Overwatch Opens Blizzard World and Adds New Cosmetics

You’ve likely been seeing all of the reveals over the past week with regards to the latest Overwatch cosmetic update, and now the time to pray to the RNG Gods is upon us. The newest patch for the online FPS brings a wealth of new looks, new sprays, and the new Blizzard World hybrid map.

overwatch cosmetic update

The new update brings on over 100 new items, including Legendary skins for heroes such as Doomfist, D.Va, Orisa, Widowmaker, and Lucio among others. There are also Epic skins for heroes like Junkrat and Reaper, along with some new emotes, new sprays, and a variety of new highlight intros.

It should be clarified that the new items are being added to the game’s existing loot box offerings and are not part of any special events, so getting these skins will be subject to the same luck – good or bad – whenever you open standard crates in-game.

As far as the actual gameplay part of Overwatch, the new Blizzard World map has also arrived with the update, full of references to Blizzard IPs past and present. The map is said to feature high ground zones and flanking routes to consider along with environmental hazards.

If your luck is anything like ours when it comes to RNG, you can take a look at several of the new cosmetics in the collected montage trailer below.

Our Thoughts

Yep, Kitty D.Va is now a thing. Naturally, we’re excited to see so many cosmetics added with this update, particularly to what many consider to be “less loved” characters on the skins front. We hope players have good luck opening those crates and craft strategies on the new map!

Heroes of the Storm Goes Mecha Anime with New Skins

We’ve seen League of Legends dip its toes into the magical girl anime subgenre with the Star Guardians, and now some newly-revealed Heroes of the Storm mecha skins are joining in on the fun with a variety of looks styled after mecha anime.

heroes of the storm mecha skins

The skins in question introduce sleek, high-tech looks for Abathur, Dehaka, Rehgar, and Tyrael, transforming each character into either full-on mecha suits or “xenotech”, depending on the character, with a total of 10 new skins are being introduced. The mecha-styled updates are more than just skin-deep, as the new skins also add new voice packs and upgraded visual effects to the selected heroes.

Skins are available either separately or in new bundles including the selected character unlock and related skins. There’s also a Mecha Tyrael announcer and mecha-themed sprays and emojis available for fans as well.

Players can either head to the game’s site or head to the Featured tab in the in-game Collection to see these skins. But before you do, make sure you take in this bad-ass MechaStorm anime trailer below.

Our Thoughts

…eh, why not? Anything that promotes a sense of free-wheeling fun we’re all for, and if this MechaStorm series of skins takes off into its own canon and special events like the Star Guardians have in LoL, then we are 100% for it. Especially if it means we see more amazing animated features like the one above!

Overwatch League Skins Set to Go On Sale

In a recent video from Overwatch League commissioner Nate Nanzer, it was revealed that fans will get their chance to both show their team pride and support the League itself directly with the sale of Overwatch League skins for every character in the game.

Nanzer announced that the skins will become available for purchase sometime in early 2018. All 12 inaugural team skins will be available to buy, with variants for the full Overwatch roster available. Nanzer also mentioned that buying the skins will provide monetary support for teams in the league much like purchasing jerseys for traditional sports teams.

In order to ensure that the right amount of support goes to the league teams, League skins will only be purchasable with a unique currency known as League Tokens.

During the first month of the skins’ release, every player on every platform will be granted enough League Tokens to purchase their very first team skin. Specific dates on the release of these skins was not yet provided, but we can likely expect them to arrive sometime before the Overwatch League’s opening week which starts on Wednesday, January 10th.

Check out Nanzer’s announcement in the video below.

Our Thoughts

Merchandise for the Overwatch League certainly makes sense, especially if the proceeds for said merchandise will help fund each of the league’s teams. We’re definitely looking forward to seeing these skins go on sale and are especially excited for the start of the inaugural Overwatch League season!
