WoW Wednesday: The Rewards of Korrak’s Revenge!

World of Warcraft’s 15th anniversary is now in full swing, with events aplenty for players to dig into. On top of the LFR-styled ‘Memory’ Raids, which cover famous bosses from Warcraft’s first three expansions, Alterac Valley has returned! Based on the original build of the famous Epic 40-Man Battleground, Korrak’s Revenge is a seasonal brawl available through January 7th 2019. With no reinforcements, evolving NPC assaults and a ton of rewards scattered throughout, this is a densely packed holiday event. This week we’ll be peeling apart the particulars and set out a path to maximize your rewards!

The Alterac Valley of olde is infamous amongst Vanilla Purists and regular community goers for how long its matches were. Some took several days due to the deadlocks players would face on the battleground. Due to the variety of scaling in Korrak’s Revenge, however, most matches take roughly as much time as a regular Alterac Valley; up towards several hours long. Accessible from level 60, Korrak’s Revenge is a fantastic way to power level your characters with the anniversary experience buff.

The main draw, however, is the two limited time mounts. Featuring updated versions of the classic Alterac Valley faction mounts, the Frostwolf Snarler and the Stormpike Battle are completely remastered mounts. Featuring higher resolution textures and updated rigging based on newer model skeletons, these are two VERY excellent mounts. Rewarded from the achievement ‘Alterac Valley of Olde’ you’ll need to earn 200 Timewarped Badges while playing in Korrak’s Revenge. This currency can be used elsewhere in conjunction with Timewalking events, and this provides the best opportunity to grind quite a bit for rep tokens, mounts or toys.

“Raised in the Alterac Mountains and trained to bite dwarves.”

At first glance, Alterac Valley of Olde may seem easy to complete. Most players will pick up the breadcrumb quest, “Soldier of Time,” which rewards 400 Timewarped Badges for gaining 500 honor inside the Battleground. While this is an easy, and recommended, quest to complete none of these badges will contribute to your total. Instead, you’ll need to rely on the quests in Korrak’s Revenge.

The biggest thing to regularly perform will be COMPLETING the battleground itself. Currently, in the EU, zerging towers and the Alterac Generals has fallen back into the popular meta-strategy. Thankfully, this results in quicker games more often, and simply falls to whichever team can complete strategies quicker. In order to kill Drek’thar or Vandarr Stormpike, you’ll need to burn down every bunker and tower on your way to the enemy team’s base. Each has a nearly 3 minute cap timer, in which you’ll need to defend your claim until it is destroyed. Capturing graveyards along the way is essential to your team’s reinforcement and rewspawning. Winning a match in Korrak’s Revenge will net you 20 Timewarped Badges, while a loss will net you 10.

While most matches may go quickly there are still an incredible host of quests to perform, most of which are daily. A number are not, however, and work as breadcrumb or introductory quests. Korrak the Bloodrager and The Legend of Korrak will see players facing off against the chieftain of the Winterax Trolls. In an effort to control the Field of Strife, the Alliance and Horde will send players to slay this Champion and claim his territory for the respective faction.

Other one-time quests will see you assisting third parties in the Valley. Master Ryson’s All Seeing Eye is given to players by members of the Syndacite, the criminal survivors of the fallen Human Kingdom. Stolen by the Winterax trolls, the object of the same name has been taken deep into their territory. It will require players to group up to fight the elite creatures and push through to the Orb itself. The first faction to push into the caves and save Master Engineer Zinfizzlex will unlock his quest. Zinfizzlex’s Portable Shredder Unit will reward a portable killing vehicle for use in the Valley during the event, and all he requires are some (legally) acquired materials. Each quest will reward 10 Timewarped badges.

There are also a multitude of repeatable daily quests. Each will give 10 Timewarped Badges for your first turn-in every day, while some which include resource deposits will give an additional 2 badges every turn in. Most of the daily quests will involve capturing objectives, such as personally claiming a graveyard, capturing a tower or claiming a mine for a faction. Resources, such as armor scraps or crystals, can be collected off of the bodies of slain enemies and turned into NPCs at your home base. Once daily you can also collect resources from each mine and turn them in for 10 Timewarped Badges.

Not popularly mentioned is a quest that is given at your faction’s stable master. Awarding 2 Badges for each turn in, you must capture an Alterac Ram or Frost Wolf for your respective faction. This is a repeatable quest up until the stables are full, which takes some 20-30 turn-ins. If you join a match late, and your team is already zerging to the enemy base, this can be a great way to quickly collect a few extra badges. Just beware of preying Druids and Rogues!

“I seem to be a little out of sorts today…”

Once you are done waging war inside the Valley, there are still more rewards OUTSIDE. At the world queuing locatins for Alterac Valley, some of the older vendors have crossed into an odd aspect of time. At each entrance in the Alterac Mountains, Jorek Ironside and Thanthaldis Snowgleam have both become displaced in the time ways and are offering unique and old items. Costing both Marks of Honor and Timewarped badges, these two vendors will not only be offering some of the regular fare, but also several removed appearances that have not been seen in-game since before Cataclysm. Some are unique to specific armor types, such as mail and cloth, and must be purchased on characters of that armor class to unlock and save the appearance. Others will require you to kill Korrak before they can be unlocked for purchase. These removed items will only be available while Korrak’s Revenge is ongoing, and on January 7th they’ll be once more gone forever!

For the next two weeks, Fiesta Online celebrates its 11th birthday with a cupcake war. First, can we just stop to acknowledge the fact that this MMORPG is still going strong after 11 years? Not many games can say that, so a huge congrats to the Fiesta Online team.

Notch Will be Excluded from Minecraft Anniversary Events

Just a month after the news broke that references to the creator of Minecraft were being removed from the game we’ve learned that this wasn’t the end now we know that Notch will be excluded from Minecraft Anniversary events that are coming quite soon. A press event is being held in Mojang’s office in Stockholm on May 17th, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the iconic game.

Minecraft

Speaking to Variety a representative of Microsoft was quite forward in stating their reasons for not including Notch in the events. “His comments and opinions do not reflect those of Microsoft or Mojang and are not representative of Minecraft.” Basically confirming what everyone already knew, Notch’s social media statements are toxic to the Minecraft brand and Microsoft wants to distance themselves as much as possible.

These days Notch is somewhat notorious on Twitter for his distasteful political views. In the past, he has tweeted support for a heterosexual pride day as well as having what was considered by many a white privilege meltdown. He’s also known for using the term feminist as an insult and has called a female game developer an fing c-word, just…with the proper words used. His bigoted views are a stark contrast from the very family friendly game that he created.

While it is very sad that Notch won’t be involved in the 10th-anniversary event being held, after all, Minecraft, a 10-year-old game with more than 91 million monthly players was his creation, it is also important to remember that Notch hasn’t been involved with the game since 2014. So while his contributions to the game can’t be denied his importance has faded and it is the Mojang team who are deserving of the praise and attention.

Congratulations Mojang on 10 years of Minecraft! Here’s hoping for another 10.

Star Trek Online Introducing Captain Killy for Mirror of Discovery

Star Trek Online is introducing Captain Killy and the I.S.S Discovery in Mirror of Discovery. Mirror of Discovery will take players through two new episodes that feature Captain Killy in the events that took place after the TV series. Captain Killy will, of course, be voiced by Mary Wiseman, the actress who plays Ensign Tilly on Star Trek: Discovery.

But Mirror of Discovery isn’t the only thing Star Trek Online players have to look forward to right now. This month Star Trek Online is celebrating their 9th anniversary! To celebrate they’re bringing back the ever-popular Omega Molecule Stabilization event. Players who stabilize Q’s Omega particles can earn free Omega Particle tech upgrades as well as prize voucher which can be turned in to get a new T6 Vulcan Scout Ship as was seen in Star Trek: Discovery.

A new Personal Endeavor System is also being introduced. It will allow players to complete daily challenges to earn account-wide performance boosts. Plus, by popular demand, the Battle at the Binary Stars Event is now available as a Task Force Operation.

There’s also a whole lot more Star Trek: Discovery to come to Star Trek Online in the coming weeks. Keep an eye out for a new Task Force Operation that takes players to Pahvo for another uprising against the Terran Empire. There will also be new Discovery related Task Force Operation rewards. More information about those will be available on the Star Trek Online official blog in the near future.

Also, if you enjoyed Star Trek: Discovery season 1 this is your reminder that the second season has started and the first episode is already available on CBS All Access.

Global Community Project Celebrates FFXIV 5th Anniversary

ffxiv anniversary

One of the most precious things about Final Fantasy XIV is the sheer amount of players willing to go above and beyond to create communities, content, and foster one of the kindest communities I’ve experienced in an MMO. In today’s article, I talk with Varicray about his global initiative project to mark the five year FFXIV anniversary which intends to not only bring the wider community closer but to also raise money for the ‘1000 Dreams Fund’. Hundreds of content creators have already joined the community, offering their time, support and creative energies to the project.

Each year Final Fantasy XIV marks its anniversary with an event called ‘The Rising’. This year we aid Dural Tharal from the Mythril Eye in his quest to discover more about the Calamity from those who experienced it. The quest sets to highlight the history of this devastating moment in Eorzean history along with highlighting the heroic actions of countless adventurers.

Once again, Naoki Yoshida reprises his role as the ‘Wandering Minstrel’ in order to convey his and his team’s heartfelt message to us, the players, who have found ourselves a home within his world. We also gain access to instanced content called ‘The Calamity Retold’ where players take to the streets of Ul’Dah to battle against various challenging monsters with other adventurers in a recreation of the events preceding the Calamity. Players are rewarded tokens for each monster they kill, which they can spend on event items. The Rising also rewards a minion and orchestrion roll.

To me, this is one of the more special events as it feels like a direct connection between each and every player to the games’ producer and director. I just want to blub at the monitor ‘thank you Yoshi P!!’ Everyone on the development team at Square Enix has given us such an amazing world to build very special memories within.

Which leads me onto what this article is truly about: community.

Hydaelyn International

What is it? Hydaelyn International is a community project which will be organizing various events, streams, and creative projects to celebrate the FFXIV 5th year Anniversary and beyond.
When is it? September 14-16, starting at 7 PM EDT, or midnight in the UK.
Founder: Varicray
Community: Discord link

This year FFXIV celebrates their 5th year anniversary and I’ve been lucky enough to be included in this global community project, founded by Varicray.

Vari very kindly agreed to answer my questions listed below and provide all the information you could need about the project which will be going live this coming weekend.

What is Hydaelyn International?

Hydaelyn International is a community collaboration project which will run events and streams. There will be fundraising in aid of the 1000 Dreams Fund which is an organization that helps young women in tech to get financed to achieve their goals, be it education, content creation or otherwise. We think that’s an admirable and important goal as gamers ourselves that enjoy and use a lot of tech on a daily basis.

What will happen is that most, if not all of our streamers will plan server or region-specific events, inviting everyone to play with them or together with other streamers. The idea is to flood Twitch and lift the game up in the game directory and celebrate its 5 year anniversary as a combined community to show our appreciation. Everyone else who’s not a streamer may contribute in whatever way they can and play with a lot of us as well live on various streams.

Summary

  • The event will focus on celebrating the FFXIV 5th anniversary, HI will together as a community celebrate with events, streams, articles, art & other things. It starts at 7 PM EDT / 12 AM BST on September 14 or September 15 at 7 AM AWST for the people in Australia. We will run an optional to join charity with this.

  • Each datacenter has leaders planning events with fellow streamers, friends and viewers. Everyone involved with streams will be listed under the FFXIVHI Twitch community. Some of our partners will also run events, streams, podcasts and do things on their own, or with others.

  • The event goes on for 48H to give everyone plenty of time to take part, stream or undertake another project within the allotted time frame. It’s very relaxed & it had to be this way due to short notice, up to 16 hours time difference with participants & just the sheer size of HI itself.
  • Once the event is done, HI will move on to expand its features while also planning for the next event, this time with a lot more prep-time. The ultimate goal & also my original idea & intent is to turn this into a social gathering hub for all sorts of creative people to come together.

More about the Founder

Before we skip on ahead to more details about HI, let’s find out a little more about the leader of this project, Vari, and his experiences in relation to Final Fantasy XIV.

Please tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m Vari, a 29-year-old Swedish full-time FFXIV focused streamer with a passion for community relationships and building long-lasting connections between people. I work part-time in IT privately and I usually play video games on a daily basis.

In FFXIV I main a Lalafell Bard (Vari Cray) on Odin on the Chaos datacenter but I also play a lot of other jobs quite frequently. I lead our FC’s static and I’m one of it’s officers as well. At heart and skill, I’ve always been a more raid focused player in any MMORPG.

Varicray by MyutoEve.

I come from a long history of playing MMORPG’s. I found FFXIV during Patch 3.3 and quickly got involved with the game’s existing community which I really enjoyed. I enjoyed the game and its open job system and most of the content it had to offer. I found friends, like-minded people and a place to fit in more than I used to in other previous game communities. I actually never even met people I played with in real life until FFXIV and that was also big for me. My experience with the game and the community around it has been mostly positive, for me, in overall.

What inspired you to create this event?

The developers (Square Enix) just recently did a 14-hour long celebration stream and have many other things going on worldwide. So I sat there one evening thinking “This is something we as players could do as well, let’s see how many content creators I can get in on this”. From that point on everything just expanded and escalated extremely quickly. We included everyone who has a creative spark within themselves to freely contribute FFXIV content.

How did you begin to organize such a large-scale event?

I started with asking fellow co-streamers that I’ve done work or projects with before, in the end, I think I’ve contacted or been contacted by probably 150-200 people during this process and more come in as word spreads.

I started out alone but have since got a bit more extra help from other project members, it’s been a crazy ride these last four days of planning, to say the least.

Event Example

Although events will vary in game content, here’s one of the events put together by Tarno from Mateus:

Poster by Yomi.

Date: Friday September 14th at 8:00PM EST
Server: Mateus
Location: Plot: Mist Ward 13, Plot 5

Genisys is a popular Nightclub FC that throws server wide, Mixed-RP events for the Mateus community; rewarding such as Mogstation prizes. To celebrate the 5-year anniversary with the Hydaelyn International project, our nightclub theme is Hydaelyn Adventurer. Come as your best you. We will not be judging glams this time around as we understand that there will be alts joining Mateus for this event. Instead we’ll be rewarding over $50 worth of Mogstation prizes through our door raffle. Partygoers will have a shot to win the new Mogstation mount Red Hare an account wide item!

Our events are Mixed-RP. You will find RPers and non-RPers in attendance. For RP purposes we have a custom-made drink and dinner menu for the club we will also be providing a RL music playlist.

Taking Part

How many communities and countries are currently involved?

Right now we have six official community partners and there will likely be many more on the way. The reception has been incredibly exciting, strong and at this time everything is incredibly busy. Right now we have Aetherflow Media, a fan magazine who will do a podcast during the event and cover what transpired during it with some articles. We have The Wandering Unity, a FFXIV creator hub, who will help promote the event and just back us up with planning. Another fan magazine called Fat Cat Chronicles will be taking part, they have been helping out by listing participants, promoting the community and just doing a lot of grunt work. They will also make some content post the event to showcase.

ffxiv anniversary

We also have two screenshot communities with us, FFXIVSnaps and GPOSERS. FFXIVSnaps will provide us with image coverage of the event and take character portraits of attendees. GPOSERS will provide their own streamer coverage and do a few articles as well after the event. Lastly we have Maelstrom Media, a stream podcast who will help us with promotion, streaming and more. We have other participants pending community and project requests from others that needs to be communicated and agreed upon.

How can other players contribute to the project?

Anyone who has a drive or passion for anything creative can take part and contribute however much they like into the project, it’s all fully optional.

It doesn’t matter how small or big it is, we leave that up to you!

If you are not a content creator can you still take part?

Yes, we don’t define the ‘content creator’ to strictly live streaming or video editing. We have artists, writers, cosplayers, musicians, community leaders, screenshot editors, designers and all sorts of creative people on board.

Creations by the HI community. Credits to Eli, Yomi, Mochibuni, Ameme and Aria.

If you don’t possess any creative skills, you can still contribute just by supporting us as well and join us during the various events. We’re all inclusive, that’s our goal.

Do you have a list of events/times per-server and what types of events will be taking place?

We don’t have a list right now but have several leaders for each region planning loads of in-game events and our partners are planning their own things. Each individual streamer will be dealing with their viewers or other streamers as well.

How can players support the event during the week?

Watch your favorite streamer during the event, give us feedback and play some Final Fantasy XIV with us. You mean as much to us as we do to you!

Logo by Yomi.

What do you hope will be achieved?

We are hoping to achieve nothing less than a tremendously big, active, fun, heartfelt and inclusive event to celebrate the game and its community.

Will you be looking to leave a lasting legacy?

Yes, once the event is over the community will keep existing and become a hub for all content creators to plan future events and also advise/teach our skills to others.

Do you have a dedicated website where updated information can be easily found?

We have a Discord server that will become public in the next few days, but also started an official Twitter account and a Twitch community for everyone to check out. No website plans as of right now, but the future isn’t fully decided yet!

Thank you for reading! Please accept my sincerest apologies for being unable to produce articles lately, hopefully I’ll be back very soon with a continuation of the Photography to Screenshot principles series, ReShade and GPose guides. I will also be trying to take part in the HI anniversary celebration by streaming a creative take on FFXIV by purging my current filter package and starting ReShade from scratch and offering up the filters in return.

If you would like me to write on a particular topic later down the line in relation to today’s article or screenography just let me know in the comments below or via Twitter.

Wizard101 Celebrates 10 Years

Ten years of operation is one heck of a milestone for any MMO and Wizard101 has now entered that exclusive club, so naturally it’s time to celebrate! The Wizard101 10th anniversary is looking to do precisely that, bringing players a big swath of gifts and several in-game events.

wizard101 10th anniversary

As is often the case with MMO birthdays, players are the ones getting the goodies as a thank-you for the support. A dedicated page has outlined all of the details, with information on the birthday quest, new Decade Pets to collect, special fish to catch, and 10 unique items for your character to collect among other goings-on.

“As we reflect on the success of the game, the time players have spent in our world and the deep friendships they have formed, we are thrilled to see the community and game continue to grow,” remarked KingsIsle CEO Elie Akilian.

The team is also looking onward from here, with the conclusion of the Empyrea storyline and the start of a three-year story arc on the horizon. For now, most of the special events for the Wizard101 anniversary will be running all through this month.

Our Thoughts

A hearty congratulations to the Wizard101 team for not only making it this far but growing in significant ways, be it mechanically or via the Steam release. There are probably plenty of folks who assume a “kiddie game” like this one wouldn’t have staying power, but it’s clear those naysayers have been wrong for a significant length of time. We’re looking forward to what’s next!

Six Years of Guild Wars 2 Marked with Infographic and Video

Happy birthday to Guild Wars 2! The MMO has officially been online for six years and that’s most definitely reason to look back and celebrate. That’s just what the Guild Wars 2 sixth anniversary infographic and video sent over to us is doing.

guild wars 2 sixth anniversary

As one would expect, the infographic has lots of interesting numerical trivia for fans of the MMORPG. Of note is the fact that, collectively, players have spent over 100k years’ worth of time playing Guild Wars 2. The graphic also offers a look at the most popular mounts and the most and least successful threats to players in the game.

The video, meanwhile, talks up the past six years of content updates and features such as Fractals, raids, legendary weapons and the like. The close of the video offers word that season 5 of Guild Wars 2’s Living World will move “directly” from Season 4. The next season will add a new Fractal; a new raid; and Sun’s Refuge, a “personal character instance” players can rebuild with NPCs, collections and rewards that will likely strike very familiar to vets from the original Guild Wars game.

We’ll start with the infographic:

…and now that you’ve taken that all in, you can check the video below.

Our Thoughts

Yes, happy anniversary indeed to Guild Wars 2! We’re certain players of the game are already chomping at the bit to find out just what this new episode of the Living World season has in store, particularly as it relates to the Sun’s Refuge instance.

Cat Rescues and Cake Mark Champions Online’s Ninth Anniversary

While many mourn the death of City of Heroes or otherwise wait for any number of legacy projects to form into an actually playable game, Champions Online has been rolling on for nine years now, and the devs are ready to celebrate the Champions Online ninth anniversary in the most obvious way possible: rescuing cats from trees.

champions online ninth anniversary

Yes, the ninth anniversary of Champions Online will let the heroes of Millenium City do the most heroic thing they possibly can by rescuing cats that have found themselves stuck in trees around the map. If players rescue enough kitty friends, they’ll receive access to new feline pets each week.

If rescuing cats isn’t somehow your thing (you monster), then there’s also going to be a humongous in-game cake in the center of town, which marks the spot for a dance party players can have fun in. There will also be regular challenges for players to tackle.

The party runs all month long from now until September 27th. Further details are expected to be shared on the game’s website starting next week, but initial details can be found here for the time being.

Our Thoughts

Nine lives, nine years…get it? Hah! Puns. We would like to congratulate the folks at Champions Online for a nine year run. Honestly, we were surprised at the length of time this particular superheroic MMO has been running, but clearly it has its fans and we hope those fans enjoy the in-game celebration. And we also hope they save all the cats.

Final Fantasy XIV’s The Rising 2018 Gets Dates and Details

Final Fantasy XIV fans can mark their calendars for the MMORPG’s fifth year celebration. The Rising 2018 will bring a new event to players with some new rewards. Maybe another in-game thank you from the avatar version of producer Naoki Yoshida, who knows.

the rising 2018

Specific details about what this year’s Rising event involve are rather scant, but we can at least confirm that the event will begin on Sunday, August 26th at 8am PDT/11am EST and end on Monday, September 17th at 3am PDT/6am EST. Players are asked to report to an NPC at the Steps of Nald in Ul’dah to begin the related questline.

At the end of this year’s anniversary waits a new Orchestrion roll, two sets of earrings that will likely look familiar to the game’s veteran players, and a minion version of the Au Ra NPC Cirina Mol.

In addition to FFXIV’s fifth anniversary, the game’s screenshot artists are challenged to create their best summer-themed shots in celebration of the Moonfire Faire. That contest is running until August 31st. Details on how to enter and what you should consider including in your shot are here.

Our Thoughts

The month of celebration in Final Fantasy XIV is certainly coming to a rise. Hah! Get it? Because…the event’s name is…nevermind. Bad puns aside, we’d once more like to wish the devs of this MMORPG a happy anniversary and hope that the quest steps for this year’s Rising event are entertaining to fans.
