2018 MMO Halloween Event List

The month of Halloween is upon us which means it is time for the MMO Halloween Event List to come out for another year. Below you’ll find a list of all the Halloween events happening in the MMO/online gaming sphere. More will be added all the time leading up to Halloween so be sure to check back regularly.

Black Desert Online         Cookie Day          Oct 11-24

Make event chocolate cookies and get some awesome rewards in return. This event isn’t exactly Halloween themed, but we’re including it anyway as right now it’s the closest thing to Halloween BDO has announced. They’re also running the fast season event which means that it is spring right now, Saturday it will be Summer, Sunday it will be Fall, and, you guessed it Winter will hit on Monday. This all happens the Oct. 11 to Oct. 15th.

Blade & Soul       Blade & Ghoul   Oct 17- Nov 7

The veil to the Dark Realm is wavering and ghosts and ghouls are seeping into our realm. Which means that it is time to start fighting back these gruesome foes in return for some fun prizes. There will also be a 50% experience boost in effect during the event. Giving you even more incentive to take part. The enemies at Zaiwei Ruins are intended for players who are level 50 only. But, don’t worry if you haven’t reached 50 yet, you’ll still be able to take part in daily quests, challenges, and take on bosses.

Bless Online       Halloween Event              Dates Unknown

Bless Online may not be launching until October 23rd, when it will be free to play, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t getting in on the Halloween event action right now. If you’re already playing Bless Online you can take part in the Halloween Event which includes themed quests, costumes, and of course rewards. There are two events which together make up the larger Halloween festivities. The Jack-O’ – Lantern event and the Witch Raven event.

Champions Online           Bloodmoon Rises              Oct 11 – ???

Champions Online is bringing back Bloodmoon Rises, their annual Halloween event. This year the event is the same as last year except with new rewards and items.

DC Universe Online         The Witching Hour           Oct 1- 31

Throughout October DCUO players will be able to take part in the Midnight Masquerade seasonal alert which will bring them to Gotham City where Klarion the Witch Boy is up to no good once again. This year’s event introduces 4 new feats for players to acquire. Plus, taking part in the seasonal events will earn you Spooky Bites which can be spent on all sorts of items.

Elder Scrolls Online         Witch’s Festival                 Oct 18 – Nov 1

The Elder Scrolls Online’s Witch’s Festival will have you turning yourself into an undead monster, enjoying a 100% XP buff, and grabbing up all sorts of ghoulish goodies. Plunder Skulls will drop from all Boss Monsters with a variety of themed loot. New this year they’ve also added Dremora Plunder Skulls which will drop from the first of each type of boss you defeat each day. Witch’s Festival will also be your first chance to get Event Tickets. Get 10 Event Tickets and take them to The Impresario to get your first Indrik Feather for a very special mount. There will also be new items in the Crown Store for you to purchase, including the coveted Coven Cottage.

Everquest II        Nights of the Dead           Now – Nov 1

For the first time, players on Fallen Gate will get to join in the Nights of the Dead festivities in Everquest II. There’s a new collection to tackle, new items for crafters, and new merchant items to grab. From the looks of it, the event won’t have anything new to do this year though.

Final Fantasy XIV              All Saints’ Wake                Oct 18 – Nov 1

The Continental Circus is back once again and this year there’s a new masquerade for players to experience. Players who have reached level 15 and completed the quest “It’s Probably Pirates” will be able to take part in the Adventurer’s Guild Investigator’s quest to take a deeper look into the happenings around the circus. In return for your help, you’ll be able to get your hands on new minions and new items.

Guild Wars 2       Shadow of the Mad King               Oct 16 – Nov 6

Halloween in Guild Wars 2 this year is going to be quite exciting! Along with the usual suspects, the Mad King’s Labyrinth, the Clock Tower jumping puzzle, and the fun in Lion’s Arch players have a few new things to look forward to. This year sees the return of the PvP Reaper’s Rumble for the first time since the first Halloween event in GW2 back in 2012. Mad King’s Raceway is an all-new addition that showcases the newest mount, the Roller Beetle. And there are three new weapons for you to get your hands on. Players who have completed Episode 3 of Season 4 will also be able to dive into the long-standing rivalry between Mad King Thorn and Palawa Joko in a new collection achievement.

Overwatch          Halloween Terror 2018                   Oct 9 – 31

Dr. Junkenstein’s minions are back once again along with Junkenstein’s Revenge (Classic) and Junkenstein’s Revenge: Endless Night. Players will be able to pick from 10 playable heroes this year, including Tracer and Brigitte who are both new this year.

Paragon Chat (City of Heroes Emu)           Halloween          Oct 5- Oct 31

Paragon Chat may not be exactly what City of Heroes once was but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun! Go trick or treating with fellow players and head to the Halloween Party on October 20th. Head over to Croatoa between 12 and 6 PM Pacific, 3 PM to 9 PM Eastern for a game of hide and seek, Costumes, and games. For an extra jolt of nostalgia, music will be provided by The Cape.

Pirate 101            Halloween Items              Ends Nov 4

When you’re a pirate every day is Halloween…or at least you dress up every day. Pirate 101 isn’t holding any event but you will be able to get your hands on a number of Halloween themed mounts including the brand new Cloudstrider mount.

Tera       Harvest Festival                Oct 2 – Nov 1

The Halloween Harvest Festival event in Tera is back once again. Head over to the Eldritch Academy where you’ll be able to fight back waves of monsters with a cannon. You’ll be rewarded with Halloween candy for your efforts which can be turned in for mounts, pets, costumes, and more.

Wizard 101          Halloween Items              Ends Nov 4

Just like Pirate 101, Wizard 101 is breaking out the Halloween items in the form of seasonal packs. New this year is the Elven Nightmare Pack which includes things like the Hart of Darkness and Light Hart mounts, pets, Elven Nightmare weapons and armor, and more.

Cat Rescues and Cake Mark Champions Online’s Ninth Anniversary

While many mourn the death of City of Heroes or otherwise wait for any number of legacy projects to form into an actually playable game, Champions Online has been rolling on for nine years now, and the devs are ready to celebrate the Champions Online ninth anniversary in the most obvious way possible: rescuing cats from trees.

champions online ninth anniversary

Yes, the ninth anniversary of Champions Online will let the heroes of Millenium City do the most heroic thing they possibly can by rescuing cats that have found themselves stuck in trees around the map. If players rescue enough kitty friends, they’ll receive access to new feline pets each week.

If rescuing cats isn’t somehow your thing (you monster), then there’s also going to be a humongous in-game cake in the center of town, which marks the spot for a dance party players can have fun in. There will also be regular challenges for players to tackle.

The party runs all month long from now until September 27th. Further details are expected to be shared on the game’s website starting next week, but initial details can be found here for the time being.

Our Thoughts

Nine lives, nine years…get it? Hah! Puns. We would like to congratulate the folks at Champions Online for a nine year run. Honestly, we were surprised at the length of time this particular superheroic MMO has been running, but clearly it has its fans and we hope those fans enjoy the in-game celebration. And we also hope they save all the cats.

MMO Money: Champions Online Subscription Controversy and GTA V on the Decline

GTA V on the decline as the game is starting to show its age. Meanwhile, Fortnite is continuing to smash records as it is shown that Battle Royale players are more invested in their games than other gamers. Star Citizen made the news for a $27,000 ship pack, and we got the latest game charts from Superdata.

Champions Online Creates Controversy with Subscription Changes

Champions Online Nightmare Invasion Event

You don’t usually hear much about Champions Online in the news. The game is silently carrying on as it always has. But on June 1st the game found itself in a bit of a controversy over announced changes to subscriptions. In fact, it was going to drop subscriptions altogether. While there were some fears that this was signaling the beginning of the end for Champions Online that actually wasn’t what had fans up in arms. The new premium pack that was going to replace subscriptions had one thing, that fans are massive fans of missing, Freeform character slots. Fans were so vocal about their displeasure that Cryptic has delayed the changes to address the issue.

Bless Online Launch Disaster

In case you’ve been living under a rock, you may not have heard that Bless Online had a disaster of a launch. Endgame content was missing, features you’d only see in bad mobile games were there…it was and still is a mess. If you want to learn more about Bless, its messy launch and why you really shouldn’t be surprised by it check out the article I did on the history of Bless Online. But right now you might be asking, why is this in the business column? Well, that’s because Steam was giving back refunds past their usual limits. So the bad launch is also hurting Neowiz’s bank account.

Funcom Q1 Report

Funcom has had one of its best quarters in a very long time thanks to the sales of Conan Exiles, which they also pointed out is now officially Funcom’s best selling game of all time. Secret World Legends didn’t get much of a mention, just a promise of more content and events. They also reminded everyone that they are working on a new game, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, which is due out in the second half of this year.

Star Citizen Offers Ship Pack Worth $27,000

star citizen like eve online

Once again, if you’ve been living under a rock you may have missed Star Citizen releasing a ship pack that they’re selling for $27,000. Even worse, to see what the pack offered you had to have already spent $1000. Did anyone buy one? The world may never know. What we do know is that a lot of people had something to say about it. In their defense, Star Citizen claimed that this pack was requested by players. If you’re curious what you could have bought instead here’s an article we did right after the news broke.

PUBG Sues Fortnite

The battle royale of the Battle Royale games has taken a bit of a nasty turn as PUBG has sued Fortnite developers Epic Games. The lawsuit, which is taking place in Korea, states that Epic Games plagiarized PUBG’s interface and in-game items. Many fans see this as a low blow from PUBG Corp as well as an attempted money grab and an attempt to keep Fortnite out of the Korean marketplace. It will be interesting to watch how things progress in this case while Fortnite continues to dominate gaming.

Battle Royale Gamers More Likely to Spend

Data from Newzoo shows that Battle Royale players tend to spend more money on games than other gamers. They’re also more engaged than those who play other core competitive games like CoD, CSGO, Overwatch, LoL…and so on. 88% of Battle Royale players are likely to spend money on games vs 75% in these other competitive games. Also, more than 80% of Battle Royale players watch live streams of game content. It’s 67% for competitive games.

From the report, we’ve also learned that Fortnite appeals to a younger, more casual audience vs PUBG. PUBG players are more likely to identify themselves as core gamers.

Superdata April Report on the Gaming Industry

GTA V on the Decline

Fortnite is continuing to break records for yet another month. But the real story from Superdata for April is that GTA V is finally starting to show its age. In fact, GTA V Online has been declining every month so far in 2018. This is most likely due to the popularity of Fortnite and the lack of new content from Rockstar. Meanwhile on mobile Honour of Kings brought in $185 million in revenue in April. In comparison, Fortnite made $296 million on console, PC, and mobile in that same time period.

Tencent Gets Majority Stake in Path of Exile Creator

Tencent continues its domination of the gaming world by getting a majority stake in Path of Exile’s creator Grinding Gear Games. In the announcement, they quickly tackled any concerns that this would mean the game would be changing by saying that the studio would remain independent.

Lootbox Roundup

Talk about lootboxes seems to have calmed down some in the last couple of weeks, but that doesn’t mean that there’s nothing to talk about. The first news is that Webzen has decided to pull Mu Origin out of the Netherlands over lootboxes. The game will no longer be playable in the country as of June 20th. In the announcement, Webzen directly stated that this was in response to the recent decision from The Netherlands Gaming Authority against in-game lootboxes.

EA has also taken a bit of a stance against lootboxes, at least in Battlefield V which they’ve promised won’t have them. They also said the game won’t have premium passes. What they haven’t said however is what will be replacing both of those things in their business model.

Finally, GamesIndustry.biz put out a fantastic article on some things the president of the ESA said recently about lootboxes. In a speech at the Nordic Game Conference, he compared the lootbox controversy to the WHO’s gaming disorder crusade and the US government’s attempts to link video games and violence. He also spoke out against government regulation, effectively saying that the government couldn’t possibly understand well enough to have input. It’s an interesting article if you’re invested in the lootbox controversy.

Why Aren’t Superhero MMOs Hugely Successful?

A few days ago a friend of mine on Facebook asked a question. It just so happens that this is something I’ve considered before and have been meaning to write for some time. Why is it that while superheroes are dominating television, movies, and comics that they seem to have such a hard time when it comes to games? Of course, when it comes to single player games, they’re actually doing really well. You’ve got the Batman Arkham series which have been one great game after another. The problem is with making them larger scale, making them MMOs.

Please keep in mind that everything stated below is purely based on my personal opinion and does not represent the views of MMOGames as a whole. In fact, I’m pretty sure there are a few people who would disagree with me entirely. I encourage anyone who disagrees to step into the comments. Fight me, bro.

City of Heroes Screenshots fight - Why Aren't Superhero MMOs Hugely Successful
I think one of the reasons is that all player characters in all games are heroes in their world. They don’t go around in spandex but they are doing superheroic things, and this goes for MMOs and non-MMOs. Link in Zelda games, he’s a superhero. Your characters in WoW, superheroes. Your characters in Guild Wars 2…actually a bad example. I’m pretty convinced we’re the villains of that story. Anyway, the setting is what changes the game from a fantasy game to a superhero game and ultimately, the modern world isn’t as fun to play in.

If you want to look just at online gaming… MMORPGs are a dying genre. They made the genre all about making the next WoW and when it didn’t work they moved on. They’re expensive to make and a massive gamble. So studios are leaning more towards games that are less of a risk.

Looking at the Superhero MMOs we’ve had and currently have:

City of Heroes: Financially speaking they were making money when they shut down. It wasn’t a massive amount, but it kept the lights on, kept families fed, and made NCSoft money. The truth of why it shut down will almost certainly never come out but I doubt very much that it was just one thing. It also shut down right at the start of the massive rise in superhero popularity. It makes you wonder how the game would have done in the current climate.

Champions Online: Still alive and kicking. I’ve always had the impression that Perfect World wasn’t interested in Champions and in fact, Cryptic made it because it was a pet project to show off what their engine could do (just my personal theory). They’ve gone on to use the same engine in Star Trek Online and Neverwinter, which are games they give a whole lot more attention to in terms of development and advertisement. Despite this, Champions does have a core dedicated audience who have stuck with the game.

Champions Online

DC Universe Online: I feel like this one gets forgotten a lot and I think the reason for that is that it is most successful as a console game, so traditional MMO players who would be on PC may not always consider it. Outside of MMO specific sites, the game doesn’t get any attention and the game is never advertised. One way they could improve this is working out a way to tie the game into what’s currently happening in the movie/tv/comic worlds, like what Marvel Heroes did.

Marvel Heroes: Shut down late last year very suddenly. Again, this wasn’t about money. They had just launched on consoles and were doing very well, the problem was that Disney pulled their license. Why did this happen? It may have had something to do with the sexual misconduct charges in the studio, but again this is one of those things where the world may never know for sure. Marvel Heroes was a great game for a certain type of gamer and it feels to me like people who would traditionally play MMORPGs weren’t that type.

The Superhero is ascendant right now but they’re all the big name ones. When was the last /new/ superhero trialed on screens? Have there been any?

DC Universe Online Why Aren't Superhero MMOs Hugely Successful

So while we have superheroes coming out of our ears, the question is if people want to play in those worlds or as those people.

“As those people” becomes hard, and is better off left to the single player genre… but get-it-out-the-door licensed superhero games are usually a travesty. The Arkham games for Batman are held up as fantastic, but they weren’t trying to support a show or movie. Most people will greenlight a project when a show or movie is there to get the tie-in dollars.

“In those worlds” is a little easier and three out four of the games mentioned above had/have you in superheroic worlds but not as the popular characters.

Why Aren't Superhero MMOs Hugely Successful - Marvel Heroes

Both DC and Marvel had an “MMO” out and neither were exactly setting the world on fire. Creating unique worlds like City of Heroes and Champions is a gamble and City of Heroes got in there just before/around WoW, instead of chasing the WoW mantle. Champions drew mostly from CoH fans. There’s no guarantee of success but plenty of opportunities for failure.

To be perfectly honest, I’m surprised no one has taken SMITE and redone it for Marvel or DC. Did the MOBA bubble burst too quickly for this to happen? Despite the MOBA bubble bursting, I think it could have done really well and maybe it isn’t too late for the idea. Of course, in the dream version of this game, you would have Marvel vs DC because…why wouldn’t you want to see that?

I guess, ultimately the reason superheroes aren’t thriving in gaming the way it seems like they should be is a complicated mix of things. I do think that if City of Heroes was still around it could have gone into a golden age with a new player base as more and more people are drawn into the superhero genre. This ultimately could have taken the game to all new heights. Who knows, we may have even had a City of Heroes movie at some point. Ah, the things that could have been.

Best MMO Halloween Event 2017

If there is one event MMOs love to take part in more than any others it is Halloween. That is why in this list you’ll find 60 different games with Halloween events! We decided to leave out the MOBAs and Shooters from this list but if they were put back in it would easily have a hundred games in it. But which is the best MMO Halloween event?

This poll is all about finding out what your favorite MMO Halloween event is this year. The winner gets a badge on their MMOGames profile and bragging rights for the entire year.

If your favorite isn’t on the list, or you know of a game we missed let us know in the comments and we’ll be sure to add it as quickly as possible.

MMO Halloween

To take part just find your favorite MMO in the list below and leave a vote. You can only vote for one game at a time, but be sure to keep coming back as you can place more votes every day.

Voting will continue until the end of October 31st when the top three winners will be declared.
