Hand of the Gods: Smite Tactics, the Smite Tactical Card Game is Shutting Down

Its been a while since we’ve heard any news from Hi-Rez and now that we have it’s only bad news. The Smite Tactical Card Game Hand of the Gods: Smite Tactics is shutting down on January 1st 2020. This was announced via Twitter and fan reaction was sad, but not surprised. The game has undergone a number of changes throughout its development and many of the fans who enjoyed the game lost their love for it over time.

As a thank you for fan’s time spent, and to make the rest of the time the game is live more enjoyable Hi-Rez is giving everyone 100,000 runes.

Hand of the Gods launched February 20, 2018 which means that sadly the game won’t make it 2 years being live. It first appeared as an Early Access title in 2017.

There was also news about Smite, good news though. Persephone, Goddess of the Underworld has been added to the Smite pantheon. She’s the first God to be added to the game since April. From the sound of it she’s a pretty complex character. She’s a mage with powerful long-distance attacks, the ability to summon plants, and she can plant seeds that can revive her if enough are collected. As always to help you get an idea of how Persephone plays Hi-Rez has released a God Reveal video. It’s nearly 5 minutes long and has a lot of information to take in.

This Persephone is nothing like the one from Punderworld. She’s a dark and vicious fighter. So really, she fits right in with the Smite pantheon.

Release Date Confirmed for Hand of the Gods

It’s all the bubbly, effervescent taste of SMITE, but in handy-dandy digital CCG style! And it’s coming to your favorite platform near the end of the month! Hi-Rez has officially announced the Hand of the Gods release date, granting players of the game’s current beta build the date for when full play begins in earnest.

hand of the gods release date

Hand of the Gods will officially make its debut on Tuesday, February 20th for PC, Xbox, and PS4. Players can get in on the action free, but can additionally purchase a Core Set that includes Chinese, Egyptian, Greek, Mayan, and Neutral pantheon cards for $19.99 or buy individual Pantheon Core Sets for $7.99 each.

All told, getting all 300 cards available in the game at launch should set you back no more than $45, and players are still able to earn cards without paying money and unlock them simply by playing if they so choose.

if you’ve already bought into the game through the Venus Competitor’s Pack, you’ll be getting the Core Set bundle for absolutely free. In addition, those who have already been playing the game will get to keep all of their unlocked cards and will have previously spent Runes returned to their account.

More details about the game can be found right here

Our Thoughts

The question remains, however: just how much of a grind is it in order to unlock additional cards without having to pay? While $45 is certainly a reasonable cost, fairness in free-to-play is pretty vital. Especially in digital CCGs, where there’s a very real trap of a business model hitting that “pay to win/pay for power” problem. We’ll have to investigate further, but until then we do hope that players have a good time when Hand of the Gods launches in full.

Hand of the Gods Begins Closed Beta on Consoles

That’s right, if you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber or Xbox Live Gold member, you’ll not only be able to enter the CCG’s closed beta, but you’ll also get a promotional bundle featuring a unique Leader Skin, card back, player icon, and five Core Packs to grant players a headstart in building their own decks.

If you’re not among those subscribed to either console’s service, you can still guarantee a spot in the closed beta by purchasing one of two different Founder’s Packs.

The length of time closed beta will run was not confirmed in the announcement. However, players are encouraged to follow the game on Twitter as well as on their website for more details. There is also a trailer heralding the game’s arrival to consoles which can be seen below.

Our Thoughts

The announcement we received notes that Hand of the Gods isn’t like many offerings on consoles and so that should certainly draw player interest to the title. We’re definitely looking forward to hearing how this game is received, and if you’re among those who will be hopping in, be sure you check out our Camazotz card giveaway to get your own Legendary Mayan God card!

The improvements in question include a refinement of combat logs, a deck tracker, and the addition of Clans to the tactical CCG. Hand of the Gods’ landing on Steam also brings with it a new Starter Pack, which has a collection of seven core packs and a skin for Ra, leader of the game’s Egyptian pantheon. This pack can be bought at a cost of $4.99.

The announcement also brings a tease for the next pantheon to arrive to Hand of the Gods: the Hindu pantheon, led by the god Ganesha and bringing new God, Spell, and Creature cards. Of course, additional updates and balance changes are planned by Hi-Rez over the course of open beta.

With the expansion of the game to Steam, this should mean more opponents to clash with. We are looking forward to additional developments and releases for this one and we hope that fans of strategy games and CCGs will find a lot to like about Hand of the Gods.
