Hi-Rez is Making a 1v1 Mobile RTS Called Bot Smashers

It would appear that, in addition to the in-development Paladins Strike that was announced earlier today, Hi-Rez is working on another mobile title. HRX was the site for the Bot Smashers reveal, a new mobile RTS that will likely involve the smashing of bots.

Details on Bot Smashers are currently sparse right now as the game’s website has only a few pieces of information in its FAQ. However, an included video seems to suggest that Bot Smashers will have some form of online multiplayer component as battles play out one-on-one on a specifically designed arena.

Here’s what the informational blurb on said video has to say:

“Wreck, explode, destroy, and otherwise obliterate the opposition with a unique cast of quirky robots in this real-time strategy battler. Build your base, develop your own strategies, and become the top smasher of bots. Collect and upgrade dozens of bots who serve your thirst for destruction.”

Interested players are invited to sign up for early access on the Bot Smashers site. You can also check out the trailer for the game below.

Our Thoughts

This kind of game seems to be the sort of quick-moving fun type of title that’s perfect for mobile. We’re most definitely curious to learn more about Bot Smashers as well as see if there’s a lot of demand for something like this, so be sure to give your own impressions below.

Paladins is Adding a Battle Royale Mode

If you somehow weren’t sure that PUBG has made a monumental influence in gaming, then let the new Paladins battle royale mode be an example. In spite of the perhaps obvious inspiration, Paladins: Battlegrounds is promising something new both in setting and in gameplay.

paladins battle royale

In the announcement, it was explained that the combination of a fantasy setting and the ability-based hero combat of Paladins combines with battle royale for what is intended to be a completely new experience.

“Riding on a mount through this massive fantasy-themed map, looking for gear and cooperating with your team, Paladins: Battlegrounds delivers some of the feel of open-world MMO PvP but all within a 20-minute match,” says Paladins executive producer Todd Harris.

Paladins: Battlegrounds is built to be a team-based affair from the ground up. 100 players will spawn into a map that’s 300 times the size of a regular Paladins Siege map, where they can ride their mounts across the area to scavenge loot, find dropped crates from passing zeppelins and, of course, find members of the opposing team to take out. Like other battle royale games, there will be a fog that closes in to shrink the battlefield. Last team standing wins.

If you prefer your Paladins without any PUBG, Hi-Rez has also made some reveals at HRX on that front as well:

  • The 35th Champion, Moji has been revealed, a Flank character who rides a two-headed dragon into battle and can transform foes into treats for her pet to snack on.
  • Team Deathmatch is on the way, along with a brand new map.
  • A new Battle Cat mount type, the first of which will be handed out free to Twitch Prime members along with other goodies.
  • An in-development mobile title called Paladins Strike, which combines a hero shooter with a MOBA in a top-down view and controls refined for mobile gaming.

As for Paladins: Battlegrounds, the mode will be free-to-play as is the case for Paladins entirely. An alpha build of the mode is playable on the HRX floor, while the mode is expected to release sometime in 2018. You can check out the mode’s teaser trailer below.

Our Thoughts

Paladins is most definitely stepping on the gas for 2018, both in the base game and with this new battle royale mode. We’re not completely sure if this Battlegrounds mode is really unique enough to make it stand out, but we are certainly curious to try it ourselves at some point. We’re even more curious to learn how fans will react to this addition, so if you’ve got opinions for or against Paladins: Battlegrounds, be sure to let us know.

SMITE Reveals New Conquest Map and Cerberus

Hi-Rez Expo has dropped another big bundle of reveals for fans of the studio’s various games and SMITE is most definitely bringing the goods. The latest HRX SMITE reveals include a brand new map for 5v5 Conquest mode, the upcoming arrival of Cerberus, and plans for two new pantheons.

First – and perhaps the most intriguing for fans – is the new Conquest map debuting with Season 5. The new map is described to have “perfect vertical symmetry” between the Order and Chaos sides, with exact same shapes for lane and jungle paths along the top and bottom ends of the map.

“Our goal for these changes is to provide a unified aesthetic that breathes new life into the map, while improving the gameplay experience,” said SMITE’s lead designer A.J. Walker. “Overall, this creates a more consistent gameplay experience.”

In addition, Cerberus was teased during the presentation, marking the 93rd playable addition to the SMITE roster. Plans are also being made to introduce roster additions from the Voodoo and Slavic pantheons, which will be further detailed later in the year.

The new three-headed doggo friend will arrive to the game on PC with Patch 4.25 on Tuesday, January 9th. The new Conquest map will be available on SMITE’s Test server on Wednesday, January 17th.

Our Thoughts

Like we said, SMITE is bringing the goods. While a perfectly symmetrical map might seem a bit…boring, it also does seem to be the best way to balance a competitive game mode. We’re definitely looking forward to seeing how players take to Triple Pupper and the new Conquest map over the course of this month!
