Closers Introduces its Latest Character Soma

The tonfa is a melee weapon that is believed to have originated in China and was used extensively with martial arts forms that came from Okinawa, Japan. They are blunt objects, usually measuring about 15-20 inches in length and wielded in pairs. Don’t let any of that distract you from the new Closers Soma trailer showing the new character’s hyper-tech bladed tonfas, though.

closers soma trailer

Soma is the latest member of the Wildhüter team, described as a tonfa-wielding demolisher that harbors a deep hatred for dimensional monsters. The use of her tonfas allows her to lash out with lighting-fast combinations and heavy-hitting attacks.

As is often the case with a new character to Closers, there’s a new event alongside Soma’s release. Between now and Tuesday, November 6th those who get a Soma character to level 20 net themselves 500 EMP. There’s also leveling goodies for Soma to get and 20 days’ worth of login rewards to mark the MMO’s closed beta anniversary.

In addition to Soma’s arrival, the folks at Closers have seen fit to set up yet another Gleam giveaway. From October 30th until November 13th, players who tick off a number of activities can be entered to once again win a Razer Blade 15 laptop for the grand prize as well as a 2nd place prize of 15,000 EMP.

Our Thoughts

Yep, she’s another quick and flashy character. We do have to wonder at what point players of Closers stop getting invested in seeing new arrivals to the game’s roster and whether they’d like to see more content pursuits instead. Do you feel that way? Let us know in the comments.

Closers Celebrates Autumn with Items and a Giveaway

The spooking season continues across multiple games and Closers is certainly no exception. The side-scrolling action MMO is dressing up the game and its characters with the arrival of its Closers autumn event, and is even giving away a prize in a new giveaway.

closers autumn

In-game, players can take on bosses and enemies in a special Halloween stage to earn Jack-o-Lanterns, which can then be used to craft a variety of thematic cosmetics. Access to this special stage is open twice a day to Elite Members or once a day to free players.

IRL, there’s a pretty simple Gleam giveaway that only asks you to play Closers for at least two hours on Steam. The prize: a Razer Blade 15 gaming laptop, while five runners-up will receive an in-game Meister Bundle valued at $150. This giveaway runs until October 29th.

Finally, the announcement wrapped up with confirmation of the game’s next roster addition, SOMA. This new character wields a pair of tonfas to take down foes with what’s described as some heavy-hitting attacks.

Details about the autumn event can be found here or you can check out the trailer below.

Our Thoughts

Well, of course they were going to dress up their characters for Halloween. Honestly, it’d be weird if Closers didn’t have some sort of event like this. We hope that the grind for these cosmetics isn’t too aggravating and wish anyone entering the contest the best of luck.

Closers is Getting Another New Character and German Language Support

Closers sure does like its roster additions. The side-scrolling anime brawler MMO will once more be adding to its character list with the arrival of the new Closer Wolfgang, along with German language support for players in the country.

new closer wolfgang

Wolfgang is a member of the new Wildhüter Closers team and wields a weapon called the Black Book, which he uses to unleash powerful dark magics and dimensional monsters on his foes. He also wears a pretty spiffing coat while doing it.

The new German character coincides rather nicely with the MMO’s German language support, which will also be launching as a test pilot for players in the region. This test pilot will have most of the core aspects of the game translated and will be discussed in the coming weeks.

Players will have to wait until Tuesday, August 28th to use this new character, but until then you can watch Wolfgang wield words as weapons in the trailer below.

Our Thoughts

I wish I was born with silvery hair… On point, this new character looks like yet another stylish addition to an admittedly stylish roster of characters, though we wonder if there won”t be more arriving to Closers in terms of content soon. We suspect that fans of this title would probably like to have more to do with their existing characters instead of playing the entire game over with a new character, but we could certainly be wrong in that assumption.

The Season of Wolves Arrives to Closers

If you’re hearing howling on the winds of a cold forest, it’s not just a fevered dream begging for autumn and Halloween because summer is the worst, it’s the arrival the Closers Season of Wolves update, which introduces features that were promised earlier.

closers season of wolves

The Season of Wolves update completes the Wolf Dogs roster with the addition of the greatsword-swishing fancy gal Violet, who pairs her massive weapon attacks with Phase Force abilities in a quest to take out invading forces and maybe discover her father’s killer.

The new update also marks the death of Fatigue as mentioned before, killing off the system and offering a wealth of ways for players who have Fatigue-recovering items to turn them in for several new items. There’s even going to be a Fatigue Removal Celebration granting players who log in between now and July 19th rewards like a Slot Type Modification Tool and a 7-Day VIP Voucher.

The update is also bringing a level 80 cap with related raid content, enhancements to the game’s UI, and improvements to the action MMO’s early pacing. More details can be found here and a suitably stylish trailer for the update is below.

Our Thoughts

Sounds like things for Closers players are improving in some pretty significant ways. Like we said before, any system that arbitrarily hamstrings people from playing content deserves to be taken out behind the wood shed. Good bye, Fatigue! Don’t ever come back!

Closers to Add Another Character and End Fatigue

It would seem, much like Black Desert Online, new content in Closers means another new character class to carve up baddies with. Not a complaint, necessarily, just an observation. However, in addition to the new Closer, the July Closers update will also see the game’s Fatigue system officially get the axe. And presumably that axe will be stylishly wielded by an 18 year old in a maid outfit using psychic powers.

july closers update

For those unfamiliar, Stamina – and by extension, Fatigue – was a system put in place to limit the number of times a player could enter a dungeon. Presumably, the limitation was put in place in order to prevent people from farming dungeons and thereby flooding the game’s Black Market auction house, but player feedback has made the devs of the anime brawler MMO rescind the system.

In an FAQ on the game’s site, the devs stated that existing entry restrictions for dungeons and previous testing of the fatigue system’s removal in Japan has helped them in preparation for this adjustment. Consequently, the team is still working out the best way to handle those with Fatigue restoring potions, leaning towards letting players trade them in for credits.

The July update will not only introduce the end of Fatigue but will also add the newest Wolf Dog, Violet, to the roster. Violet brings along a variety of powers to the game, including Phase Force abilities, a giant greatsword, and really fancy clothing.

All of the new content is coming to Closers on Tuesday, July 3rd. You can watch Violet fancily dispatch many, many enemies in the gameplay trailer below.

Our Thoughts

Okay, so yeah, Violet looks great and all, but we’re more excited to see the Fatigue system get removed. It sounds an awful lot like an arbitrary and obnoxious wall thrown up to bar players from being able to just enter dungeons as often as they want, so we’re glad the devs have decided to bin it.

Tina Joins the Closers Cast

The votes were tallied in the Tina vs. Harpy event and it turns out players would like to play as a ranged weapon-using robot inexplicably designed to look like a young girl. Yes, the new Closer Tina has now made her official debut to the side-scrolling action MMO starting today.

closer tina

Described as a combat cyborg with elite marksmanship skills and the ability to control Phase Power, Tina brings some long-range output to the Closers roster. Tina excels against airborne opponents and uses her powers to call in a huge assortment of different ranged weapons to blow away her targets.

To celebrate the new arrival, Closers is hosting another series of giveaways and limited events for players full of consumables and other stuff to earn. All of the details on these events can all be read about on the Closers website.

For those who were rooting for Harpy’s arrival, don’t fret: the card-slinging Closer is due to land to the game sometime in May. Meanwhile, you can take in Tina’s form of combat in the trailer below.

Our Thoughts

Brow-wrinkling character design choices notwithstanding, the form of assault that Tina is able to dish out looks like it’s both a fair bit of fun and useful to players of Closers in certain encounters. We hope that fans of the game like the new addition…or if they don’t, here’s hoping that Harpy will be more to everyone’s liking.

Players Can Choose the Next Closers Character In-Game

Sure, you could just have a community poll on a website to have players determine the next Closers character to be added to the action MMO…but that’s boring (probably)! To that point, Closers is introducing a new community event that will let players cast their vote between two different choices.

next closers character

The characters in question are Harpy, a character who wields kinetic explosive cards a la Gambit; or Tina, a marksman specialist battle robot.

Players of Closers can craft special Tina or Harpy Support Boxes by collecting Wolf Dog Cookies, which are earned through PvP wins, stage clears, or as a login reward. Each Support Box is equal to one vote for the character of your choice. Players can also craft 8-bit-styled masks of Tina or Harpy with their Cookies as a show of support for their favorite character.

In-game voting for Tina and Harpy will kick off Tuesday, March 6th and will wrap up on Wednesday, March 14th. The results of the votes will be revealed the following day, and the new character will be made playable to Closers on April 3rd. Some more information about the event and each of the two character choices can be found here.

Our Thoughts

Well, this definitely is one of the more unique and inventive ways of getting players to cast their vote for a new character. Both of the choices sound interesting, but we also don’t have the finger on the pulse of the Closers community, admittedly, so it’s entirely possible the votes will end up being a landslide. In either case, we kind of want Wolf Dog Cookies to be an actual, edible thing now.

Closers Releases its New Playable Character

Today’s update for Closers has something for people who like teenagers swinging chain blades around and sporting blue-green hair somehow. Nata, the newest addition to the roster of playable characters in Closers, is now available for the anime action MMO.

nata

A member of the rogue Closers group the Wolfdogs, Nata was drafted into service against his will and lashes out (literally) on enemies in the battlefield. Nata attacks with a pair of chained kukris that let him swipe and spin at multiple foes from a short distance.

Nata’s arrival is mentioned to be part of planned monthly updates to Closers, which will see free DLC updates as well as community events. The next such event lined up is a “Tina vs. Harpy” community contest, where players will get the opportunity to vote on the next arriving character. Details on that can be expected in the next few weeks.

In the meantime, you can learn more about Nata here, or watch a recent trailer with him in action below.

Our Thoughts

There’s just something about a smart-mouth cocky bastard that video game character designers love, isn’t there? In spite of that, Nata most definitely looks like he can dish out some very serious and very fast hurting, so we hope that Closers fans find a lot to love in this new character’s arrival.

Closers Charges Towards Final Launch with a Community Event

There’s only a week left until Closers makes its way to being an officially launched MMO brawler thing, so what better way to entice players to rally together than to offer sweet in-game and real-life prizes? The Closers Together event will challenge the MMO’s community to complete goals, earn points, and net said rewards.

closers together event

Closers Together is running from now until Wednesday, February 14th. Players will get a point daily for logging in to the game, successfully enhancing items, clearing stages, and winning PvP matches. These earned points will be tallied up globally to a running scoreboard. Once a rank’s goal is achieved, everyone will get access to a code for unique in-game rewards, with the first goal’s reward being three days of Elite Status.

But what about that “shiny prize” pictured above? Entries into the drawing for that custom Razer Blade Pro gaming laptop will only be granted to anyone who logs in every day of the event. So if you’re hungry for hardware, you’ll want to make sure you arrive in-game for the next couple of weeks.

The video below offers some more information about how Closers Together works, along with an advance look at Closers’ upcoming raid-level fight Tiamat. You can also read all about it here.

Our Thoughts

Shiny prize indeed. The achievements needed to earn points don’t sound insurmountable by any stretch, but those point totals needed to unlock each rank are pretty astonishingly high. Will players be up to the challenge? We’re curious to find out!

Newest Update for Closers Has a Sky Ship

You know your adventures are getting more serious when your base of operations is a flying ship. After all, its been a flagship moment for the Final Fantasy series. So the new Closer Sky Ship update should indicate important things for players of the action MMO.

closers sky ship update

The new update for Closers brings, as one would anticipate, a sky ship that will be part of the newest chapter in the Closers storyline. The new update will also increase the game’s level cap to 70 and introduce some new in-game events to help players climb the level ranks as well as a reward box for those that hit the new cap.

In addition to new missions and levels, the Sky Ship bridge area will also have unique crafting events where players can create unique cosmetic items. The crafting events will only run for a limited time, with crafting items only earnable until Monday, February 5th and the craft list only available until Monday, February 19th.

You can read the complete patch notes for the update on the Closers website and also watch the video below for more information.

Our Thoughts

This particular update to Closers isn’t exactly what many would consider to be earth-shattering, but it’s still nice to know that there’s new levels to earn and new missions to take on for fans of the game. We still have to wonder just what sort of look the player character pictured above and in the video was going for, though…
