Mask-wearing kung fu beat-em-up Absolver has been a bit quiet on the major update front, but that’s only because they’ve been busy. Finally, though, the fruit of that labor has a release date as Absolver: Downfall will bring its new PvE instance, PvP content and fighting style in a couple of weeks.
Downfall will feature a new co-operative or solo PvE instance known as the Adalian Mines, where players will have to chase down Arcell and his corrupted Prospects. The instance promises new challenges and three boss fights, and will reward players who defeat foes in the mines with a substance known as Gleam, which can be transformed into XP or equipment.
The new update also brings the Jeet Kun Do-like Faejin combat style. Described as one of the more technical combat styles in Absolver, Faejin will require players to flow easily between offensive strikes and defensive abilities that adjust with your stance. Or, to put it another way, “be like water.”
Finally, PvP players get something in the form of School Challenges, which brings a reworked School Leaderboard, seasons and a number of new rewards to PvP.
Absolver: Downfall will be a free update coming to PS4 and PC versions of the game on Tuesday, September 25th.
We’re curious to know if one instance, one new combat form and a few tweaks to PvP will be enough for most to continue playing Absolver. That said, the game was also a free PS Plus member game last month, so perhaps the population is a bit more resurgent and enthused? In either case, we’d love to know your thoughts on this update.
Consider this a bit of a PSA regarding the multiplayer kung fu fighting MMO-like Absolver. This weekend on Steam, PC players can hop into an Absolver free weekend as well as enjoy a 50% discount for the game if they like what they’re playing.
From Friday, August 3rd until Monday, August 6th at 10am PST/1pm EST, Absolver is absolutely free all weekend. The announcement doesn’t mention any restrictions on the free play, which means the whole Absolver experience will be open. And if you happen to be moved to continue playing after the weekend is wrapped up, the game will also be 50% off on Steam until Friday, August 10th at 10am PST/1pm PST.
The announcement of the free weekend also heralded the game’s number of free updates, 4 million owners worldwide, and the arrival of a major update this September. This new content expansion, called Downfall, will add a dungeon-like encounter for solo or multiplayer in the mines of Adal; a new combat style modeled after Bruce Lee’s famous Jeet Kune Do; a new seasonal School Challenges PvP feature; and the expected new kit to collect.
It looks like Absolver has grown something of a cult following, but the folks at Sloclap are likely going to want to see that following grow. It will be interesting to see how things in this game have progressed since its release last year, and now certainly is the perfect time to do just that.
The Absolver 1.08 update is now live and, as one would expect with the game’s design, it has some new masks to show off for Halloween. It also has a variety of other updates beyond that too, like a new end game leveling system, new items, and more.
Halloween arrives to the plains of Adal in the form of Halloween-style masks that can be earned off of Marked Ones. The game’s Combat Trial maps are also feeling the seasonal spirit as each location will now take place under cover of night.
If you’re otherwise not feeling the Halloween spirit, the update also has four new equipment sets, three new cloaks, and new Rift Coins and Rift Disks that contain items of various rarity levels. A new Prestige Level system has also been introduced, granting level 60 players a Crystal with every level earned that can be used to buy Rift Disks or reassign Attribute Points.
Patch notes for the new update can be read on the official site and a trailer for the update can be seen below.
While the Halloween-related content is pretty meager compared to many other MMO and multiplayer games, the greater bulk of this new update has some likely welcome new additions such as the end game progression system and inventory management features. Does this update entice you to buy in or fire Absolver back up, or do you think more needs to be done?
With Absolver now fully launched and players wandering the Plains of Adal freely, many are perhaps wondering what future Absolver updates will look like. In an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, creative lead Pierre Tarno provided a few ideas of what players can expect.
For those players who are already at the game’s current level cap, Absolver is going to be adding a Prestige System that lets you respec your character as well as open up access to rare and unique equipment. “We are currently creating very cool assets and will give a more precise ETA on this very soon,” said Tarno.
The Absolver team is also looking at improving its loot system by introducing a way for players to destroy duplicate pieces of gear in exchange for a dye to customize the color variants of their kit. Inventory management improvements are also in the works.
As for new playable content? Absolver is going to apparently focus mostly on the PvP side of things. “Upcoming new areas will be dedicated to PvP. No ETA yet on new areas and bosses, but it’s something that players request often so this is certainly something we’ll be looking into,” said Tarno.
The devs are also continuing to work on the game’s ongoing lag and connection issues. “Even if it’s often the case for online games, it’s still very annoying for players when you can’t connect to servers for an online game,” admitted Tarno. “We will keep working (very) hard on improving our matchmaking system to detect this better, and ensure everybody has the best possible experience.”
We agree with RPS’ writer in that most of these updates are less ground-breaking and more quality-of-life. Still, smoothing out the overall experience for everyone is usually for the best instead of heaping on new things while ignoring the persistent issues. We’re looking forward to seeing where Absolver goes next.
The music to back a thorough beating can now be yours to own. The Absolver soundtrack has been officially announced today in CD, digital, and a collector’s edition double vinyl with 20 tracks’ worth of tunes for the kung-fu action MMO’s biggest fans.
According to a statement from Wintory, the soundscape of Absolver was themed after the idea of “combat through friendship”. “The music becomes this kind of dance, like the two players are engaged in a ballet together,” said Wintory. “It’s about giving strength to your adversaries, while they strengthen you. Conveniently this approach also helped us avoid the clichés of the martial arts genre.”
The soundtrack was composed by award-winning composer Austin Wintory of Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate and Journey fame, and also features a new exclusive version of Risyn’s boss theme co-produced by Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA. The CD release of Absolver’s soundtrack features original artwork by Costa Rican artist Angela Bermúdez, while the vinyl is pressed on double translucent red heavyweight 180g vinyl with artwork by Hotline Miami’s El Huervo.
Pre-orders for the vinyl and CD edition of the soundtrack can be found on the Laced Records website and are listed to ship sometime in Q4 of 2017. If you’d rather have the music right here and now, digital versions of the soundtrack can be found on Austin Wintory’s Bandcamp page.
Austin Wintory is easily one of gaming’s best recent composers, so we’re sure fans of Absolver and people who just like good music will be interested in snapping up this soundtrack. Which track on the album do you like the most?
The online melee action game Absolver is only a day away from its full release. Just to stir up the pot a little, developer Sloclap and publisher Devolver Digital have released a new Absolver launch trailer, showcasing the game in a much more cinematic fashion than its previous video offerings to this point.
The trailer shows off the two paths of two different Prospects as they cross the Plains of Adal in their search for approval from the mystic Guides and the chance to become an Absolver. The video features a number of in-game action sequences showcasing the game’s active combat model, all culminating in the two combatants ultimately facing off against one another.
Absolver will kick its way onto PlayStation 4 and PC tomorrow – Tuesday, August 29th. You can learn more about the game on its official website and check out the new cinematic trailer below.
We don’t have long to wait before we can get our hands (and our feet) on this one. Absolver definitely looks like one of the more unique games coming to the online multiplayer space and we most definitely want to see how this online brawler feels with other players running around. We’re eager to get started on our own path to Absolution…whatever that means.
