Games Like World of Warcraft in 2019

For more than a decade now World of Warcraft has dominated the MMORPG genre and helped shape the development of the entire genre. But nothing gold can stay. The bad news is that there are very few AAA MMORPGs being developed anymore. The good news is that there are still quite a few amazing ones out there you can play right now. Below is a list of games like World of Warcraft that you can download and jump into right now. It isn’t in any particular order, we wanted to mix in a variety of options to try to cover what everyone might be looking for. We did a similar list back in 2015 but felt it was time to give the topic another look.

Final Fantasy XIV

ffxiv anniversary

Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV) may very well be the best MMORPG that is currently available on the market. It has had three amazing expansions, the most recent being Shadowbringers in July 2019. Shadowbringers was praised by many fans of the game to be the best MMORPG expansion there has ever been. On Metacritic the expansion has a critic score of 91 (out of 100) and a user score of 8.9 (Out of 10). This puts it in the number one spot for best PC game of 2019 on Metacritic.

Something that makes FFXIV stand out from other MMORPGs is that you are able to level all classes and jobs on one character. So, if you’re the type of person who enjoys trying out everything you won’t have to roll up a new character to do it. On the other hand, if you like having a lot of alts FFXIV may not be for you. This is a dungeon-based game and getting through the storyline will require you to complete dungeons.

Tera is a fantasy MMORPG that came out in North America and Europe in 2012, then released on consoles worldwide in April 2018. It uses action combat and a non-target battle system. This basically means that you have to make sure you’ve got your enemy in front of you in the cross-hair cursor in order to execute an attack. For anyone who is used to the old fashioned tab targeting that is usually found in MMOs this can be a difficult hurdle to overcome. Those that do get past it enjoy Tera for its many unique and interesting classes and the constant updates that are coming to the game despite its age. It’s clear that Tera still has many more years of life left in it so don’t let its age scare you away.

Guild Wars 2

Guild Wars 2 is without a doubt the most beautiful MMORPG there has ever been. It is absolutely gorgeous and the developers at ArenaNet know it. Fashion is a big part of the Guild Wars 2 experience, so much so that the game has the nickname Fashion Wars. It is broadly considered a more casual friendly MMO than most but that doesn’t mean there aren’t challenges to be found. It’s a great game if you prefer to play your MMOs solo. The story is designed with a solo player in mind but there are still tons of opportunities for groups to play together too.

So far, Guild Wars 2 has had 2 expansions but it also gets content updates every 3 months. These include a brand new zone, another part in the ongoing story, and lots of beautiful weapon skins It also has a lively PvP scene with two different types of PvP to pick from.

For many MMO players today Runescape was their first love. The game has been around since 2001, making it even older than World of Warcraft. But, just because it’s nearly 20 years old doesn’t mean it is slowing down or that it looks 20 year old. It has had a number of updates over the years as technology has advanced.

Runescape isn’t for everyone though. The game puts a big emphasis on grinding which can be really unattractive to a lot of people. A lot of people also say that the community isn’t very newbie friendly. Which can be quite difficult to overcome if you’re looking for a communal experience from your MMORPG.

Blade & Soul

Midnight Skypetal Plains Raid

Blade & Soul is sometimes called the World of Warcraft of Asia and despite its massive popularity in the East it rarely grabs headlines in the West. Which is unfortunate because it is a very good game that is a blast to play. It has been so popular in Asia that it had a 13 episode anime series adaptation. There is also an incredibly popular mobile version of the game. It stands out on this list for being more martial arts focused with classes like Kung Fu Master, Zen Archer, and Blade Master. If you’re looking for a completely unfamiliar MMORPG experience then give Blade & Soul a try.

Elder Scrolls Online

Despite its rough launch Elder Scrolls Online has gone on to become one of the most successful and most popular MMORPGs on the market right now. It is without a doubt one of the top 3 MMORPGs you can play right now. It is full of content that is accessible to both groups and solo players alike. It is still getting regular content updates with new expansions and DLC. For those familiar with Tamriel and the Elder Scrolls universe, the game takes place a millennium before Skyrim, 800 years before the events of Morrowind and Oblivion. If you’re looking for an MMORPG that is guaranteed to still have a long life ahead of itself then ESO may be the game for you. In a recent panel at PAX Australia ESO’s Creative Director said that Zenimax is planning to continue to support the game for a long time and that they have development plans through 2020 and beyond.

When it launched Rift was aiming to be a WoW killer and they weren’t shy about it with their advertising either. It is perhaps the most World of Warcraft like MMORPG that’s on the market without being a Chinese clone. Unfortunately it has had its share of struggles through the years and it has been relatively quiet since Gamigo bought it and developer Trion Worlds in October 2018. However, the core game and its expansions do still exist and it is all extremely playable. The playerbase may not be what it once was, but for a game that is 8 years old and has moved on to an entirely new developer it is still going strong.

Tera and PUBG Crossover Event Announced

A month-long Tera and PUBG crossover event has been announced for Tera on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. During the event, you’ll be able to earn and unlock exclusive themed costumes and pets as well as getting daily login bonuses for the entire duration of the event. Of course, the sick rewards aren’t the only things you’ll find in Tera during the event. Tera players can look forward to dropping in and engaging PUBG-style BAMs. What that looks like beyond this one BAM, well we’ll just have to wait and see.

Decorative jeeps and planes will be littered around Highwatch and players will need to keep their eyes open for PUBG-themed consumables and air drops. While there will be things to grab and BAMs to take down the event is being labeled as a dungeon event so expect to do some dungeon diving too.

So if you need to gear up your Popori with a welder’s mask and a frying pan (and let’s be honest, everyone needs a frying pan) be sure to log in to Tera every day starting on March 5th.

Sadly for PUBG players, there isn’t a crossover event with TERA yet but I think it’s safe to say we all hope to get some of those amazing Castanic looks in PUBG. Or maybe that’s just me. If one does get announced we’ll be sure to update this post.

Crossover events like these are pretty common for studios with multiple online titles like Bluehole who run both Tera and PUBG. They’re fun, though a little bit immersion breaking at times. Of course, that isn’t a problem for Tera who already has things like comical little police cars and Hello Kitty items.

If you want more information about the Tera and PUBG crossover event check out the trailer below and the announcement on the official site.

Tera’s Level Cap Increasing in Early 2019

En Masse is looking ahead at the development plan for 2019 and it looks Tera’s level cap will be increased from 65 to 70 in March. Of course, along with it will come new quests because you have to level up somehow. They’ll also be introducing an all-new world boss system to go with the higher level cap. That update in March is being called V80, and it isn’t the first one of the year.

The fun all starts in January with the release of V79. This update will be all about class and skill balancing along with a ton of PvP changes. Battlegrounds will get updates and so will skills and PvP equipment. This update is going to be released on January 15th and hopefully, by then it’ll have a cool name.

In February Tera will host events for Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day. They also anticipate there being some events to help prepare everyone for the big update in March.

All of this was announced in a blog post on Tera’s official site title 2019 PC Roadmap, Part 1. We’ll most likely get another roadmap in March as their current plans come to an end and it’s time to look ahead to what comes next.

If you’re looking for something new to do in Tera right now there is, of course, Wintera taking place. But, if that isn’t your thing you might want to check out the newly launched fishing feature. Alternatively, you could check out the complete overhaul they just did to their gathering and crafting system. Though let’s be honest, fishing is addictive no matter what game it’s in and once you find yourself a sweet spot to fish in you’re not going to move for days…oh, am I the only one that does that?

TERA Brings Deathwrack Update to Console Oct 30

The end of this month will see another update brought to TERA‘s console edition. This time it’s the Deathwrack update, which has gotten its release date of October 30th and a few preliminary details to whet fan appetites.

deathwrack update

As often seems to be the case for TERA updates, the Deathwrack update will introduce two new-to-console dungeons in the forms of Velik’s Hold and Broken Prison, along with associated Misery and Deathwrack equipment sets to collect.

The update will also bring some guild vs. guild PvP battles, customizable skill chain options, and a variety of skill updates for the Warrior class.

Further information on what the Deathwrack update is bringing to TERA console is likely to be released in the weeks leading up to the October 30th launch. For now, there’s a cinematic trailer teasing some of the bosses waiting in the upcoming dungeons, which can be seen below.

Our Thoughts

Not a terribly surprising update, considering the span between PC content patches and console ones, but it’s still nice to see such a steady stream of content arrive to TERA on PS4 and Xbox One. Here’s hoping that the dungeons arriving this update will indeed provide the challenge players want.

TERA Brings Apex Skills and Dungeons in Dark Reaches Update

Players of TERA can now reach new heights of power and flex that power in some new encounters. The Dark Reaches PC update for the MMO has introduced the much-ballyhooed Apex Skills for its classes and added two new dungeons.

dark reaches pc update

Archer, Gunner, Ninja, Reaper, Sorcerer and Valkyrie players now have access to their Apex Skills, which promise to add new combat role specializations and new ways to experience your favorite class. To begin, players must be level 65 and item level 439, at which point they can take up the Velika Banquet quest at Highwatch to begin.

Naturally, a rise in skill power means you’ll need tougher enemy faces to unleash those skills upon, and the Dark Reaches update delivers there, too. Two new dungeons are available: the Dark Reach Citadel, where players can unmask the leader of the Red Raiders and learn about a secret faction within the group; and the Grotto of Lost Souls, where players must try to foil the plans of that secret faction’s leader.

Dark Reaches also offers up a system that lets veteran players mentor new or returning folks and get “compliments”, an enhanced UI meant to be faster and more intuitive, and the opening of the Harvest Festival Hall for Halloween. All of the details, including vignettes of the new Apex Skills and more, can be found here.

Our Thoughts

We have to say, a lot of those new Apex Skills look pretty devastating. Particularly the ones used by the Valkyrie. Here’s to the hope that PC players of TERA enjoy everything new this patch.

For the first time, players on Fallen Gate will get to join in the Nights of the Dead festivities in Everquest II. There’s a new collection to tackle, new items for crafters, and new merchant items to grab. From the looks of it, the event won’t have anything new to do this year though.

Final Fantasy XIV              All Saints’ Wake                Oct 18 – Nov 1

The Continental Circus is back once again and this year there’s a new masquerade for players to experience. Paragon Chat (City of Heroes Emu)           Halloween          Oct 5- Oct 31

TERA Console Celebrates Halloween All October Long

I freaking love Halloween. It’s my spooky Christmas. If I had the chance, I would love to be somewhere where the season is that way all the time. Which means perhaps a visit to TERA on console might be a good idea, as there’s a TERA Halloween celebration that takes up the whole month.

tera halloween

From now until November 1st, players of TERA on PS4 and Xbox One can participate in the Halloween Festival Hall dungeon event, where players must use Halloween Cannons to defend a giant basket of candy from marauding monsters. Completion of this instance rewards Halloween Candy currency which can be used to buy a variety of thematic cosmetics, a special Pet Boo pet, and the Groundshaker mount.

The in-game store will also be getting into the Halloween spirit every week in October, with special costume packages on offer. This week, it’s the Devilicious and Titan Force costumes. The next three weeks will bring police and nurse costumes, cowgirl and wrestler costumes, and glowing skeleton and mummy costumes respectively.

For those who’d like to know what goodies they can buy themselves from the Halloween dungeon, you can find that out here.

Our Thoughts

Here’s hoping that the grind to get those items isn’t too long…or if it is, here’s hoping that the Halloween event dungeon is entertaining enough to withstand multiple runs. In any case, I genuinely love Halloween and we hope that everyone participating has a spooky good time.

TERA Announces the Dark Reaches Update

TERA is at it again with yet another content update for the action MMO. This time around they’ve unveiled the Dark Reaches update, providing early details of what to expect and kicking off a variety of events in the lead-up to its release.

dark reaches update

The highlight of the Dark Reaches update will be the arrival of Apex skills to the remaining classes of the MMO. There will be other features of this update as well, but details on that will only arrive in the next couple of weeks.

In order to get players ready for these new heights of power, the next three weeks will feature a variety of in-game events. These “Reach Your Apex” events start today with a number of rewards for various level milestones, culminating in a box that grants your character free high-level Twistshard gear.

The event will have two more stages on October 2nd and 9th respectively and will run all the way until the Dark Reaches update goes live on Tuesday, October 16th for PC. There will also be additional reveals for the patch’s content; you can keep track of everything at this site.

Our Thoughts

Anything that makes the level grind in an MMO easier is just fine by us, especially if the vast majority of your game’s experiences await at the top end. We’re looking forward to learning more about this new update and hope that players of TERA can power their way to max level effectively with the help of this in-game event.

TERA’s Next PC Update Gets a Release Date

The PC edition of TERA keeps on keepin’ on with yet another new content update in its regular monthly cadence. Happily Evil After is the name of this new patch and the devs have offered up details on what to expect and when to expect it.

happily evil after

In Happily Evil After, players will once more have to face off against the foes of the Shadow Sanguinary dungeon, which has seen some new enhancements as well as a bunch of new rewards. Clearing through the revamped dungeon and other high-level encounters will also award players with materials needed to craft Ethereal accessories.

The new update will also bring a variety of bug fixes and adjustments that have been reportedly requested by the community, though specifics on just what those fixes are was not included in the announcement.

Finally, Happily Evil After will also introduce a wide variety of pets in the image of Lord Dakuryon, each with different benefits ranging from auto-gathering and auto-looting to giving you HP or MP healing items when your meters fall below a certain point.

Happily Evil After will arrive on Thursday, September 13th. There’s a little bit of information on what’s coming at this landing site.

Our Thoughts

While not a particularly beefy update for TERA PC, we also have to appreciate the regular monthly updates this action MMO is getting. Here’s hoping that this newly revamped dungeon provides both ample challenge and reward to those who decide to take it on.

The Ninja Sneaks to TERA Console September 18

You either love the fact that they’re dodgy and wooshy or hate the fact that they’re Elin specific, but either way the TERA Ninja class is making its way to the console version of the action MMO on September 18th, bringing all of its guile and evasiveness while also wielding an impossibly huge shuriken somehow.

tera ninja class

Using hit-and-run tactics, evasive skills and the ability to channel her Chi into fiery blasts, the Ninja relies on the ability to avoid damage and juggle targets to cleave single or multiple targets. The Ninja does wear cloth armor, though, so quick reaction and deft avoidance will be key in playing the class effectively in PvE and PvP.

The Ninja’s arrival continues to tick boxes on TERA’s console update roadmap, which will also see new guild features arriving to the console MMO this month. The announcement did not specify if the Ninja update will also carry these features as well, however.

For now, players can read up on the Ninja on TERA’s website as well as see the class in action in the video showcase below.

Our Thoughts

Let’s all try to ignore the race lock of the class for a moment and just appreciate the fact that the Ninja class definitely seems to be one of the best uses of TERA’s form of action combat. We suspect all of the combos this class can pull off will feel leagues better on a console game pad than it does on keyboard and mouse.
