the game will offer a double damage, or “2x” in times of superior typing. This can go as far as to offer a “4x” when it’s doubly effective on a dual-type. When attacking something resistant, it will only give ½ damage, and when doubly resistant, it’ll give a ¼ damage. Eventually, you’ll find yourself hovering over a Temtem opponent and seeing the circle turn green or red, which indicate if something is going to hit more effectively, or incredibly weakly.

Very early in the game, you and your rival/ “friend” Max are brought to the Professor’s lab to start your journey as a Temtem Tamer. There, you’re faced with three “starter” Temtem. This isn’t your usual Fire, Water, and Grass options either.

You’re faced with the Crystal type Crystle, the Melee type Smazee, and the Mental type Houchic. These work in a circle similar to the old Pokemon starters, with Crytle being good over Houchic, Houschic having the advantage over Smazee, and Smazee able to best Crystle. You’ll also likely lose your first battle against Max, who rocks a Digital type that has no disadvantages here as all. Don’t feel bad when you lose.


Fire Type

Fire is exactly as it sounds. It’s a Temtem that utilizes Fire-based attacks and is likely fire-themed. Don’t get burned!

Strength: Nature, Crystal

Weakness: Water, Earth, Fire

Pokemon Equivalent: Fire-types like Charizard.


Water Type

Water-themed Temtem are usually found near bodies of water. Their moves make a bit of a splash.

Strength: Fire, Earth, Digital

Weakness: Nature, Toxic, Water

Pokemon Equivalent: Water-types like Blastoise.


Nature Type

Anything green is under this typing. It doesn’t matter if it’s the trees, plants, or the bugs that live in them.

Strength: Water, Earth

Weakness: Fire, Toxic, Nature

Pokemon Equivalent: Grass- and Bug-types, such as Butterfree or Bulbasaur


Electric Type

With a zap and a spark, Electric Temtems are really strong against a ton of other types, but they’re also super weak to a bunch of types as well.

Strength: Water, Wind, Mental, Digital

Weakness: Nature, Earth, Crystal, Electric

Pokemon Equivalent: Electric-types like Pikachu


Crystal Type

Some Temtem out there crystallize and form hard shells. These Crystal types, such as the starter Temtem Crystle, offer different abilities than the average everyday Nature type.

Strength: Electric, Mental

Weakness: Fire, Earth

Pokemon Equivalent: Closest approximation would be the Ice-type, such as Regice or Glaceon, but is likely to be a stand-in for Dark or Steel as well.


Melee Type

Head to head, Melee types are strong. They focus on strong attacks. The starter Smazee falls under this heading.

Strength: Earth, Crystal

Weakness: Mental

Pokemon Equivalent: Fighting-types like Hitmonchan or Pancham


Mental Type

Why use physical force when you can use your mind to take your opponents down? Mind over matter, as they always say, and the starter Houchic embodies that.

Strength: Neutral, Melee

Weakness: Crystal

Pokemon Equivalent: Psychic-type, such as Abra or Mewtwo

Earth Type

In terms of both Temtem that live in caves or just underground, the Earth-type is rockin’ and rollin’.

Strength: Fire, Electric, Crystal

Weakness: Water, Nature, Wind

Pokemon Equivalent: Rock- or Ground-type, such as Rhydon or Diglett


Wind Type

Take to the skies with these birds and floating type Temtem. Early in the game, you’re given a Tuwai by the Professor, which resembles a toucan. Then, toucan can do the double battles. Sorry, I’ll see myself out.)

Strength: Toxic

Weakness: Electric, Wind

Pokemon Equivalent: Flying-type, such as Pigeot or Pidove


Digital Type

Digital Temtem are newly discovered in the lore of the world, making them incredibly rare and incredibly powerful.

Strength: Mental, Melee, Digital

Weakness: NONE

Pokemon Equivalent: Digimon. No, seriously, there’s nothing in Pokemon like this, but Digimon is the closest approximation here. They’re digital-based, so Porygon technically. Except Porygon is “Normal-type” in Pokemon.


Toxic Type

Toxic Temtems sometimes have the ability to poison other Temtem in battle. They ooze toxicity and probably should not be cuddled too close.

Strength: Water, Nature

Weakness: Earth, Digital, Crystal, Toxic

Pokemon Equivalent: Poison-type, such as Koffing or Grimer


Neutral Type

This is as basic as basic gets. Normal type Temtems and techniques generally will hit but don’t have any advantages over anything. They’re a True Neutral.

Strength: None

Weakness: Mental

Pokemon Equivalent: Normal-type, such as Eevee or Rattata


Additional Thoughts and Best Types

Based on the original type charts available during Temtem’s Kickstarter, minor changes to type advantages have happened even in a short amount of time. The game itself doesn’t tell you in the listing of type advantages that sometimes when attacking a Temtem of the same type will be considered a type disadvantage altogether, but that isn’t always true.

You got a new Temtem, Houchic!

Since the game is in Early Access currently, the ongoing meta of the game is likely to change and, well, evolve over time. At the time of writing, digital is by far the strongest type, with no weaknesses and three strengths. It’s also the rarest of all Temtem and you won’t get one early in the game.

The important aspect, just like Pokemon before it, is to create a well-rounded team here. Try not to fill your team with all Wind-types, for instance, and vary what goes into your team of six. You have a lot of options in the wild and tall grass. Take advantage of that. Also, don’t forget to use your Tempedia to figure out what the type is of each Temtem you encounter and catch.
