Skyforge New Horizons Expansion Launches Today

Today is the day Skyforge New Horizons, the free expansion, for the game releases. For the first time ever in Skyforge an expansion will take players to an entirely new planet, Terra. Terra is a world of ruined, overgrown cities with lush jungles and lifeless wastelands. Here players will encounter dangerous wildlife and an all-new race.

The expansion begins when scouting drones intercept messages in an unknown language. Later the drones capture strange-looking ships with advanced technology. Looking at the world it would appear that some sort of advanced warfare is taking place there as air pollution levels in some areas exceed safe limits many times over.

When players arrive on Terra they will find that the world is shaped by their actions and a new mechanic called Programs will help change the world around them. By upgrading programs researchers back on the home planet can do more research in particular areas and change how it appears. Doing this will unlock story chapters, special missions, and amazing rewards waiting to be uncovered.

To get the servers ready for New Horizons the game will be taken offline today for four hours, from 4 AM PST to 8 AM. If you’re looking for something to do while the servers are down you might be interested in giving the patch notes a look. They’re quite light on the details of the expansion, but they do offer some updates for specific classes as well as the Battle Royale mode.

Today is only the release of New Horizons on PC, it will be available for Playstation 4 tomorrow, on April 10th, and on Xbox One on April 11th. The expansion is free, however, there is a collector’s edition available for €/$ 24.99. The collector’s edition includes 14 days of premium subscription, 500,000 credits, and the Universe Conqueror Halo and Armor, along with a few other useful items.

2018 in Battle Royale Games

There is no denying that 2018 was the year of the Battle Royale. It has dominated just about every conversation about gaming the entire year. For a good reason too, the genre is insanely popular. But, while it has been a great year there have also been more than a few Battle Royale titles shut down. So grab yourself a drink and sit back as we take a look at 2018 in Battle Royale games.

The year had a bit of a rough start as the news came out that H1Z1 had lost 90% of its player base since July 2017. Of course, a lot of the blame for that can be placed on the success of Fortnite and PUBG, so really as far as the genre goes it wasn’t a terrible thing. As the year progressed H1Z1 would go on to have the part of the game that wasn’t a Battle Royale shut down after the game moved to a new internal studio at Daybreak.

This was also the year that Ninja and Drake broke the record on Twitch for the most-viewed stream while playing Fortnite. At its peak, it was watched by 628,000 people around the world. As of this month, Ninja is the most followed Streamer on Twitch. He has more than 12 million followers and each time he streams he averages 53,000 viewers. For those wondering, Ninja started out the year making approximately $500,000 a month from streaming and later told ESPN that he’s now making nearly 7 figures a month. Oh to be Ninja just for a month.

2018 was also the year of lawsuits in the Battle Royale genre. PUBG sued NetEase for copyright infringement with their games Knives Out and Rules of Survival. In turn just a few days later NetEase threatened to sue everyone who wasn’t PUBG because…well, we’re still not really sure what they were thinking about there actually. Basically, their argument boiled down to “you took the idea that we took and made it a little different and hurt the market in doing so.” Which is exactly as stupid as it sounds. PUBG then went and sued Fortnite for plagiarizing its UI and items. Then, because 2018 wasn’t crazy enough already three stars are now suing Fortnite over the sale of emotes of their dances. Backpack Kid, Milly 2, and Alfonso Ribeiro are all going after Fortnite in a move that is seen by many to be nothing more than an attempt at getting some of that sweet Fortnite cash.

Speaking of Fortnite cash, in March Fortnite became the largest free to play console game of all time both in revenue generated and monthly active users. The game is currently sitting at the number 4 spot in terms of monthly revenue for both console and PC games. Towards the end of the year, it looked as though Fortnite had hit its peak in revenue as revenue growth slowed significantly. Of course, when you talk about revenue slowing down you have to take into consideration that Fortnite makes $2 million a day just on iOS. The last number we had was in October stating that Fortnite on iOS made $300 million worldwide just on iOS…in 200 days. Oh to be Epic just for a day.

How are they doing this? Well, according to a study done by Newzoo, Battle Royale players are more likely to spend money on games. In fact, they’re more invested all around than other competitive gamers. They’re more likely to watch esports, spend money, and spend more than 6 hours a week in game. Does that 6 hours a week number feel a bit low to anyone else?

While Fortnite is helping Tim Sweeney live everyone’s dream of swimming in money the Battle Royale genre has suffered a few losses this year. The first Battle Royale to die was Radical Heights, the 80s themed Battle Royale game that was supposed to save Boss Key Studios. Unfortunately what was released was incomplete and, according to those who played it, not all that great. The game closed not long after it was released as the studio collapsed. The result of which made founder CliffyB, of Gears of War fame, declare he would never make another game. He isn’t the first developer to have said this though, so we’ll wait and see if he follows through.

Radical Heights

SOS, upon seeing the massive success of the Battle Royale genre decided to switch gears and transition into a Battle Royale game. It was a complete disaster as none of the fans actually wanted that. So the game was review bombed and it didn’t take long for the game to shut down. They did try to fix things by bringing back the classic game, but for many fans, it was already too late. The Culling 2 was canceled after a less than stellar reception. It was a game that no one really wanted, and even the developers admitted this. Islands of Nyne also recently announced that they can no longer continue to develop the game and it is now in maintenance mode on Steam. The game is free to play and will continue to be available for the time being. With the market being largely dominated by a couple of big games it is an undeniable fact that we will see more Battle Royale games close in 2019, we just have to wait and see which ones it will be.

Much to our surprise, only a few MMOs have jumped on the Battle Royale bandwagon. For a while, those of us at MMOGames feared that every MMO would come out with a Battle Royale mode. Thankfully, at this point only a few have. Skyforge, Mortal Online, Wild West Online, and Ashes of Creation are the most notable. Though you also have it in games like Trove.

Mortal Royale

It was quite a year for the Battle Royale genre and this was barely a look at the surface. There were a vast amount of games we didn’t mention like Rapture Rejects and we didn’t even discuss how many divorces there were because of Fortnite. But now it is time to start looking ahead to 2019. We already know that Planetside Arena is on its way, what else will 2019 bring us? Next week we’ll look at a few predictions.

If you want another look back at 2018 in Battle Royale games take a look at this list of our Battle Royale roundups. They haven’t been running all year, but they will give you a bit of an idea on how the year has gone.

Skyforge Distant Frequencies Update Brings a Techno Bard

If playing a class that wields a Daft Punk-style retro futurist guitar as a weapon in Skyforge sounds like your idea of a good time, then you’re going to love the Distant Frequencies update, which brings on the Soundweaver class.

distanc frequencies update

The Soundweaver is a new support class that wields an axe of a different sort: a futuristic guitar, to be specific. As one would expect out of the Bard archetype, the Soundweaver can both bolster their allies and assault their foes with their (presumably) sweet guitar riffs.

The Distant Frequencies update is also apparently a herald of things to come in the story of Skyforge. The announcement of the update hints at a strange gravitational phenomenon that players will get to explore as part of an expansion that “will contain hints of larger things at play.”

The Distant Frequencies content patch will land on PC December 11th, PlayStation 4 on December 12th, and Xbox One on December 13th.

Our Thoughts

That’s a pretty sweet guitar, not going to lie. We’ll have to wait to know more, but the Soundweaver sounds a bit like every other Bard class that’s ever been created in MMOs. Though that’s not exactly a complaint — there does seem to be an abject lack of classes that rally friends with sweet tunes.

Skyforge to Release New Planet and Adventures in Q4

The fourth quarter of Skyforge looks to be a pretty busy one. According to a Skyforge content roadmap, players of the action MMORPG will be facing a new planet full of new dangers and evidently unexpected allies.

skyforge content roadmap

All of the specifics of these new updates are understandably vague, but the roadmap does confirm the existence of a new planet accessible by space-time wormholes which is home to “a mighty army…under the auspices of a great god who is not yet known to the people of Aelion.”

The post also hints at the arrival of the strongest members of the Mantide race and changes to Adventures that offer new challenges and rewards. There’s also something about a new and unexpected ally showing up at some point.

These content updates are due to arrive in two stages. Stage one, which will involve the powerful Mantides, the new ally and a new event, will arrive in December of this year. Stage two brings changes to Adventures and the new planet full of threats in February of 2019.

Our Thoughts

Two updates don’t sound like a lot, but they do sound like they’re pretty packed with things for players of Skyforge to do. We’re looking forward to learning more about these two content updates in the coming weeks.

Skyforge Announces a Battle Royale Mode

Yep. The MMORPG Skyforge has also succumbed to the siren song of battle royale gaming. Skyforge Battle Royale has been officially announced by the devs, bringing the familiar gameplay of the sub-genre to a new mode from within the original game.

skyforge battle royale

While the avatars of Skyforge are essentially immortal, the battle royale field of Skyforge pretty much eschews that whole notion to make way for the mode’s last person standing gameplay beats. Incidentally, players don’t have to have a character in the original MMORPG to start playing battle royale, letting you hop into the fight from the off.

What hopefully sets Skyforge Battle Royale from the pack, according to the announcement, is the sci-fantasy setting of Skyforge and a focus on class-based gameplay. Players of battle royale will have a choice of 12 different heroes with their own skills to customize around their playstyle. The mode also promises a combat system that should feel familiar to MMO players and will have monsters on the map.

Skyforge Battle Royale will land on PC August 28, PS4 on August 29 and Xbox One on August 30. A cinematic trailer for the mode is below.

Our Thoughts

Okay, so…if this is a mode within the MMO that doesn’t require advancement in the MMO itself, then what would be the carrot on the stick for players of the MMO to enter battle royale? Perhaps we’ll learn more about just why folks would feel enticed to try out Skyforge Battle Royale in future updates, but for now it either is just a fun side diversion or a tacked-on mode to chase a fad, depending on how one looks at it.

Overgrowth Update to Take Over Skyforge in April

The gods and goddesses of Aelion are about to have a pretty severe weed problem in April. My.com has announced the arrival of the Overgrowth update to the action MMO, which will bring a new unlockable plant-powered class to the game and a couple of new additions to the game’s current systems.

overgrowth update

The centerpiece of the Overgrowth content patch is the Grovewalker, a new mage class that is able to bring the power of nature to bear in their attacks including the ability to cover themselves in living armor and transform into giant frontline tanks. Overgrowth is also due to introduce reworks of the game’s story missions and a new challenge system.

Until the update’s arrival, players can busy themselves with a pre-release quest chain that will feature Tessa, the Goddess of Flowers, escaping from a distant planet with an invading force of plant monsters known as the Phytonides hot on her heels.

Overgrowth will be a free release due to arrive on Wednesday, April 11th on PC and Thursday, April 12th on Xbox One and PS4. Early details on what players can expect between now and then are available here, while a lore-filled trailer featuring the backstory of the Grovewalkers is below.

Our Thoughts

We like the idea of being able to turn into a giant, hulking plant monster in order to tank things! Details are a little bit sparse in this announcement overall, but we expect that the devs of Skyforge will be filling in the blanks for fans soon enough.

2018 MMO Recommendations

Are you looking for 2018 MMO recommendations? Maybe you want to leave a recommendation for your favorite game. Whichever the case this is the place to find exactly what you’re looking for. We have all of the hottest MMOs currently on the market and we’re leaving it up to the public to leave a vote on the one they recommend.

What does it take to get on the recommendation list?

  1. The game must be live or out of closed beta testing. This means it’s available for anyone from the public to buy or download.
  2. Maps must allow at least 6 players at a time AND
  3. Allow for the potential of playing with hundreds or thousands of different people through matching or other methods.

This means you’ll find MOBAs, Shooters, and MMORPGs alongside each other. And why not? The definition of MMO is constantly evolving. We will be releasing more recommendation polls like this that are specifically for different genres in the coming weeks, but right now we’re interested in taking a broader look at online gaming.

Skyforge is Coming to Xbox One

Barring a few details, the crux of the news really is that simple. A Skyforge Xbox One launch is imminent, expanding the playerbase of the action MMO to the console in either a regular free-to-play format or with purchase of a bonus pack if one is so inclined.

skyforge xbox one launch

As with the game’s PC and PS4 counterparts, Skyforge will arrive to Xbox One players with all of its usual bells and whistles, including 15 classes, its full Campaign mode, and a variety of PvE and PvP activities as players learn to become literal gods in the sci-fantasy world of Aelion.

For those who really want to show their support for the game or like getting in-game stuff, Skyforge is offering one of three bonus packs which unlock things such as the Berserker or Gunner classes from the very outset, Premium Subscription time, and early access to the game among other goodies. If players buy one of these packs before early access, they’ll receive additional in-game items as well.

Early access for Skyforge will kick off on Friday, November 10th while the game will officially go live and free-to-play on Xbox One on Friday, November 24th.

Our Thoughts

We’re definitely looking forward to hearing how Xbox One players take to the arrival of Skyforge. Are you looking for more MMO options on the console? Are you among the current players of Skyforge who has advice or opinions? Feel free to share with us below.

And if you happen to be playing the game on PS4, be sure you’re entered into our Revenant Pack giveaway for the game!
