Being one of the most popular team-based FPS games, you’d better believe that Overwatch’s Jeff Kaplan has his eyes on the pulse of the shooter sub-genre. In an interview with Kotaku, Kaplan offered his own thoughts on the current rush of battle royale titles and the things that are preventing Overwatch battle royale from happening right now.
First and foremost, Kaplan admitted that he and the Overwatch team are PUBG fans and so he’s already keen on the gameplay of battle royale. That said, making the same mode in Overwatch has more roadblocks than most fans would assume despite games like Fortnite Battle Royale’s initial two month-long development cycle.
“Overwatch wasn’t designed to be a 1v1. Every hero’s not balanced against every other hero,” said Kaplan. “Overwatch is a game about heroes, and part of what makes the core loop work in a battle royale game is the search, the looting, and the fairness that everybody’s sort of equal.”
Additionally, the maps in Overwatch are comparatively small when put against battle royale gaming’s sprawling spaces; the longest area is Hanamura’s point B at 45 meters and the average engagement range of most fights runs between 15 and 40 meters.
“There’s a lot of design and tech work to get us to that place and not just feel like a me-too game,” says Kaplan. “Building those systems and getting that many players – I think battle royale for Overwatch starts to get into new game territory.”
As far as what’s coming in the more immediate future for Overwatch, Kaplan released a new dev video hinting at additional reveals for the Overwatch Archives event which you can see below.
Makes sense, though to be fair to Mr. Kaplan, those are also probably challenges that Paladins ran into when they decided to put together Paladins Battlegrounds. Maybe he can approach some of those folks about their thought processes behind the mode and make it happen? Or would you rather not see Overwatch Royale?
