Where Are They Now? Kickstarter Edition

Game development is not a quick process. Conception, design, execution, they all take vast amounts of time and money. Of course these days there are more options open to people between the range of engines out there to encourage hobbyists and professionals to try them out and alternative funding methods like Fig and Kickstarter.

So while sometimes people can get their hands on the tools and the funds easier, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the entire process of making an MMO is faster, just run slightly differently. With that in mind, let’s look back over some of the Kickstarter funded MMOs that have caught our eyes in recent years and ask, where are they now?

Chronicles of Elyria

Kickstarter funded MMOs

Project launched: May 3rd, 2016

10,752 backers pledged $1,361,435.

Still in Development.

Chronicles of Elyria hopes to fashion a world for you to be in. Taking the best, as they see it, of sandbox and theme park MMOs they have tried to coin a Multiplayer Evolving Online World or MEOW. Certainly, the approach to aging and joining families is a unique take on characters and progression. Happily, they’re still hard at work on things and pledge packages are available through their website which themselves are also tied to more in-game rewards for people. The draw with their tailored story engine here is very strong for me at least and it certainly is a game worth keeping an eye on if you ever wanted to get out of the theme park grind and spend some time following a new destiny. The projected release date is in the second half of 2019.

Ashes of Creation

Project launched: May 1st, 2017

19,576 backers pledged $3,271,809.

Still in Development.

Ashes of Creation is a fantasy sandbox that is touting a new take on the approach. They are designing the world structure to be dynamic and building it to react to the actions of players. As they have said, cities will rise and fall, their populations based on the history of the world as the players create it. Certainly, the idea of helping mold a world is attractive, and work is continuing apace on both PvE and PvP as Chris Hughes reported in March. If you have a large amount of money burning a hole in your pocket, the $500 Intrepid Pre-Order pack is available and will get you into both Alpha builds of the game, the Beta still being a little ways off.

Shadow’s Kiss

Project launched: October 31st, 2017 (Of course)

884 backers pledged $80,414.

Still in Development.

Shadow’s Kiss is the first of two on our list trying to fund ongoing development through Patreon. Ever since CCP passed up on going ahead with the World of Darkness MMO, night dwellers and gothically inclined types have been devoid of dark modern fantasy MMO options. Vampires wouldn’t cope well in the bright shiny world of Secret World Legends after all….well Agartha at least. The goals for Shadow’s Kiss were considerably more modest than the rest of this list. Not every MMO needs the bells and whistles Blizzard-level of polish, but the rougher work here may be off-putting for some potential fans. Only time will tell if it does claw its way out of the grave and lurches into unlife for us all to try our hand at some neck biting.

Novus AEterno

Project launched: December 10th 2013

3,900 backers pledged $268,875.

Still in a lot of Development.

Novus AEterno is an odd duck on this list. It’s been kicking around for more than four years and also has undergone a name change to Hades 9. It’s the second on the list here to turn to Patreon to fund ongoing development though pledge packages and store bonds are available through their website. Originally billed as a sci-fi MMORTS I remember seeing it in action in an early form way back in 2012 at Gamescom. Since then it appears to still be a labor of love but not one that appears to be coming out any time soon. Perhaps showing an indie core more than anything else on this list, you can also apply to help build the game no matter your skill level. That if nothing else is a unique approach to fan engagement.

Project: Gorgon

Project launched: July 25th, 2015

1,318 backers pledged $74,781

Still in Development

Project: Gorgon is being brought to you by Elder Game Studios which rather nicely is led by husband and wife duo Eric Heimburg and Sandra Powers. Available now via Steam Early Access and a small amount of cash this is ready for you to jump into and experience, though with the normal caveats of an Early Access game. The team at Elder Game Studios certainly hopes to put together a different feeling game letting you pursue skills entirely at your own choosing and thus how you interact with the world. How well that works or how complex it turns out to be depends on how much you crave the ability to use psychology on bad guys or turn into a… werecow?

Crowfall

Project launched: February 24th, 2015

16,936 backers pledged $1,766,204

Still in Development

While Crowfall started with a nice chunk of change from Kickstarter, ongoing funding and pack purchases have helped them earn over $20 million. In fact, if you want to throw another $50 in the pot you can get your hands on the Pioneer Starter Pack and get your copy of Crowfall with a month of VIP access and immediate access to the 24×7 LIVE pre-alpha testing environment. Is that worth it? Well, you’ll get to play a burrowing sneaky dashing Guinecean. That’s worth an awful lot to me. They’re too adorable to win against so please look the other way while I ambush you. Crowfall is certainly a game that has flourished under the crowdfunding approach and the “new” way to interact with fans and backers. How well the throne war aspect of Crowfall works, in the end, depends on how many of us all rush in to get to grips with the game when it finally goes live. For now, though, everything looks to be going its way.

Star Citizen

star citizen like eve online

Project launched: October 18th, 2012

34,397 backers pledged $2,134,374

In Development Until The End Of Time

Star Citizen, you knew it was going to be on the list. According to their website, they have earned $185,689,880. According to Polygon earlier this year Star Citizen raised more money than every other video game on Kickstarter combined in 2017 and that’s for the second year in a row. Star Citizen doesn’t just have enough money to make an MMO, it has enough money to buy several islands, install Chris Roberts as Dictator for Life and make a genuine start on a navy. It continues to gain funds despite the occasional lawsuit or controversy that comes its way. How? Who knows? Will it ever come out? Who knows? All we can do is keep an open mind, though some clearly are keeping open wallets. Whatever ultimately happens with the game, there will be no mistaking its impact on the crowdfunding sphere or denying its fallout should it stumble at the last.

Don’t be surprised if all the RSI staff do go with the buy an island/get a navy route to fend off annoyed fans. Nearly six years on, that’s probably more likely than the game launching.

So there are seven random Kickstarter MMOs picked. All of them are still working on coming out in one way or another. Of course, there will be games that strived and failed. Games that never made funding or games that just couldn’t get over development. Why not share the ones you are most looking forward to or miss dearly?

MMOney: Q3 2017, Kickstarter, and Lootboxes

Shadow’s Kiss Funds

Shadow’s Kiss, the Vampire MMO from Clockwork Throne Studios has finished up its Kickstarter successfully. A very dark and mysterious 884 backers pledged $80,414 to help bring this project to unlife. While it fell short of some of the stretch goals, the original core experience was only aiming for $25,000. Here’s to a successful campaign and a game to watch in the future.

Crowfall Drops Pledges for Pre-Order Packages

Crowfall is making a shift. The company behind Crowfall, ArtCraft Entertainment, has decided to make the move from selling pledges as a kickstarted game would into selling pre-order packages.

“For the last two years, we’ve used crowdfunding (and company investment) to fund the game. Now that we’re getting closer to launch, we need to transition our project from selling pledge packages to selling pre-orders of the game.

On December 31st, we will retire all 2017 pledge packages and the majority of our parcels and strongholds bundles. Essentially, everything that was priced over $200 USD is being removed from our virtual item catalog.”

Visit the link for an FAQ and to get in on the eternal war if it catches your eye.

Saga of Lucimia Raises Funds

The team behind the Saga of Lucimia has continued to work on the game for nearly four years now despite a lack of traditional financing. Between their early pre-order program and participation in Early Access, they have almost entirely funded development to date with the team reaching into their own pockets to keep everything going. Now though they have announced a new evolution with the securing of independent funding for the game. Not only that but in January of 2018, they will be announcing several positions that they hope to fill for the calendar year on a contract basis. So if you want to ready that resume and join in on one of the more unique roads to an MMO, time is short.

Jeremy Soule Kickstarter Album Gets an Update

From a positive note to a slightly less so one. 4,256 backers on Kickstarter brought together $121,227 to fund the Soule Symphony No. 1, “The Northerner” way back in March 2013.  This huge amount pledged was based off of a $10,000 goal. Since the original report on Kotaku regarding the absence of the album, some news has emerged with Soule chiming in and Kotaku updating the report:

“Shortly after the publication of this article, Soule said he will release “Northerner Diaries” to backers on December 20. This is not the symphony he Kickstarted, Soule told Kotaku, but “the fully produced vignettes of my ideas for it so far.””

Raph Koster Chimes in on the Economics of Making a Game

How much does it cost to make a game? What are the overheads faced by companies? If you are interested in the reality of game economics and the pressures faced by companies there is a masterclass available on Raph Kosters blog. Raph Koster was the lead designer of Ultima Online and the creative director behind Star Wars Galaxies. He has probably forgotten more about the games industry than we could hope to recount over the course of his career.

If I had to go with a choice quote, it would easily be this:

“Basically, there isn’t a good business plan. There aren’t any realistic expectations. Any sane business person would say “don’t make games.” You can see this in MMOs now — where just getting 100k people subbing to something ought to make a highly satisfactory viable business… but go look at player reactions to visuals that aren’t at the absolute top end.”

Niantic Raises $200 Million for More AR Games

Niantic, the company behind the multiplayer mobile augmented reality games Ingress, Pokémon Go, and the upcoming Harry Potter game has raised roughly $200 million in funding. Recently we have heard plans for Ingress to be rebooted into Ingress Prime and of course, Pokémon Go continues to be popular. Exactly how popular their Harry Potter AR will be likely can only be measured on a scale of “Everyone plays” to “Seriously everyone plays”. Time will tell what those funds will make for us, but be prepared to hear more even about Niantic in the future.

Things Looking Up for Funcom

Funcom’s recent financial report and presentation for Q3 2017 is out now and contains some good news. They are reporting their third consecutive profitable quarter, which is now the most profitable YTD 3Q in Funcom history. This is a far cry from the dire straits they were in in recent memory. Further to that, they are reporting “Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization” of $1.8 million. Players of Secret World Legends can also look forward to more improvements in the game in 2018 with this being a key part of the financial presentation. Congratulations to Funcom on the great news.

NCSoft Has Strong Q3

From one studio’s financials to another, this time with NCSoft. According to our friends at Massively and the figures themselves, NCsoft had an exceptionally good third financial quarter this year, reaching a record high in sales and operating profit for the company. Guild Wars 2 gets a highlight for the sales of Path of Fire being robust, even if not as high as Heart of Thorns. Of course, there’s also the massive rush in mobile for NCSoft recently so keep an eye on your phones for more of their games headed that way.

The Lootbox Saga Continues

No business roundup would be complete this year without mentioning loot boxes or the major disappointments with both Star Wars Battlefront 2 in particular and EA in general. With various parts of the world waking up to the scandal regarding loot boxes, we have had governments move to investigate if they are gambling which will in turn likely bring down regulation upon them. Belgium wants to ban loot boxes on the basis of gambling and if nothing changes, that may echo across the EU and before long the industry as a whole. The sum effect thus far, however, was a sharp decline in EA stock trading wiping out a not inconsiderable amount of shareholder value. Of course, even with this recent backlash, EA is still trading at levels far beyond what it was a year ago. Only time will tell what the long-term effects will be of a short-term microtransaction grab.

Digital Game Revenue up 15%

According to the market research specialists in Superdata digital games revenue grew 15% worldwide in October. With players having spent $8.5 billion across console, mobile, and PC in October, up from an equally stellar $7.4 billion in the same month last year. League of Legends still sits atop a mountain of cash of course but Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds is hardly slacking having recently set a number of world records and inspiring Bluehole to turn their Devilian creating subsidiary into the PUBG Corp. Will battle royales continue to chase after MOBAs or are we seeing a shift in the worlds favourite sort of game?

Shadow’s Kiss Kickstarter Enters Final Days

The Shadow’s Kiss Kickstarter campaign enters its final days this weekend having raised more than 250% of their original pledge goal. While in other news, Clockwork Throne, the indie developer behind the in-development vampire MMO, seems to be a bit of a killer work environment.

Okay not literally, they’ve put out a fun little mockumentary series wherein the game’s devs get into the spirit of things towards the end of their Kickstarter campaign. From the words of the press release: “Several designer spots are now open, and one of their character artists is now only able to work nights.” You can check out the mockumentary on the dedicated page.

As for the Shadow’s Kiss Kickstarter, midnight of December 4th is the endpoint, and we’re not far off now. They have unlocked Crafting and the Ritual Magic system, along with a few other goodies, and are just a small amount off unlocking Music & Voice. So if this game is something you’re thinking about looking into, get backing over the next couple of days!

“We’re honored and a bit overwhelmed by the support from the community,” said Thomas Sitch, President of Clockwork Throne. “This Kickstarter is going to allow us to finally bring the world a vampire-themed MMO, with gothic story elements, horror, and the ‘coolness factor’ of being a vampire set on ruling the night.”

Check the Kickstarter page here for more information.

Our Thoughts

Oh, the campy fun Clockwork Throne are having with this! Yes, it’s a little cringy but hey, all the best things are, right? We also extend our congratulations to them on their Kickstarter success, those unlocked stretch goals are always satisfying to see and we’re pretty excited to see how Shadow’s Kiss turns out. It’s super nice to see something a little bit different in development.

The MMO Alpha and Beta List: November 3, 2017

Another work week has come to an end. Time to celebrate! How, you might ask? How about beta testing a game? Sadly there aren’t any new games to add to the MMO Alpha and Beta list this weekend but next week, on November 7th, MU Legend will enter Open Beta. This is effectively a soft launch as there will be no further character wipes.

If you don’t mind waiting a little bit longer, in 2 weeks Life is Feudal will go into Open Beta and Ironsight will start Closed Beta.

Life is Feudal

If you’re looking to support an upcoming MMO, Adult Vampire-themed Shadow’s Kiss is holding a Kickstarter campaign throughout November. You may recognize it as the game that has been on Patreon for some time. They’ve already made their goal of $25,000 and have started into stretch goals.

We’re just under 2 weeks from G-Star when we’re looking forward to hearing about a couple of new MMORPGs. Just have to hold out until then. But you know, this list is massive and there are still tons of games you could be playing until that time.

Take a look at the lists below for more games currently in some stage of testing. Keep an eye out for the new  flag which will show you what was newly added this week.

Shadow’s Kiss Gets Funded and Outlines Stretch Goals

The Shadow’s Kiss crowdfunding drive looks to be a rousing success as the vampiric MMO achieved its full $25k funding goal in under 36 hours. Now with little over a month left in the campaign, naturally the team at Clockwork Throne is looking toward stretch goals – one of which has already been achieved.

shadow's kiss crowdfunding

As of this writing, Shadow’s Kiss sits at just over $31k funding, which unlocks the game’s first stretch goal: crafting. As one would expect, the crafting system will let players gather up reagents and other materials to craft weapons, talismans, and consumables. Those who have backed the game at any tier that included a Lair will have access to a crafting station.

Additional stretch goals have been detailed in an infographic on the campaign’s page. The next up is the Ritual Magic system, which will let players collect components in the world to learn new magic spells. The Ritual Magic system will be possible if crowdfunding hits the $40k milestone.

Previously revealed mini-factions have also been assigned their own funding milestone locations. Described as “prestige stretch goals”, these playable alternate character choices are explained as “big and expensive” additions that “aren’t critical to the core vampire game, but will add a lot of fun and diversity to the experience”. Specifically, the magic-using Adepts will be unlocked at $100k, the resurrected slayer Revenants will be opened at $150k, and the Loupgarou werewolves unlock at $250k.

Our Thoughts

Considering how swiftly Shadow’s Kiss hit its initial funding goal, we have to wonder whether CCP Games is kicking themselves over dropping the Vampire: The Masquerade ball in favor of more VR games. Regardless, our congratulations to the Clockwork Throne team and here’s hoping that the Loupgarou get unlocked…because I wanna be a werewolf.

Vampiric MMO Shadow’s Kiss Arrives to Kickstarter

Are you thirsty for a multiplayer title that lets you live out your un-life as a vampire? Then you perhaps might be interested in the vampiric MMO Shadow’s Kiss, a new Kickstarter project that launched today. Just in time for Halloween.

vampiric mmo shadow's kiss

You might remember Shadow’s Kiss from a story we ran last year, but here’s a refresher. Shadow’s Kiss is a project pieced together by indie studio Clockwork Throne, which is made up of a team with combined 17 years of MMO experience, including work on such titles as Pirates of the Burning Sea, Wizard 101, and Crowfall.

Players can create their own vampiric avatar by selecting their look, story motivations, and even their appearance when they transform. The type of vampire a player can be ranges from the classic “true” vampire to an incubus/succubus to even a zombie-commanding Verdilak. In either case, Vampire’s Kiss emphasizes a “classless” system.

Combat in Shadow’s Kiss is turn-based, granting players the opportunity to consider their moves, including those of diplomacy. Influence is also important in the world of Shadow’s Kiss, as players can make enemies or allies with a variety of in-game factions.

Shadow’s Kiss is asking for $25k, with the majority of the funds being put to game programming, world building, and story and lore. Stretch goals are also being offered in the form of “mini-factions” that will be playable but not have quite as much content as vampiric player characters. These additional factions include the Loupgarou werewolf and the magic-wielding Adept.

More details about Shadow’s Kiss, including backer tiers and a video detailing the game, can be found on Kickstarter

Our Thoughts

Clockwork Throne is right: there is no vampire fantasy MMO out there, and the ideas being laid out by Shadow’s Kiss are definitely intriguing. Considering the project is more than halfway funded, there’s a good chance we’ll be seeing this game make its way to greater development and we’ll certainly be keeping our eyes peeled.
