Now is the Best Time to Come Back to Pokemon Go

Pokemon Go is now two years old and still going strong. If this has come as a surprise to you, you aren’t alone. While 800 million people downloaded the game when it was brand new, the hype and novelty quickly wore off. However, that still left a dedicated core audience who are still going out regularly to catch em all. Niantic, the creators of Pokemon Go are still hard at work on bringing updates to the game and holding events that bring the community together. Pokemon Go is, in fact, enjoying a boom right now making now the best time to come back to Pokemon Go.

Maybe you were one of those who started playing when everyone was doing it and you got bored with it. Or maybe you’ve opened up the app a few times here and there just to see what’s going on. Either way, there is something new for you.

Back to Pokemon Go

In July 2017, raids were introduced that bring players together at gyms to fight raid level Pokemon and get Legendary Pokemon. March 2018 brought the introduction of a quest system that allows you to obtain mythical Pokemon like Mew. But most recently, it is the addition of trading Pokemon and having friends that has everyone coming back again.

Players can trade Pokemon with their friends who are in close proximity to them. There are of course some restrictions on being able to trade the special Pokemon and it does cost stardust to perform a trade but, the feature is there. A gifting system has also encouraged players to head back out to Pokestops to get gifts to give friends all over the world. A Pokemon Go player in Portland, Oregon can take delight in getting a gift from someone in a small village in Ireland. There are hundreds of Facebook groups, forums, and Reddit posts looking for people who will exchange gifts. Giving gifts not only gives your friends loot but it also increases your friendship level. When your friendship level reaches a new height you get new rewards, including a pretty decent chunk of XP.

Pokestops themselves have been improved. There are more of them than there used to be and those that do exist are in slightly better locations. Ones that were in the middle of roundabouts are now off to one side of the road, making it a safer location for kids of all ages.

Niantic is still hosting events around the world that are drawing in crowds over more than 100,000 people from all over the world. But yes, they do still have some difficulties when large crowds like this are all trying to use the internet at the same time and bugs prevent people from playing.

The next generation of Pokemon, that will be generation 4, is going to be on its way eventually. This opens up the opportunity for more than 100 new Pokemon to be introduced to the game. Plus at E3 this year we heard about Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee, two games that will tie in with Pokemon Go and allow you to transfer Pokemon from Go to Let’s Go. That game will be coming out this fall on the Nintendo Switch.

Since Pokemon Go launched it has had $1.8 billion in revenue. It crossed the $1 billion line in January 2017. This means that players are spending $2 million on average every day. It won’t come as a surprise to anyone to learn that the United States and Japan top the all-time player spending chart. They’ve spent $607 million and $500 million respectively. Germany, Great Britain, and Taiwan are also in the top 5. Google Play accounts for 58% of revenue.

Niantic is still planning on growing the game too. There’s one last country they’re hoping to roll out the game to, China. They’re partnering with NetEase to bring Pokemon Go to the country. There’s no clear idea yet when that will happen, or if it will happen at all though as China has very strict laws about foreign media being released in the country.

This year Niantic has acquired two companies, augmented reality company Escher Reality was the first. At the time it was announced that Niantic planned to allow third-party developers to build AR games similar to Pokemon Go. The second company was Matrix Mill, a computer vision, and machine learning company. This acquisition advances Niantic’s efforts to provide more realistic AR experiences. In a demo when the acquisition was announced, the world saw video footage of Pikachu running behind objects on the ground and hiding behind it. If applied to Pokemon Go this could add a whole new level of difficulty to catching Pokemon. At least for those who can use AR mode.

Niantic has been working to make Pokemon Go more fun to play for everyone and thanks to all the changes, plus the amazing summer weather half the world is experiencing it looks like we’re all going out to enjoy the game again. So if you’re looking for something to do this summer and you need to get out of the house load up Pokemon Go and head out on an adventure. You never know where you’ll end up or who you’ll meet along the way. Invite your friends along and make a day of it, you certainly won’t be the only ones.

7 Multiplayer Mobile Games You Should Play in 2018

With all the talk recently about how mobile games are dominating the scene and the fact that summer vacation is right around the corner, we thought it was time to take a look at 7 multiplayer mobile games you should play in 2018.

Release Date: March 11, 2014
Developer: Blizzard
Platform: iOS, Android
Genre: Card Game

Hearthstone is a great game for anyone who only has 10-15 minutes to spare in between things, as well as a great game to play for long periods of time. Its one of the oldest games on this list but don’t let its age fool you. The game is still going strong with more than 70 million registered players as of May 2017. In August 2017 it was making as much as $70 million per month so it is safe to say that Hearthstone isn’t going anywhere any time soon. The most recent expansion to the game, The Witchwood was released in mid-April 2018 and included a single player mode called Monster Hunt.

Shadowgun Legends

Release Date: March 22, 2018
Developer: Madfinger Games
Platform: iOS, Android
Genre: FPS

If you’re looking to get your Destiny fix while you’re on the road then Shadowgun Legends is the game for you. The game is gorgeous and constantly being compared to Destiny, with good reason! The game has only been live for a few months now but it spent quite a while in development and it’s also the third game in the Shadowgun series. It is incredibly well polished and a total blast to play. Thanks to it being the third game in the series it has a large, dedicated fanbase. This is another great game for when you’re short on time you can spend playing in one sitting.

Release Date: December 14, 2013
Developer: Niantic
Platform: iOS, Android
Genre: Location-based AR

If you thought Pokemon Go was fun for a little while but found yourself craving more then you might want to try its older brother, Ingress. Ingress will take you to interesting locations all over the world as you fight on one side of a war that spans the globe. There aren’t any Pokemon to catch, instead, you’ll be catching memories. It makes a fantastic tool for sightseeing and you can even play it at the airport. It has a built-in chat system so you’ll be able to coordinate with locals wherever you go. The Ingress community is incredibly involved, with most large cities hosting weekly faction meetups. That makes it a great way to meet new people while you travel.

Release Date: December 19, 2016
Developer: Mojang
Platform: iOS, Android
Genre: Sandbox

Its Minecraft, do I really need to say more?

Oh….my editor says I do.

Well, unlike other games on this list Minecraft isn’t free to play, you can pick it up in your device’s store for $6. It isn’t quite as good as the PC version, but if you’re hoping to lure your Minecraft addicted child away from the computer this is a good way to do it. It can be played alone or you can go multiplayer with your friends. Because of its sandbox nature, you can easily pick it up and put it down as much as you need to. Though if we’re being honest you’re more likely to end up getting sucked in for the whole day, so if your plan is to lay on a beach and play a bit of Minecraft you might want to put some sunblock on first. We wouldn’t want you to turn into a lobster. This is the sort of game that makes you wish you had packed your power bank.

PUBG Mobile

Release Date: March 19, 2018
Developer: PUBG Corp
Platform: iOS, Android
Genre: Battle Royale

Ooooh, here we go being controversial by putting PUBG at number 3! This is a decision based purely on the numbers. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds doesn’t seem to be doing amazingly on mobile. That’s not to say that it isn’t popular, it really, really is. It just isn’t making as much money as their biggest competitor. The Battle Royale genre is the current fad for this summer and you can fully expect to see people playing one of the two biggest titles in the genre on their phone everywhere you go. As this game is a literal life or death kind of game, we can’t recommend you play it if you’re going to be distracted a lot or you only have a short time to play. But if you’re stuck in the backseat of the car or on an airplane then this game will do just fine to help you pass the time.

Release Date: July 2, 2015
Developer: Super Evil Megacorp
Platform: iOS, Android
Genre: MOBA

Remember a couple years ago when MOBAs were the big craze that every studio was chasing? Believe it or not, the MOBA scene is actually still going strong, and not just in esports. No one is making new MOBAs anymore, but we do have some older gems that are still worth playing. The best MOBA to be released on mobile was Vainglory and you can still play it right now.

Fortnite Mobile

Release Date: April 2018
Developer: Epic
Platform: iOS, Android (coming soon)
Genre: Battle Royale

If you’ve been following gaming at all this year, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that Fortnite is number one on our list. The game has been dominating gaming since it released and it doesn’t look like it will be slowing down anytime soon. At the moment it’s only available on iOS but it is set to release on Android sometime this summer. It’s free to play and has in-game monetization that fans don’t find annoying at all. In fact, on average Fortnite mobile players are spending more money than those playing PUBG, so Epic must be doing something right.

The MMO Alpha and Beta List: September 15, 2017

For a moment I considered posting the lyrics to Wild Wild West and leaving this week’s MMO Alpha and Beta List summary at that, but I came to my senses rather quickly. The good news is that Wild West Online is now in Alpha!

From the makers of Verdun comes an all-new World War 1 shooter called Tannenberg. Early access for it begins November 16th.

Viking badassery Valnir Rok is headed for Early Access as well, expect to see it start September 26th.

If you own Fortnite you can log into the test server and try out Battle Royale.

Closed Beta on Royal Blood begins September 25th.

And if you don’t have enough vehicle-based arena battles in your life check out Switchblade which is in closed beta for PC and PS4.

Waterfight game Battle Splash is now in Open Beta and you can look forward to Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands PvP in open beta from September 21st to the 25th.

Thanks to our friends over at MassivelyOP we discovered Seed this week and filed it under announced but unplayable. Along with it, we added ARG Wizardry game Maguss. It looks like what you’d get it Harry Potter and Pokemon Go had a baby. I for one cannot wait to play!

Majestic The Card Game has finished its Kickstarter campaign.Sadly it was not successful.

Another card game has been spotted on Kickstarter this week though! Champions of Megara is looking to raise €50,000.

You can find all of these games and many more in the list below. Keep an eye out for the new  flag for everything new this week.
