Today it was announced by Perfect World that Torchlight Frontiers has become Torchlight III. The game will be launching on Steam this summer and alpha testing for it begins on January 29th.
“When we started developing Torchlight Frontiers, we were focused on creating a shared-world experience,” said Max Schaefer, CEO of Echtra Games and co-founder of the Torchlight franchise. “During development, you often discover what type of product a game was meant to be and we found Torchlight Frontiers was meant to be a true successor to Torchlight I & II. Based on this and extensive feedback from our Alpha testers, we decided it was time to take the game back to its roots and model it after the classic Torchlight games that ARPG fans have come to love. We’d like to thank our dedicated player base for supporting us and providing such insightful feedback during early development.”
The game had previously been announced as a free to play title but it will be going to the premium model that Torchlight and Torchlight II had before it. In fact, this isn’t the only way in which they’re going back to the familiar way of doing things that they’ve already established. Rather than focusing on horizontal progression, the game has gone back to the familiar linear structure that Torchlight fans know and love.
They have also announced that Torchlight III will have a brand new class, though they aren’t ready to reveal what it is quite yet. There will be more information on it as the launch date approaches.
It’s always exciting when a studio listens to the feedback from their players and this is no exception. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for Torchlight III.
Today Perfect World Mobile launched in 120 countries around the world. The game is the mobile re-imagining of the classic MMORPG. Before it launched more than 1 million people pre-registered their interest.
While this is being called a global launch there are actually some restrictions on who has access to this global server. The following countries are blocked from what is being called the North American version:
Russia and CIS
This list isn’t really all that surprising at all really. When it comes to global releases of games they rarely include Japan, China, or South Korea. Each of them typically have their own release. This can often be said of Russia as well. In China, Perfect World Mobile shot up to the number 2 spot on the App Store within 5 hours of its launch. While the most recent update has received 2.6 million downloads within the first 12 hours of its release.
It will be interesting to see if the game makes Superdata’s top 10 mobile games list for the month when the one for September is released in October. Tencent’s Honour of Kings, Arena of Valor in the West has dominated the top spot in the charts for most of the year and it was the highest-grossing mobile game in 2018. Pokemon Go bounces between second and third place month to month. The 7-year-old Clash of Clans is still in the mobile top 10 list every month as well. So there’s a lot of opportunity for Perfect World Mobile to work its way into the monthly top 10.
Today Star Trek Online Rise of Discovery launched on PC, bringing Captain Gabriel Lorca and Commander Ellen Landry to the MMO. They are of course voiced by Jason Isaacs and Rekha Sharma from the Star Trek Discovery TV series.
In the first season of Star Trek Discovery, we were introduced to Captain Lorca with very little detail on his past and how he came to be in command of the USS Discovery. Now, in Star Trek Online fans will get the opportunity to find out more about his past. Rise of Discovery takes place just one month after the Battle at the Binary Stars. The update features two new episodes, introduces a new tier 6 reputation called “Discovery Legends,” and more.
Discovery Legends will allow players to earn Discovery themed rewards and all of the Discovery Task Force Operations will now feature Advanced and Elite versions that have been converted to support this new reputation and pay out Discovery Legend Marks.
Plus, starting today level restrictions have been removed for Tier 6 starships. This goes into effect on all platforms; PC, PS4, and Xbox One at the same time. Premium ships will scale to the player character’s level for the first time in STO history.
