How Amazon Can Foster PvE in New World

Amazon’s New World is one of the more promising new MMOs to be announced in recent years, but from the start it’s been bogged down by worries it will have nothing to offer the PvE player. Initially, it sounded like a pure PvP game; now they seem to be spending more time hyping its PvE aspects, but we still don’t have a clear picture of how the balance will work out in practice. Let’s look at some of the things Amazon could do to foster PvE in New World.

A party of characters ready to pursue PvE in New World. We know the PvP will be optional, seemingly with some kind of a toggle system that will allow players to opt out. That’s a great start, but we don’t really know how viable PvE play will be. If all of the best rewards are only available through PvP then PvE players will be left begging for scraps and probably lose interest quickly.

If Amazon really wants to foster PvE in New World, they need to make meaningful progression for PvE players. It doesn’t need to be perfect parity with PvP in all areas, but there should be options for the monster-slayers among us to have rewards that feel satisfying and attainable.

Something that particularly concerns me right now is housing. Housing seems to be tied to PvP territorial wars, and I think I speak for a lot of PvE players when I say I don’t want the existence or affordability of my in-game home to be beholden to warring factions. I’d accept a smaller or limited home if it meant I could also have safety and stability, regardless of what guild is presently ascendant.

Something else that’s important for PvE in New World to flourish is for the PvE content to actually be fun and engaging. It can’t just can be picking flowers and mindlessly mowing down trash mobs.

PvE could be a great way to flesh out the intriguing lore of the setting of Aeternum. Being more of a sandbox title, I don’t expect New World to be flush with story quests, but there’s still room for occasional narrative adventures, or perhaps environmental puzzles to uncover snippets of lore about the previous failed colonization attempts of Aeternum.

World bosses could also be a great option for PvE in New World. It doesn’t seem like a game where an emphasis on instanced dungeons and raids would make much sense, but open world boss fights similar to those of Guild Wars 2 would be an excellent option to give PvE players an interesting endgame beyond simply farming.

Something like this has already been announced in the form of world events called Corrupted Breaches, in which players face hordes of monsters warped by the magic of Aeternum, so it seems Amazon may be on the right track.

It’s still too early to say with certainty how well PvE in New World will be handled, but the fact that Amazon has already done such a good job of listening to feedback and providing options for PvE players as well as more competitive types is, in this writer’s opinion, a very positive sign, and as a PvE player myself, I feel a cautious but growing optimism toward the game.

Amazon MMORPG New World Preorders Open Now

New World preorders are available now on Steam. In fact, you can find it there but you can’t yet find it on Amazon which is a bit odd considering the MMORPG is being made by Amazon. Along with the preorder being available we have a bit of an idea of when the game will be launching. Or rather, we know that it will be on Steam in 2020 with a closed beta in April.

There had been some concern about New World’s future after the alpha was taken offline in May for a major revamp of its features. News on the game then went completely quiet and concerns that development on the game had quietly ended started to rise. It would seem those concerns were unfounded though.

It isn’t clear from the little information about the game on Steam what changes Amazon made to the game while it was offline. It’s likely we will have to wait until the beta has started to find that out. What we do know is that the game will use third party DRM.

There are two options for New World preorders, Deluxe and Standard. The standard version comes with closed beta access, Isabella’s Amulet, a unique title, the Fist Bump Emote, and a guild crest set. The Deluxe Edition has everything from the preorder plus: Woodsman Armor Skin, Woodsman Boarding Axe Skin, Mastiff House Pet, Rock/Paper/Scissors Emote, and a New World digital artbook.

Amazon to Co-Create the New Lord of the Rings MMO

Since late last year we’ve been hearing about a new Lord of the Rings MMO in the works with Leyou Technologies, well it seems that Amazon is getting on the Lord of the Rings MMO as well. Today it was announced that the two would be collaborating and co-developing the MMO.

Thanks to the press release announcing this we also know that the game will be free to play and won’t be related to the upcoming Amazon Prime show. The two companies will develop the game in a joint effort and then it will be marketed and published by Amazon globally, with the exception of China.

A Dwarf in LOTRO, the other Lord of the Rings MMO

“We’re committed to bringing customers games of the highest quality, both with our own original IP as well as beloved cultural pillars like The Lord of the Rings,” said Christoph Hartmann, VP, Amazon Game Studios. “Tolkien’s Middle-earth is one of the richest fictional worlds in history, and it gives our team of experienced MMO developers – from the same studio developing New World – tremendous opportunity to play and create. We have a strong leadership team in place to helm this new project, and we’re actively growing our team to help build this incredible experience.”

“Bringing Middle-earth to life necessitates having the very best partners, and Amazon’s customer obsession, technology, and talented teams make it the ideal choice for a co-developer and publisher,” said Alex Xu, CEO of Leyou Technologies Holdings. “We believe our combined resources and expertise will result in a beautiful and compelling game that customers will love and play for years to come.”

Sadly at this point, we still don’t have anything resembling a release date. But it is safe to assume we are still several years away from the game being playable.

Wargaming Announces a Next-Gen F2P MMO Shooter

Wargaming announces a next-gen F2P MMO Shooter that they’re working on with Frag Lab. They’ll be using nearly a dozen Amazon Web Services products to make the game including Amazon GameLift, and Lumberyard. Why this was mentioned and took up about half the press release announcing the project I can’t really say, but they seem to think it’s important. Or they’re using it as an ad. Either way, we’ve mentioned it and now we’re moving on to the bits people actually care about.

This is Warface, Not the newly announced game of which there are no images.

Here are a couple of quotes from Wargaming and Frag Lab about their new partnership.

“When Frag Lab approached us with their vision of what they wanted to develop, we felt that it perfectly matched our core values, and their passion was palpable,” states Shahzad Khan, Product Director, Wargaming. “We knew by combining their experience working on a successful shooter with our unrivaled free-to-play expertise, together we could bring this vision to life.”

“Having Wargaming as a publishing partner was the obvious choice for us; they have a great wealth of experience in delivering successful titles to players worldwide,” states Maxim Dembik, Frag Lab CEO. “We started this ambitious project from scratch with nothing but our collective knowledge, and this gave us the opportunity to choose any technology we wanted. We’re always looking to embrace new tech and we’re glad we did: Amazon Lumberyard is the perfect fit for our vision.”

Sadly there isn’t really much more to be said about the game right now. But the press release announcing the game does say that a public announcement which will feature more details is scheduled for later this year. So consider this your announcement of the announcement.
