Hey, do you remember Raiders of the Broken Planet? The multiplayer shooter MMO thing? Well, remove that name from your mind and replace it with a new one. Developer MercurySteam have decided to reskin the shooter as Spacelords and are now making it a fully free to play title instead.
The new-look game is promising more than just a simple update and monetization switch, though the announcement was short on details on just what that involves beyond saying all aspects of the game will have changes that “go so deep.” Regardless, everyone will get to find out when the free-to-play launch goes live on Thursday, August 23rd.
The shooter’s director Enric Álvarez was pretty succinct with the reasoning behind the shift. “We hoped [Raiders’] low price point of 9.99 per campaign- would open it up to a large number of users, but it didn’t work as we planned,” he says in a statement. “Our vision is to see our game enjoyed by millions of users for years to come and putting all of the game’s rich content into their hands for free is the way to realize it.”
As for those who bought in to the game when it was still Raiders, you’ll be duly compensated. Purchasers of the original title are going to get exclusive content that will not be offered to anyone else. There’s also an FAQ that explains what will happen to vet players once the title makes its switch.
In the meantime, you can get your Monster Magnet on with the trailer below.
The announcement of this change is pretty darn vague on what is going to make this game different from the title it’s metamorphosing from, so perhaps there will be more firm details as we get closer to the free-to-play launch. In the meantime, consider us mildly curious.
