Ascent: Infinite Realm Showcases PvP Combat from G-Star

G-Star has come and gone and with it a whole lot of new Ascent: Infinite Realm gameplay footage from the show floor. A new compilation video with footage captured from fans offers potential Western players a look at how one of the MMO’s touted PvP battles play out.

ascent: infinite realm gameplay

The battle in question appears to play out in three stages, with the first seeing players engage in a chaotic aerial battle, the second with players storming a breached gate, and a third with heavy mech suits airlifted in for an attack against a core.

While the footage, understandably, doesn’t provide much context for the battle, it does offer a reasonably good look at how gameplay operates. At one point during the aerial battle, the controlling player’s small craft is boarded by an enemy player, forcing them to abandon ship and spread their wings. The footage also appears to be taken from the attacking side of the conflict as the defending team appears to continually lose ground.

The official site has promised to share additional information and official translated details as A:IR moves into closed beta in Korea. While the devs are thanking fans for their enthusiasm, they do warn of fan translations that could have inaccuracies or miss crucial information. A timeline for when these updates will come was not provided.

In the meantime, you can whet your A:IR appetite by watching the gameplay footage compilation below.

Our Thoughts

Wow, does that look like a lot of fun! It also looks like the defending team wasn’t really able to effectively defend, which is either a result of poor coordination, imbalance, or maybe just spliced footage from multiple engagements. In either case, we’re most definitely eager to see more of Ascent: Infinite Realm.

7 MMO Developers to Watch at G-Star 2017

This weekend, the gaming world is gathering in Busan, South Korea, for G-Star 2017. With the decline in the MMO industry in the west, we are all looking to the east to carry us through. We’ve already had a few reveals at press events leading up to the convention, but what else might they have in store for us? Which game companies should you be keeping an eye out for? We’ll break it down in this week’s Listed.

NCSoft

We’re starting off the list with a studio that has already had quite an impressive pre-event. NCSoft revealed they’re working on Aion Tempest, Blade & Soul II, and Project TL. Two of these games are mobile and the third is a reworking of Lineage Eternal. There’s not any indication yet that Aion Tempest or Blade & Soul II will be released in the west. Mobile gaming doesn’t have the popularity in the west, so it could be very likely that they’re never released for us. Hopefully, there will be some indication during G-Star. Another possibility that we’re still holding out hope for is the release of Lineage M, a mobile port of the original Lineage. It’s already out in South Korea but there’s no sign of it being released globally yet. Editor’s Note: We now know that NCSoft will not be attending G-Star 2017.

Netmarble

Working along with NCSoft is Netmarble who has announced that it’s also working on a Blade & Soul mobile game. One title we would love to see is Aden, an open world mobile MMORPG that only released in South Korea earlier this year. But it seems pretty unlikely we’ll see Aden. Netmarble has announced that they’ll have Tera M, Icarus M, and the recently revealed Seven Knights II. All mobile games.

Bluehole/Kakao

Ascent: Infinite Realm

We’ve already seen an amazing trailer for the new upcoming steampunk MMORPG Ascent: Infinite Realm from Bluehole. We also know that it WILL be released in the west under the banner of Kakao. Bluehole is also the creator of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, which of course has had global success this year. Will it be at G-Star? Of course, they will. In fact, there is going to be an eSports invitational taking place during the convention.  Will there be anything else? If there is it’ll be mobile and possibly not released globally. They’ve already got some pretty big MMOs on their plate.

Nexon

Nexon is the main sponsor of G-Star this year and they’re bringing quite a few games with them. First, they’ll have FIFA Online 4, which had a lot of people really excited as it was teased as an MMO collaboration with EA. There will also be two more EA collaborations on display: Need for Speed EDGE and Titanfall Online. Nexon had teased Project B a few weeks ago, which was revealed to be Battlerite, a MOBA currently in early access. They’ll only be bringing one mobile game with them, which makes them stand out from the others. That game is Overhit, and there’s no sign of it being released in the west yet. Finally, they’ll have a PC MMORPG with them called Moonlight Blade. It was revealed last year, but we’re hoping for more information on it, including release information. Nexon has many other titles in the works but it would seem that they’re all still being developed.

KOG

The developers behind Grand Chase and Elsword have revealed they have a new online PC game at G-Star this year. It’s called KurtzPel and it is colorful. What we know so far is that there is character customization and PvP. There will be a demo playable at G-Star, so hopefully, more information will come our way.

Gravity

The makers of Ragnarok Online will be attending G-Star 2017 with a few different titles available. According to gamebase.com.tw and through the power of Google Translate (so take these names with a grain of salt) they are Ro Ragnarok Legend: Legendary Eternal Love, Miriam Mirror, Miracle Pororo, RO Wonderland Legend Zero, Ragnarok Clicker. It seems very unlikely at the moment that they’ll be released in the west but we here at MMOGames are always optimistic.

ChangYou

Last week ChangYou announced Project Z Online and God Slayer Online. Project Z Online will use tab targeting and forgo gender-locks, which are all too common in games from that part of the world. God Slayer has been around for a long time in beta but apparently, ChangYou will have it at G-Star 2017 as well.

It looks like that’s everything that has been announced. There are of course a few titles we would like to see there, including Lost Ark which we have been waiting years to see. We would also love to see Dark and Light on display there but there hasn’t been any indication yet that it will be there.

Right now, making MMOs is considered risky busy. There aren’t really any AAA western MMORPGs in the pipelines so we have to look at the east to bring us these games. Unfortunately for PC gamers, it seems that mobile is taking over as the next big trend. For now, at least we have a few fantastic looking games coming in the future. It does leave us wondering if this trend will continue in the west, however. Will E3 2018 be dominated by mobile games? Only time will tell.

MMO Alpha and Beta List: November 10, 2017

Things had been pretty slow for a while but this week more than made up for it! So many new titles have been announced ahead of G-Star next week.

First though, we say goodbye to PvP action game Battlerite which has launched. We’ve also taken MU Legend off the list since it is now in Open Beta testing, which is more like a soft launch.

Closers has made the move to Closed Beta. It will run from November 7th to December 5th and if you’d like to take part you’ll want to pick up a Founder’s Pack.

OrbusVR will be having a headstart Early Access starting on December 13th. There will be no further wipes or rollbacks made, so it is effectively a soft launch.

With all of that out of the way, we can dive into the newly announced games.

Niantic, the people who made Ingress and Pokemon Go, have announced they’re working on a Harry Potter mobile MMOARG similar to Pokemon Go. It’s being called Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and you can sign up for the beta now on the official site.

Netmarble revealed they’re working on a mobile MMO in the Blade & Soul universe. This one is called Blade & Soul Revolution and shouldn’t be confused with NCSoft’s Blade & Soul 2, which was also announced this week and is also a mobile game.

That wasn’t all NCSoft announced on their Media Day this week. They also revealed they’re working on an Aion prequel called Aion Tempest which is, as you may have guessed…a mobile game. We are starting to see a pattern here.

Meanwhile, ChangYou has teased a few titles ahead of G-Star. They’ve got God Slayer Online, which has previously been in beta testing but things went quiet on. They’ve also announced an MMORPG called Project Z Online. All we know about it so far is that classes won’t be gender locked and it uses classic tab targeting.

Finally, there is Bluehole and Kakao’s Project W, which we now know is called Ascent: Infinite Realm or A:IR for short. The trailer for the game looks AMAZING, you can find it lower down in this article. Expect to see the first closed beta for this title in the first half of 2018.

Pretty amazing week, right!? The hype for G-Star is alive and well at MMOGames. We’ll be reporting on the event as it happens next week from November 16th to the 19th.

As always you can see everything mentioned above and so much more in the list below. Just keep an eye out for the new  flag to see what was added this week.

Blade & Soul Revolution: Second Blade & Soul Mobile Game Announced

Netmarble has revealed that they’re developing Blade & Soul Revolution, a mobile MMORPG. If you’re getting a sense of déjà vu don’t worry, you aren’t. Just a few days ago NCSoft announced they’re working on a new mobile game in the Blade & Soul universe. That one is being called Blade & Soul II. There hasn’t been any information released about it yet, only a teaser trailer which you can watch below. Our friends at MMOCulture have also reported that it is being made using Unreal Engine 4. The storyline will be based on the one from the PC game and iconic features like flying will be available. We’re expecting for there to be a lot more information about Blade & Soul Revolution next week at G-Star 2017 where it will reportedly be playable.

You may be asking yourself what Netmarble is doing making a mobile game for an NCSoft IP. I certainly was. NCSoft is actually the 4th largest shareholder of Netmarble with a 9.8% stake in the company. According to an article from MMOCulture back in May Netmarble is actually more valuable than NCSoft and Nexon after IPO. In fact, it is more valuable than LG Electronics who make television, phones, tablets, and home appliances. The more I started to dig into who owns a stake in what company from the MMO creators of the East the more of a headache I got. It would seem that everyone has a little bit of money in everyone else. NCSoft, Netmarble, Nexon, Tencent, CJ E&M are just a few of the names.

If you’re interested in finding out more about NCSoft’s upcoming Blade & Soul mobile MMO you can find it on our news post about it from earlier in the week which includes a teaser trailer. It’s an important move for NCSoft as their mobile games section has seen more than 400% increase in revenue in the third quarter according to the recently released NCSoft Quarterly Report.

Nexon and EA to Reveal New Project This Week

With G-Star 2017 closing in this November, Korea’s biggest game developers are preparing to power up their respective hype machines for their lineup of MMOs and games. Not one to be outdone, a surprise joint Nexon and EA project is set to be announced ahead of this year’s show.

nexon and ea

As one would expect from a teaser announcement, specifics are pretty vague. All that’s confirmed is the fact that this new joint project between the two companies is set to be revealed this coming Thursday, November 2nd.

While there’s no official confirmation yet, it’s expected that this new game will be making a prominent appearance at the G-Star event, whatever it may end up becoming. The announcement is the first out of Nexon ahead of G-Star, with Netmarble already making a variety of announcements and Bluehole Inc. also set to unveil their own secret project at the show.

Our Thoughts

The combination of Electronic Arts and Nexon to create any sort of game, whether it’s an MMO or otherwise, is most certainly one to raise a lot of eyebrows and even more suspicions. We’ll bite our tongues and not make too many snap judgements about business model practices until more information is revealed in the week. Just know that it’s hard as heck to do so.

Bluehole to Reveal New PC MMORPG, Project W at G-Star 2017

Thanks to our friends over at MMOCulture we now know that Bluehole, the folks behind TERA and the insanely popular Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds will be revealing Project W at G-Star 2017. We’ve been following this project since it was first announced back in November 2016.

What we know about Project W So Far

It is an MMORPG for PCs being developed by industry veteran Hyung-Jun Kim, most famous for his work with NCSoft.

Most notably Bluehole is not publishing it in North America and Europe through their Western subsidiary, En Masse Entertainment. Instead, they will be working with Kakao, the makers of Black Desert Online. In Japan, it will be published by GameOn.

It will be powered by Unreal Engine 3.

The W in Project W is meant to stand for ‘World’.

Bluehole have shot down the rumors that a TERA sequel is in the works.

A studio rep has said that the game’s combat will be quite different from TERA and will also combine social and strategic features. Though this was in 2014 so it is possible that this isn’t the case anymore or they were talking about another title altogether.

There have been job listings for Project W throughout 2017, including one currently up for a Business Product Manager that speaks both Korean and Japanese.

As you can see there really isn’t a whole lot of information available yet. While many may have forgotten all about this briefly announced secret project it certainly hasn’t been forgotten. Early on after it was first announced many in the public assumed the title would be released in 2018. If this were the case, however, there would be a lot more information out about the game. If the hiring that they’ve been doing over the last year is any indication when it was announced in 2016 the project was still in its early days.

Now we have a single image to go along with the codename. The image itself may be a bit on the small side but it looks gorgeous. It gives off a little bit of a steampunk vibe with the scenery, the weapons being used, and what appears to be a machine gun with legs. The image has appeared on exhibitor list for G-Star.

G-Star 2017 will run from November 16th to the 19th. It is possible that the studio will hold a press conference in the days leading up to G-Star, this is a popular thing to do for this convention, especially when there are big announcements being made. With that in mind, MMOGames will be watching Bluehole closely to keep an eye out for any new information as it gets released. It’s only a month until we find out more about Project W at G-Star 2017
