Neverwinter Uprising Introduces a New Playable Race

Neverwinter has announced that their seventeenth module, Neverwinter Uprising will be releasing on August 13th for PC. This update will introduce a new 10-man endgame trial, new PvP content, a recrafted early game experience, and of course as mentioned in the title…a new playable race.

The new playable race is the Gith, a race of psionic warriors who are seeking retribution against the Illithid. The conflict between the two races erupts within the cavern of Undermountain, offering players the opportunity to challenge Halaster Blackcloak in an endgame 10 man trial.

Thanks to adventurer’s efforts in Undermountain Protector’s Enclave is getting renovated. The new influx of money means that big changes will be coming to this beloved city. The changes don’t stop there though! Adventurers leaving from Protector’s Enclave will find an updated early game experience. This includes several changes made zones and stories.

Of course, these things are all just the start. A Tales of Old event will revive more dungeons from the past. The fashion system is being overhauled. Plus there will be a ton of class optimizations to prepare for an all-new PvP map with new gear that can be earned.

All of these things, plus much more will be available in Neverwinter on PC on August 13th. Upon the release of Neverwinter Uprising a release date will be made for when it will be playable on all other platforms. This is pretty standard for Neverwinter and longtime fans of the game are well used to this model.

Check out the trailer for Neverwinter Uprising below.

Neverwinter Gets Its Largest Expansion Yet With Undermountain

Ready to escape to a new world, Neverwinter fans? Perfect World Entertainment has you covered. It’s time to scale the mountain! Or rather, the undermountain. The company has announced that Neverwinter: Undermountain is now available on PC, and set to come to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on June 11.

“In this expansive new update, adventurers are summoned to Halaster Blackcloak’s enormous dungeon beneath Waterdeep where they will explore five diverse new Adventure Zones via the Yawning Portal social hub. Adventurers in Neverwinter can also look forward to a level cap increase to 80, an Endgame Dungeon, Class Powers and Feats overhauls, a revamped Boons system, a richer loot drop experience, and tons more in Undermountain,” the company noted in its press release.

Here are the features available within the game, straight from Perfect World:

  • Undermountain Campaign– The many levels of Undermountain hold secrets, exceptional rewards, wondrous beasts and remarkable experiences. The Mad Mage has called adventurers to the cavernous halls below Waterdeep, but for what purpose? Players must survive five brand new Adventure Zones to find out.
  • New Expedition Feature– This all-new feature introduced in Undermountain highlights the unknowable nature of the levels beneath Waterdeep. Expeditions will challenge adventurers with scaling, dynamic, repeatable quests in the search for magic relics, lost routes and some of the expansion’s greatest rewards.
  • Class Revamps – All eight of Neverwinter’s classes will receive varying levels of balance and adjustments in this expansion. Each class has also been renamed to align with Fifth Edition. The goal with these changes is to align classes with their roles and make customization within each path viable, fun and more straightforward.
  • Rewards Overhaul– The most notorious dungeon in all of Faerûn will reward adventurers with the best loot in all of Neverwinter. With a level cap increase to 80, new sources of powerful loot including tiered artifact sets can be earned throughout Undermountain and from its caverns’ inhabitants.
  • Endgame Challenge Campaign – Neverwinter’s many older and non-leveling-zone campaigns now offer three weekly bounties earning currency for rewards that are in-line with their endgame characters, regardless of whether the zone these quests were completed in are considered “Endgame”, e.g., Underdark or Sharandar.
  • Redesigned Companions System – Player Companions now fall into one of five categories. The more companions owned within each category, the stronger active companions will be with power upgrades. Synergy will create the biggest bonuses, however, the goal of these changes is to ensure all players can use whichever companions that they want, without punishment.
  • Halaster Encounters– The Mad Mage’s influence can be felt throughout Undermountain, with unpredictable appearances presenting opportunities to witness his full control over this domain. After all, it is his home.

“Players will encounter and be guided by the proprietor of the well-known tavern, Durnan (voiced by Dungeon Master Ruty Rutenberg), and the Chultan priest of Waukeen, Obaya Uday (voiced by D&D community leader and founder of Gilding Light, Satine Phoenix). Adventurers in Neverwinter can also look forward to a level cap increase to 80, an Endgame Dungeon, Class Powers and Feats overhauls, a revamped Boons system, a richer loot drop experience and tons more in Undermountain,” the company said.

It’s a free-to-play title still, so there’s no reason why you shouldn’t jump in and check it out. The trailer is below, and really gives you a good idea of what to expect!

Cryptic Releases a Statement Regarding the Neverwinter Ban Wave

Most of the Neverwinter fanbase is still on fire regarding the Barovia Hunt ban wave that hit the game this past weekend against users of a known exploit. Now, Cryptic Studios has issued a statement elaborating on what it says are additional measures taken to warn players.

barovia hunt ban wave

According to the statement, the September 12th posting on the website was not the only warning granted to Neverwinter players:

“Players were notified about the exploit and abuse consequences via an official statement from our Community Manager on the ArcGames.com Forums, which was also replicated on Reddit.”

The problem with Cryptic’s action, as detailed by one of our commenters, is that the exploit in question was three months old and was ignored by the devs. It was only after the exploit got out of hand that they decided to fix it as well as take action against those who used it according to the player’s claim.

Regardless, Cryptic appears to be using its terms of service as an explanation for its action and directs those who wish to dispute any ban on their account to contact the customer service team.

Our Thoughts

So the dispute here, then, appears to be the fact that the alert against use of the exploit was not early enough. Still, if Cryptic knew about an exploit for that long, then so did the players, which speaks a bit more to that “willful ignorance” thing we mentioned in the original report. Unless, as before, players genuinely assumed that the exploit was the way Barovia Hunts were meant to be played. Still, we’d rather that Cryptic handled this a bit more delicately with more carefully targeted bans.

Neverwinter Unleashes a Ban Wave for Barovia Hunt Exploits

The hammer has come down on a number of Neverwinter players. A Barovia Hunt exploit that was well known by both players and devs has finally been shut down and consequences meted out to those who took advantage.

barovia hunt exploit

The exploit in question was listed as a known issue by the devs in a post on September 12th, which warned players that using the exploit was a breach of the game’s Terms of Service and subject to “possible actions.” As of this past weekend, the exploit has since been closed and an undisclosed number of players are being banned from the MMO.

The game’s community appears to be in a furor over the ban wave, arguing that the exploit in question was open for so long and was so widespread that it became practically a feature of gameplay. On the other end of the argument, as stated in one related Reddit thread, taking advantage of the exploit is akin to robbing from a neighbor because they left their door unlocked.

Our Thoughts

While the ban wave may indeed seem rather heavy-handed, we have to admit that people seeing consequences as a result of ignoring the warning should not surprise a lot of people. In many cases, this sounds like a rash of willful ignorance, barring those who don’t follow updates made to the game’s website extremely closely.

Penny Arcade’s Acquisitions Inc. Features in Neverwinter’s Next Module

If you’re a regular reader of the webcomic Penny Arcade, then you’re probably familiar with Acquisitions Incorporated, the D&D adventuring company. Well, prepare for a bit of that experience in Neverwinter with The Heart of Fire, the next module arriving to the MMORPG in collaboration with the comic’s writers.

the heart of fire

The new adventure will feature voice work and writing from Penny Arcade’s own Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, along with Amy Falcone as the wood elf druid Walnut Dankgrass. The module promises a hilarious new Acquisitions Inc. campaign that will see players taking on a beholder convention, battling sky pirates, and attempting to locate some giant red rubies. The update will also feature a new Skirmish and an overhaul of the Professions system.

“Many members of the team are huge fans of the world Mike and Jerry have created, so bringing their stories into the game was both an honor and a pleasure,” remarked executive producer Gordon Fong in a statement. “From a witty writing style that’s unlike previous tales we’ve told, to the exciting antics that await freshly minted Acq. Inc. employees, we know there’s something in The Heart of Fire for every D&D fan.”

The Heart of Fire will make its way to the PC version of Neverwinter on Tuesday, November 6th. An announcement trailer can be seen below.

Our Thoughts

As much as we love seeing all of the classic modules and adventures of the original D&D, we are even more excited at seeing some truly unique content arriving to the game, especially content that has fun with the license. Here’s hoping for more original modules sooner rather than later!

Ravenloft Arrives to Neverwinter Console Players

As I write this from where I’m located, it feels about 90°F, so a little bit of spooky season reminder from Neverwinter that the cooler months are coming is a welcome reprieve. I’m referring to the gothic horror stylings of the Ravenloft console launch, which brings the decidedly Halloween-y location of Barovia and all of its horror-themed threats to Xbox One and PS4 players of the MMO today.

ravenloft console launch

The 14th module for the Dungeons & Dragons MMO takes players to the adventure zone of Barovia, domain of Count Strahd von Zarovich and all of the goodies that PC players have enjoyed in the update. That means a new endgame dungeon in Castle Ravenloft itself; new Monster Hunts and a new heroic encounter, Tarokka Cards that can either be turned in for rewards or used to modify Monster Hunt difficulty; and a meaningful day/night cycle.

The update is also offering a few quality-of-life adjustments to Neverwinter such as changes to Astral Diamond refinement, Refinement Point event bonuses, and changes to level scaling. A rundown of all of the new features and changes can be found on the patch notes page.

Our Thoughts

Seriously though, folks, it’s freaking hot over here. So thanks to Neverwinter for the reminder that autumn will be here before we know it. Also, thanks for releasing a spoopy playground full of gothic horror-themed foes to take on for the console version of Neverwinter. We’re looking forward to beating up on the creatures of the night.

Neverwinter: Ravenloft Goes Live on PC

It’s time for Neverwinter players on PC to strap in for spookiness and fight the urge to use their most forced Romanian accent. Today’s Ravenloft launch on PC opens up the region of Barovia and invites players to explore the realm of Count Strahd von Zarovich. But, seriously, don’t try to sound Romanian. You sound like a moron.

ravenloft launch

Players will see some mysterious new arrivals to the Protector’s Enclave, kicking off a meeting with the Tarokka Card-reading Madame Eva and ultimately into Barovia. Players can expect to see a variety of infamous places in the new region, including Castle Ravenloft itself.

Among the new gameplay features arriving with this new module are a day/night cycle that sees different monsters and NPCs available and monster behaviors changing; a Tarokka Card system that lets players either apply them to the region’s Monster Hunts for unique rewards or turn in a full set to Madame Eva for a special reward; and an endgame dungeon where players will enter the castle of Count Strahd himself.

Ravenloft is free and now available for PC, with a launch date for console to be announced later.

Our Thoughts

Like we said before, we love some good gothic-flavored creepiness and the realm of Barovia is just oozing with that style. Here’s hoping that PC players of Neverwinter enjoy their time darting about the new adventure zone.
