Games Like World of Warcraft in 2019

For more than a decade now World of Warcraft has dominated the MMORPG genre and helped shape the development of the entire genre. But nothing gold can stay. The bad news is that there are very few AAA MMORPGs being developed anymore. The good news is that there are still quite a few amazing ones out there you can play right now. Below is a list of games like World of Warcraft that you can download and jump into right now. It isn’t in any particular order, we wanted to mix in a variety of options to try to cover what everyone might be looking for. We did a similar list back in 2015 but felt it was time to give the topic another look.

Final Fantasy XIV

ffxiv anniversary

Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV) may very well be the best MMORPG that is currently available on the market. It has had three amazing expansions, the most recent being Shadowbringers in July 2019. Shadowbringers was praised by many fans of the game to be the best MMORPG expansion there has ever been. On Metacritic the expansion has a critic score of 91 (out of 100) and a user score of 8.9 (Out of 10). This puts it in the number one spot for best PC game of 2019 on Metacritic.

Something that makes FFXIV stand out from other MMORPGs is that you are able to level all classes and jobs on one character. So, if you’re the type of person who enjoys trying out everything you won’t have to roll up a new character to do it. On the other hand, if you like having a lot of alts FFXIV may not be for you. This is a dungeon-based game and getting through the storyline will require you to complete dungeons.

Tera is a fantasy MMORPG that came out in North America and Europe in 2012, then released on consoles worldwide in April 2018. It uses action combat and a non-target battle system. This basically means that you have to make sure you’ve got your enemy in front of you in the cross-hair cursor in order to execute an attack. For anyone who is used to the old fashioned tab targeting that is usually found in MMOs this can be a difficult hurdle to overcome. Those that do get past it enjoy Tera for its many unique and interesting classes and the constant updates that are coming to the game despite its age. It’s clear that Tera still has many more years of life left in it so don’t let its age scare you away.

Guild Wars 2

Guild Wars 2 is without a doubt the most beautiful MMORPG there has ever been. It is absolutely gorgeous and the developers at ArenaNet know it. Fashion is a big part of the Guild Wars 2 experience, so much so that the game has the nickname Fashion Wars. It is broadly considered a more casual friendly MMO than most but that doesn’t mean there aren’t challenges to be found. It’s a great game if you prefer to play your MMOs solo. The story is designed with a solo player in mind but there are still tons of opportunities for groups to play together too.

So far, Guild Wars 2 has had 2 expansions but it also gets content updates every 3 months. These include a brand new zone, another part in the ongoing story, and lots of beautiful weapon skins It also has a lively PvP scene with two different types of PvP to pick from.

For many MMO players today Runescape was their first love. The game has been around since 2001, making it even older than World of Warcraft. But, just because it’s nearly 20 years old doesn’t mean it is slowing down or that it looks 20 year old. It has had a number of updates over the years as technology has advanced.

Runescape isn’t for everyone though. The game puts a big emphasis on grinding which can be really unattractive to a lot of people. A lot of people also say that the community isn’t very newbie friendly. Which can be quite difficult to overcome if you’re looking for a communal experience from your MMORPG.

Blade & Soul

Midnight Skypetal Plains Raid

Blade & Soul is sometimes called the World of Warcraft of Asia and despite its massive popularity in the East it rarely grabs headlines in the West. Which is unfortunate because it is a very good game that is a blast to play. It has been so popular in Asia that it had a 13 episode anime series adaptation. There is also an incredibly popular mobile version of the game. It stands out on this list for being more martial arts focused with classes like Kung Fu Master, Zen Archer, and Blade Master. If you’re looking for a completely unfamiliar MMORPG experience then give Blade & Soul a try.

Elder Scrolls Online

Despite its rough launch Elder Scrolls Online has gone on to become one of the most successful and most popular MMORPGs on the market right now. It is without a doubt one of the top 3 MMORPGs you can play right now. It is full of content that is accessible to both groups and solo players alike. It is still getting regular content updates with new expansions and DLC. For those familiar with Tamriel and the Elder Scrolls universe, the game takes place a millennium before Skyrim, 800 years before the events of Morrowind and Oblivion. If you’re looking for an MMORPG that is guaranteed to still have a long life ahead of itself then ESO may be the game for you. In a recent panel at PAX Australia ESO’s Creative Director said that Zenimax is planning to continue to support the game for a long time and that they have development plans through 2020 and beyond.

When it launched Rift was aiming to be a WoW killer and they weren’t shy about it with their advertising either. It is perhaps the most World of Warcraft like MMORPG that’s on the market without being a Chinese clone. Unfortunately it has had its share of struggles through the years and it has been relatively quiet since Gamigo bought it and developer Trion Worlds in October 2018. However, the core game and its expansions do still exist and it is all extremely playable. The playerbase may not be what it once was, but for a game that is 8 years old and has moved on to an entirely new developer it is still going strong.

Blade & Soul Pushes Back its Class Specialization Feature

Feedback is important, so long as that feedback isn’t the text-based equivalent of banshees shrieking in a gale. It’s that feedback that has changed plans for the Blade & Soul December update…or at the very least, one specific feature of the update: class specializations.

blade & soul december update

According to a letter from producer Jonathan Lien, reactions from players regarding the class specialization feature that was introduced in the Korean version of the game started some internal discussion. As a result of this meeting, the team has decided that the upcoming December patch will not launch with these new class spec functions.

“We ultimately felt the best decision for our players was to wait and delay the release of the class specialization update, which will allow us to include additional balance changes and adjustments made over the coming months when we release that content,” writes Lien.

Despite this feature getting shed for the time being, the December update will still have plenty to do with another round of dungeons, system updates, new legendary equipment and some quality-of-life changes. There will also be an upcoming opportunity for players to sign up for a free December gift pack, which will likely be detailed soon.

Our Thoughts

It’s a shame this feature had to be pushed back, but we have to applaud the BnS team for making the choice to do so. Here’s hoping that these balance changes aren’t too much like homogenization, though — we know this game has an esports presence and it’d be a shame if those considerations took precedence over making the class specs distinct and fun.

Warden’s Fury is Unleashed in Blade & Soul

The time has come to live out your best big-ass sword swinging fantasies. Blade & Soul has kicked out the Warden’s Fury patch today, bringing the titular new class, new story and some fresh dungeons to delve into.

warden's fury patch

In addition to the new Warden class, which is able to either dish out massive hurting or defend allies depending on which skill tree you follow, the Warden’s Fury patch also introduces Act 9 of the game’s narrative. In this new chapter, players will be reunited with a familiar face and uncover a mystery that could mean war for the realm.

The update also has the new six-player Heroic dungeon The Shadowmoor, a legendary pirate ship that has suddenly arisen from the depths, crewed by ghouls and their undead pirate captain. There’s also a large swath of updates to existing content, such as adjusted enrage timers for several dungeon and raid bosses, reduced upgrade costs for weapons, and a rather long list of class changes.

You can get all of the pertinent details in the patch notes and check out the update’s more flashy details in the video embed.

Our Thoughts

Maybe it’s our inner altoholic talking, but we are definitely intrigued by the Warden. Personally speaking, any class that (presumably) lets you tank things by crashing a huge sword into them has my interest. We hope players of BnS enjoy the new update!

Blade & Soul Provides a Brief Look at the Warden

The Warden’s Fury update to Blade & Soul is bringing more than a few things to the action MMO, but certainly chief among those features is the new Warden class. If you’re curious about just what this new arrival is capable of, then the devs have offered a quick primer.

warden's fury update

As you can (sort of?) see in the image above, the Warden hefts around an enormous greatsword to lay into their enemies, tanking foes purely through aggression than traditional sword-and-shield tactics. Despite their vicious appearance, the class has some defensive capabilities, namely in the form of Resilience – a regenerating shield that takes damage before the Warden’s HP does.

The Warden has a couple of Stances based on the tree one follows. Lightning Wardens build a resource known as Blood Rage that allows them to enter Frenzy Stance, where the Warden can use their own health pools to power new attacks. Frost Wardens, meanwhile, must build up to three Sunsparks to enter Sentry Stance and use various attacks while also getting heightened defense and movement speed.

Regardless of which path you take up, Wardens will also have access to a skill known as Soul Flare, which regenerates the Warden’s health, ramps up their critical damage, and unlocks skills for both the Warden and their allies.

Of course, the Warden’s Fury update is going to do more than bring someone swishing a huge sword about, with plans for further reduction of Legendary Weapon upgrade costs, cleanup of older crafting recipes, and a new instance. All of those details are found here.

Our Thoughts

It can often feel like a pretty long walk from level 1 to current content in Blade & Soul, but the Warden class sounds like it has enough interesting tools to make the journey worthwhile, particularly for those who like to tank.

False Idols Update of Blade & Soul Goes Live

It’s another update to Blade & Soul, and this one has robot-smashing raid goodness, some extra benefits to those who have Premium Membership among other goodies. It’s the False Idols update and it’s now live in the kung-fu action MMO.

false idols update

The headline feature of False Idols is the addition of two new 12-player raids in the form of the Hall of the Keeper and Hall of the Templar. Both require level 55/HM 12 and task players with taking down the Barrier Keeper and Templar automatons from wreaking havoc.

The update also brings new benefits for Premium Members online, including a 20% discount on Chromatic Thread, improvements to the game’s login rewards, and free character alteration vouchers with 90 and 365 day Premium Memberships.

The new update also has a number of changes to several of the game’s systems including Battlegrounds, daily and weekly challenge rewards and more. Sub-sections detailing all of these new adjustments and the full patch notes can be found here.

Our Thoughts

Like clockwork. Eh? Get it? Get it? Anyway, we’re hoping that the new raids added to Blade & Soul provide both an ample level of challenge and reward to those who like to play this MMO’s top tier of content. We wish those chasing clears the best of luck.

The Celestial Dawn Rises in Blade & Soul

Today marks another piece of content update goodness for Blade & Soul players in the form of the Celestial Dawn update, which is bringing another new round of encounters, events and items for fans of the kung fu-styled action MMO.

celestial dawn update

The Celestial Dawn’s instanced content this time around comes in the form of part two of the Nightfall Sanctuary and the Circle of Sundering. In Nightfall Sanctuary 2, players must put an end to the machinations of Chol Mugo once and for all in the conclusion of his story arc; and in the Circle of Sundering, solo players will need to face off with visions of people from their past…including your long-slain master Hong.

The update is also bringing a new augment system to Legendary accessories that works similarly to improving your Soul Shield, along with changes to several reward systems and changes to crafting among other things. You can take in the full patch notes on the website as well as get a sniff at what’s new in the video below.

Our Thoughts

Well, guess it was only a matter of time before we had to punch Master Hong. We have to spare a moment to nod in approval at the update cadence that Blade & Soul is keeping up. We’ll also, as ever, hope fans of this game enjoy all of the new stuff arriving today.

Blade & Soul Maps Out 2018 Updates and Shows Off a New Class

A new Blade & Soul producer’s letter has been penned and it’s full of information about the current and future development of the action MMO. Among the details in the letter are a reveal of an upcoming class, new instances and updates to existing systems.

blade & soul producer's letter

We’ll get the big one out of the way first: pictured above is the new class, which doesn’t quite have a name yet but is described as a tank character that uses both the power of their greatsword and the expense of their own HP to dish out pain. Naturally, as a tank class, it can also unleash skills that mitigate damage and gain temporary immunity to status effects.

In addition to the new class, players can look forward to Act 9 of the primary story, new solo and six-player Heroic dungeons, an upcoming feature to upgrade your Legendary equipment, and a variety of other features. There was even word of the Unreal Engine 4 upgrade, which should be expected sometime next year.

In the more immediate future, the letter also brought word of efforts to further enhance the game’s existing Premium membership as well as work on 6v6 issues and bugs that continue to hamper players. You can read up on what’s now and next in the full letter here.

Our Thoughts

That’s a pretty sword! More than that, though, this new class sounds like an interesting addition to the Blade & Soul roster. Here’s to more in 2018!

Blade & Soul Shows Off Updates to Unreal Engine 4

Admittedly, Blade & Soul is an already very pretty game presentation-wise, but that’s not quite good enough for the devs, apparently. NCSoft has decided on a Blade & Soul Unreal Engine 4 upgrade and has shown off some before-and-after shots to showcase the difference.

blade & soul unreal engine 4

Naturally, the update from UE3 to UE4 will introduce some more dramatic graphical effects to make the Earthen Realm pop, with physically based rendering (or PBR) being put to heavy use. These efforts are part of a video showcase known as a “Vision Preview” which also offered some intriguing looks at Mushin the Divine Fist, hints at more community-focused gathering and fishing, and some concept art of the mysterious Divine Realm.

The only thing this Vision Preview didn’t offer is a timeline for when these updates arrive, so these upgrades could take a span of months or years to go live in Korea and perhaps longer still for a Western release.

On the subject of Blade & Soul updates, the Western version of the MMO has unleashed the Eternal Night update, which brings with it the first part of the Nightfall Sanctuary raid, the Heroic Sandstone Temple six-player dungeon, and a bunch of different items and in-game events.

Information on what’s currently available to Blade & Soul players can be found on the official site, while the Vision Preview video can be seen below.

Our Thoughts

Seriously, we didn’t really find Blade & Soul to be lacking in the graphics department, but seeing these upgrades really do look like a night and day difference. About the only thing that sucks about these updates is the presumed length of time it will take, but we can be patient in the meantime and look forward to new content updates until then.

Battle a Robot Run Amok in Blade & Soul’s Automaton Assault Event

What happens when a very purple robot loses control and becomes a whirring, projectile-shooting torrent of death? Players of Blade & Soul are about to find out with the launch of the Automaton Assault event dungeon. Though with a name like “Princess Bloodlust”, we really shouldn’t be surprised at the robot’s fate.

automaton assault event dungeon

Yes, the robot pictured above is the problem creation in question and its name is literally Princess Bloodlust. A creation of the genius engineer Hongsil, Princess Bloodlust is the subject of the limited-time event dungeon which will ask players to take down the creation before it can do more damage…or worse.

Successfully taking down the pretty little hate machine will reward players with an Automaton Assault Chest, which has guaranteed elements and Fortune Potions and a chance at a variety of items such as Charms, Crystal bundles, and a Princess Cannonball among other trinkets. If you do get your hands on a Princess Cannonball, you can take it to the Cannon of Fate in Jadestone Village to fire, which will reward several additional rewards. There’s also Shop Gear currency that can be earned and traded in for more goodies.

On top of all that, there will also be a Spring’s Special outfit bundle transmutation event that will reward a selection of cosmetic rewards at the cost of some Shop Gears, High Quality Fabrics and Gold. Better still, if you’re not a fan of the cosmetic you earn, you can simply salvage the item at the cost of another 15 Shop Gears and try again.

Automaton Assault runs between Wednesday, April 11th and Wednesday, May 2nd, while the redemption period for rewards and other associated events runs between April 11th and Wednesday, June 20th. All of the details, including what rewards you can earn, are available here.

Our Thoughts

Just one time, we’d love it if a machine that sports guns and artificial intelligence in fiction doesn’t suddenly go haywire and try to kill everything within range. That’d be really neat. Especially when the robot in question is such a pretty purple thing.
