The Age of Discovery Arrives to Star Trek Online Console Nov 13

The wait is nearly over, console Star Trek Online fans. The Age of Discovery console release date has been confirmed for this coming Tuesday, November 13th, bringing all of the shiny new things that PC players have been enjoying for a little while to their platform of choice.

age of discovery console release date

In the off chance you’ve not been keeping track, Age of Discovery brings the Star Trek: Discovery TV series to the MMO, bringing a new tutorial, two new episodes and the character Cadet Sylvia Tilly voiced by actress Mary Wiseman.

The update also brings improvements to everyone playing STO, with a more streamlined mission journal; unlocked level requirements for all missions; new Reputation Tiers; and a new Task Force Operation among other features.

Also just like the PC version, Age of Discovery seeks to lay the groundwork for more Discovery-related content over the next several months, as outlined by a developer roadmap shared earlier this month.

Our Thoughts

We genuinely hope that fans of the game on console enjoy everything that this particular update has to offer. And hey, if you happen to be playing the game on PC and you haven’t entered into our related Age of Discovery ship bundle giveaway, there’s another new chance to do so.

Star Trek Online’s Age of Discovery Gets a PC Launch Date

While the CBS All Access show Star Trek Discovery’s next season isn’t due to arrive for a while yet, Star Trek Online sees no reason to not celebrate the series with its next update. PC players can now mark their calendars for the Age of Discovery launch date of Tuesday, October 9th.

age of discovery launch date

The Age of Discovery lets players start fresh from a new timeline based on the Discovery series’ era, or they can look forward to the addition of new Reputation Tiers, a new Task Force Operation, and a variety of other gameplay features.

The blog heralding the update’s arrival also promises the start of a new story that will have ramifications for the entire MMO. These ramifications will likely play out over the next several planned updates, which are said to bring more characters, starships and locations from Star Trek Discovery into the game.

As for those of you playing Star Trek Online on console, you’ll have to wait until sometime this fall before the Age of Discovery starts on your chosen platform. For now, expect more updates as September wraps up.

Our Thoughts

Ramifications that spread out into the rest of the game, eh? It’d be really nice if people in the world of Star Trek would stop playing heck with space-time so there’s not so much confusion. All kidding aside, we’re very curious to see what this update has to offer and hope fans of STO and Discovery are eager to get started.

A Buffed Crystalline Entity Comes to Star Trek Online Console

You know, it’d almost be pretty if it weren’t for the fact that it also happens to be a life-absorbing sentience. Now, it’s coming to Star Trek Online players on console. It’s the return of the Crystalline Entity event, this time with a somewhat more buffed snowflake for Captains to take on.

crystalline entity event

Between September 13th and October 10th, PS4 and Xbox One players between levels 50-65 can take up the Crystalline Cataclysm event and square off against the Entity. Completing the queue will earn you a Crystal Shard once every 20 hours. Collect 14 of them and you’ll be rewarded with unique weapons, Dilithium Ore and Marks. After that, players can continue to join the queue to earn additional Dilithium Ore and Marks.

As mentioned before, this version of the Crystalline Entity confrontation has a number of changes. Most notably, Entity shards are now immune to control effects; the Entity will be immune to all damage during its Absorption phase; and Small Shards won’t buff the Entity’s damage for the entire encounter, instead building buff stacks towards its Energy Release attack.

If you’d like to learn more about the event queue, then be sure to read here for the full details.

Our Thoughts

It will be interesting to know if Star Trek Online players will find these adjustments to the Crystalline Entity fight enough to make it more challenging. That said, we also hope that it doesn’t feel like too much of a grind for those looking to unlock those goodies.

Star Trek Online Announces the Age of Discovery Update

The game has traveled to where it all began. It’s gone through the Next Generation. And, more recently, it’s gone through Deep Space Nine. So reason would stand that Star Trek Online would focus on the current series, Star Trek: Discovery. And that’s just what’s happening with the Age of Discovery update.

age of discovery update

The Age of Discovery update is set in the year 2256, just after a brutal war with the Klingons. With the Alpha Quadrant under threat from J’Ula, matriarch of the House of Mo’Kai and sister of T’Kuvma, new Starfleet Academy cadets will need to rely on fellow cadet Sylvia Tilly to see them off to their first mission and into new missions beyond.

The Age of Discovery update will let players start a new Federation captain in the timeline of the Star Trek: Discovery series, where fans can expect to see familiar locations from the show like the Dilithium Mines of Corvan II, the interior of the Crossfield class Starship the U.S.S. Glenn and more.

Existing players will also get two new episodes based on Discovery, a Task Force Operation to defend Starbase 1, and a sixth tier to the Reputation system for more powerful rewards. Additionally, the update will see actress Mary Wiseman reprise her role as cadet Sylvia Tilly.

Star Trek Online: Age of Discovery is set to arrive some time in the fall, with PC players getting the content first and console players shortly after. A trailer announcing the newest update can be seen below.

Our Thoughts

We’re curious whether enough people will want to start a fresh captain in Star Trek Online to experience the Discovery arc, but ultimately that’s a bit of a moot point when there’s other things arriving in this update for all players of the game to do. We’re looking forward to hearing more about this next chapter in the MMO’s saga!

Star Trek Online: Victory is Life Console Launch Announced

The headline just about says it all, but the point does bear a bit of repeating. A calendar date for the Victory is Life console launch has been officially confirmed, letting PS4 and Xbox One Captains of Star Trek Online get their DS9 adventure on.

victory is life console launch

Tuesday, July 24th will bring console players of STO to the Gamma Quadrant and into the conflict against the Hur’q. As most STO fans are already familiar, the new expansion reunites 12 of the original cast members of Deep Space Nine, along with a new Battlezone and the new Jem’Hadar playable faction along with the continuing storyline from the game.

If you’re perhaps unfamiliar with the new Gamma Quadrant Battlezone, the devs have very kindly put out a blog detailing how it works. As you’re flying in this sector of space, you’ll see alerts about hot spots where the Hur’q are attacking. Engaging in these operations will offer progress for everyone in the sector and the more that take part, the more progress is earned.

Of course, taking on angry internet spaceships isn’t the only reward. Completing these operations will grant players personal rewards as well as bonuses depending on how frequently they take part in these Battlezone engagements. Rewards include experience, expertise, Gamma marks, and dilithium.

Our Thoughts

Not much more that we can elaborate on here, honestly. Victory is Life is here for console players and we hope those players have a good time. We suppose the only additional thought we could come up with is how the actors who played Ferengi managed to work with all of that makeup.

Star Trek Online: Victory is Life Release Date Announced for PC

It was a matter of time, of course, before we got a final Star Trek Online: Victory is Life release date. And now, we know that date to be Tuesday, June 5th for PC players, opening up the Gamma Quadrant, the crew of Deep Space Nine, and the threat of the Hur’q.

victory is life release date

Victory is Life, of course, features the much-ballyhooed members of the original DS9 cast, including Armin Shimerman, Nana Visitor, and ten other members of the original show’s cast. It also features a new Jem’hadar playable faction that starts life at level 60, a level cap raise to 65 – the first in the game for four years – and the new Gamma Quadrant battlezone where groups of players can take on the Hur’q to liberate planets in the region.

A video from the developers of Star Trek Online breaking down these new features was released yesterday, which you can see below.

Our Thoughts

Here’s hoping that everything coming with Victory is Life ends up being enjoyable for fans of this MMO. We suspect there are more than a few DS9 fans that are eager to hop into a storyline that features some of their favorite characters, so we wish everyone the best once this expansion lands on June 5th.

Monthly Subscriptions Are Going Away in Star Trek Online

Let’s say you like Star Trek Online enough to want to buy a regular subscription for the game. Well, you’ll just have to show your monetary support with the new Star Trek Online Elite Starter Pack instead, a new one-time purchase that is replacing the game’s monthly sub fee entirely.

star trek online elite starter pack

The Elite Starter Pack will grant you a new character slot, 20 shared bank slots, 5 Captain Retrain Tokens and an increase on your Energy Credit cap to 2 billion Energy Credits. Once the item is purchased, an Elite Starter Pack Reclaim item will appear that lets every character on your account get 30 inventory slots, 60 bank slots and 2 Bridge Officer slots. All of this is at the cost of 1500 Zen.

As mentioned in the lead-in to this story, this is a one-time purchase that unlocks all of the above benefits permanently to your account and does not need to be purchased on a monthly basis.

Additionally, those who are already monthly or lifetime subscribers to STO will still get all of the benefits those programs offered, including Veteran Rewards and Bonus Zen. Furthermore, this new purchase means that the Tribble test server will remove the subscriber-only restriction, though future test builds may have restrictions added at a later time.

The change to subscriptions is already in effect and is specific to PC players. More details and an FAQ can be found on the STO official website.

Our Thoughts

That’s remarkably generous of the devs, though we also have to wonder what this means for the STO cash shop from here on out. Ideally, this will mean that the MMO will remain generally open and without a significantly heavy cash shop anchor for Elite Pack buyers and free players alike.

Star Trek Online’s Next Expansion Revealed

Perfect World has pulled back the curtain on the newest expansion for their Star Trek MMO, and this time it’s taking us into Deep Space Nine. Star Trek Online: Victory is Life will bring Captains to the eponymous space station, along with the addition of a new playable faction, a new level cap and a lot more.

star trek online: victory is life

The Gamma Quadrant of known space will soon open up in Victory is Life as players will investigate what remains of the Deep Space Nice space station after an attack by the Hur’q, the enemy race which was unveiled in the latest episode. In this new series of stories, fans can look forward to returning members of the cast of DS9 as voiced by the show’s original actors, including Quark (Armin Shimerman), Odo (René Auberjonois), Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor), Martok (J.G. Hertzler) and others.

Victory is Life will also add the playable Jem’Hadar faction. This group of super-soldiers genetically engineered by the Dominion will start life at level 60 and have acces to a number of completed Reputations, Specialization Trees, Duty Officer tracks, and R&D progress.

If you’re not otherwise interested in starting at level 60 or have a Captain you’re already attached to, then you can look forward to a level cap raise of 65, which comes with a new queue, an additional progression system and all-new Sector Battlezone. There are more features being teased as well, but those will get detailed further closer to launch.

Speaking of launch, Victory is Life is due to land on PC in June of 2018 and on consoles at some point afterwards. A teaser trailer for the new expansion can be seen below.

Our Thoughts

That is a lot of new stuff for Star Trek Online players! We’re sure fans are going to be happy to see the crew of DS9 make a return, even if they’re doing so under what appears to be less-than-ideal circumstances. Here’s to more details soon!

Star Trek Online Prepares to Celebrate Eight Years

It’s never too early to celebrate a birthday party! That’s (probably) (not) the thinking behind an announcement today heralding the upcoming Star Trek Online eighth anniversary event, which will celebrate the game’s 161 episodes, three major expansions and 14 seasons’ worth of content.

star trek online eight anniversary

Starting from now until the official kickoff of the in-game anniversary event on January 23rd, players can visit the in-game C-Store for server-wide giveaways. These giveaways include prizes such as starships, uniforms and more.

After that, the next episode in the ongoing struggle against the Tzenkethi begins on the 23rd. “Scylla and Charybdis” will pit players against the murderous empire in the Alpha Quadrant. The episode will once more feature LeVar Burton as Captain Geordi LaForge along with a hinted-at “unexpected ally”.

The planned update will also bring re-engineering feature that lets players change mods on their existing weapons, the return of the Omega Molecule Stabilization event that can yield a new T6 Bajoran Interceptor reward, and some celebratory party poppers. STO will also be holding a contest on social media to win a year subscription to the Star Trek Mission Crate from LootCrate.

The events in question are for PC players, though console players will get to join in the festivities at a date to be announced. For now, you can look back at eight years of Star Trek Online with the devs in the video below.

Our Thoughts

Happy early anniversary to Star Trek Online! Eight years is no small feat and we’re hoping that fans of the MMO enjoy everything coming to them in-game from now until the next episode.
