Fortnite News: v4.5, Season 5’s Start, and Hope for PS4 Cross-Play

As often is the case with Fortnite news, there’s a whole stankin’ mess of updates for the game to the point I literally was drafting this story twice before something new came up. So, here’s all that’s current in the online shooter as of this writing…which means we’ll need to update this later on in about an hour’s time. But it’s okay, you’re all worth it.

fortnite news

We’ll start with the latest update to the Fortnite game entire first. Patch 4.5 has made a number of beefy updates to Battle Royale, adding a new weapon in the form of dual pistols; letting teams place a visual beacon for where to drop in and gather; and opening up the Playground LTM that grants friends an hour to build, battle among themselves, and explore weapon and play strategies in a private instance of the battleground.

Patch 4.5 has also added a couple of changes to Save the World, introducing the finale of the game’s Blockbuster quest line, the Builder Pro controller layout, and a new enemy among other updates to the PvE mode.

All of these updates seem to be the last of Season 4’s offerings, as the game’s subreddit has offered details on the start of Season 5. Players can look forward to the new season on Thursday, July 12th at precisely 4am EDT. To help people push their way through the Battle Pass a little faster, the game will be offering a 100% match XP boost this coming weekend from June 29th to July 2nd.

Finally, there’s a small glimmer of hope for fans who found their Epic Games accounts under lock and key thanks to their connection to PS4. Sony Interactive Entertainment America’s CEO Shawn Layden answered a question during the Gamelab conference in Spain about the company’s insistence to not allow cross-platform play and the perception that they’re not hearing complaints about the policy.

“We’re hearing it,” assured Layden. “I’m confident we’ll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business. We’re looking at a lot of the possibilities.”

Our Thoughts

Let’s check…yeah, okay, looks like the most current details for now! There’s certainly plenty to digest here, but we’ll focus on the statement from one of Sony’s top brass, which sounds a bit like a possible concession is being made. Here’s hoping its not too mealy-mouthed and watered down. That wouldn’t be “For the Players”, would it?

Epic Games: Fortnite Save the World Will “Definitely Continue”

With all the buzz surrounding Fortnite Battle Royale, it’s pretty easy to get depressed by the state of Fortnite Save the World, especially if you first got into the game for its PvE mode and not for a PvP battleground. According to at least one Epic Games employee, however, players shouldn’t fear for StW’s safety.

fortnite save the world

Responding to a post on the Fortnite subreddit, a member of the dev team reassured that Save the World is not headed for the trash bin. “Save the World will definitely continue and we have more to bring you in the coming months,” reads part of the post.

The post continued on to mention an earlier roadmap that included seasonal events, along with a developer video posted in January which answered a community question about Epic abandoning the mode with a resounding “no”.

“It’s our intent to continue to deliver updates to the campaign and also to continue to bring events,” says creative director Darren Sugg in the video.

A more recent video from earlier in February also mentions how the team will be breaking up event updates into “weekly, bite-sized” chunks, with the recently-launched Spring It On event being the first unveiling of this new cadence.

Our Thoughts

With all due respect to the developer who very kindly stepped into the game’s subreddit to respond to the concern, “bite-sized” seasonal event updates are not what one would call “content”, particularly when Battle Royale gets a nice, long blog post about the state of its development.

Fortnite Battle Royale Launches a Limited-Time 50v50 Mode

What’s going to happen when two teams of 50 players are dropped into an open field and told to blow each other away? People are finding out right now as a new Fortnite Battle Royale mode is available to the game in a 50v50 battle to the digital death.

fortnite battle royale mode

The 50v50 mode is part of a new playlist that will be live in Fortnite BR between now and Sunday, December 17th. Players can queue up either solo or in teams of three and will have communication and friendly indicators much like players would see in any duo or squad match.

For 50v50, friendly fire will be disengaged (thankfully) and VoIP will be limited to your team to better let you hear insults from your companions instead of your enemies. Non-squad teammates will not be visible until you land and even then visibility of them will be limited.

50v50 is the first of several planned special event/unique match types that are due to come to Fortnite Battle Royale in the future. For now, though, you can look at a very staged assumption of how this new mode could work in the trailer below.

Our Thoughts

All snark about how large teams coordinate aside, 50v50 does seem like an interesting twist to what is otherwise a pretty basic gameplay formula. We hope that fans of Fortnite Battle Royale have a good time and we are certainly curious what other limited-time events are planned for the game. Now, how about that Save the World mode, huh? Is that still a thing?
