Sea of Thieves Has Been Played By 10 Million People

Rare and Xbox took to the internet today to announce that Sea of Thieves has been played by 10 million people since its launch. That makes it the most successful new IP from Xbox this generation. When you remember that the game hasn’t even been out for 2 years yet, that’s a pretty impressive feat. The announcement was made on the Xbox website by Executive Producer Joe Neate. The full text of the announcement can be seen below.

We’re excited and humbled to share that Sea of Thieves has now been played by more than ten million players, reinforcing its status as the most successful new IP from Xbox this generation.

It’s mind-blowing to think of that many people setting sail on the Sea of Thieves, and it’s all been made possible by the support and passion of our fantastic community.

For everyone at Rare, the Sea of Thieves community represents the very best of what gaming can be. It’s home to players from more than eighty different countries, bringing together gamers on Xbox Game Pass, Xbox One and Windows 10 PC and creating countless stories and moments that people can treasure. Seeing these stories shared through social media or other community spaces is something that inspires the team every day. To every person who’s played Sea of Thieves, thank you.

Our community will be at the centre of our January update – ‘Legends of the Seas’ – which will be available to all players for free from Wednesday January 15. Not only will this update celebrate our community and its stories, it will also feature two limited-edition gifts to mark our 10 million player milestone. Log-in to the game between January 15 and 22 and claim a free custom sail and a special new emote.

Once again, on behalf of everyone at Rare I’d like to say thank you to everyone who’s been on this journey with us so far. The best news is that we’re just getting started and have big plans for the coming year. See you on the seas!

E3 2019: Lord of the Rings Adventure Card Game Launches August 8th

We mentioned it in our roundup of multiplayer games at the Xbox Press Conference, a brief glimpse of a Lord of the Rings card game that got only a few seconds of attention. Now we finally have more information about the game. As it turns out Lord of the Rings Adventure Card Game is the first adventure card game based in the world of J.R.R. Tolkien and it has been around a while. It was first introduced on Steam back in 2017. Then in late 2018, it started Early Access where it has been and will continue to be until August 8th when the game officially launches. But, this isn’t a Steam exclusive. You’ll be able to play it on Xbox One, Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Steam.

The game right now has 3 different campaign modes with more than 35 hours of gameplay. There are more than 150 cards to play with and more is already in the works. There are 2 free encounters available and there are more planned post-launch. They’re already working on more campaign modes as well. The game can be played solo or co-op.

The Lord of the Rings Adventure Card Game will also be featured in the ever-growing library of games with the Xbox Game Pass. The game officially launches on August 8th, but if you want to play on PC you can head over to Steam and pick it up right now. Be sure to check out the E3 trailer which you can find below.

E3 2019: Xbox Press Conference

E3 got off to a hell of a start and if I’m totally honest I feel ok declaring here and now that the Xbox E3 2019 Press Conference was the best we’re going to see this year. Yep! Pack it up boys, we’re done here. Nevermind that we’re only getting started. We picked out just the online and multiplayer games and we’ve got the info about them below plus the trailers.

Bleeding Edge

Need a new 4v4 game in your life with some really unique looking characters? Of course you do! Ninja Theory debuted Bleeding Edge, a 4v4 third-person melee combat game. It looks and feels a lot like Overwatch if we’re being perfectly honest. Technical alpha for this game starts on June 27th. The game will be available on Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

Minecraft Dungeons

It looks like someone developing Minecraft played some Trove and loved the idea so much they did it for themselves. Yes, Minecraft Dungeons is exactly what it says on the tin. You go in some Minecraft style dungeons. It’s a 4 player co-op RPG with local and online multiplayer. The game will be playable starting Spring 2020.

Cyberpunk 2077

The biggest highlight of the night was easily when Keanu Reeves came out on stage to fans cheering around the world for him. He’s going to be in Cyberpunk 2077 which will release on April 16th, 2020. Yes! We finally have a release date for this game we’ve been waiting for years to play. The game is available for pre-order now, including a collector’s edition with a number of collectibles, including a 10-inch statue of the game’s Protagonist, V. Along with bringing Keanu Reeves out on stage we saw an all-new cinematic trailer that reveals one of the key characters, Keanu Reeves himself…as Johnny Silverhand.

Lord of the Rings Living Card Game

While they were quickly going through a few different indie games, in a blink and you’ll miss it type of moment we saw Lord of the Rings Living Card Game. What is it? Well, other than a card game we just don’t know yet. But we’re going to be keeping an eye out for it so watch this space.

Phantasy Star Online 2

It isn’t every day you see hype for an 8-year-old game. But with Phantasy Star Online 2 FINALLY coming to the West that’s exactly what we saw during Xbox E3 2019. Fans of the original have been waiting for this for a VERY long time…and now they have to wait a little longer. Phantasy Star Online 2 is coming to the West early 2020 and it will be free to play! Add this to our must play list for next year!

Project Scarlett

The moment we were all waiting for came at the very end when the next generation of Xbox was announced, currently called Project Scarlett. For the record, they missed out on a hell of a trick by not getting Scarlet Johannson involved in the announcement for this. As you would expect it’s the most powerful, most gamey game machine that ever game machined. Oh yeah, and it’s launching with a new Halo game, because of course it is. Project Scarlett is coming just in time for the holiday season in 2020 and Halo Infinite will be right there with it!

Xbox Has Its Own Fragrance Line Coming Soon

Ever want to smell like an Xbox? No, not like the Red Ring of Death, but like, well, a gaming experience. Well, here’s your chance. Today, Lynx revealed that it has teamed up with Microsoft to reveal a line of Xbox fragrance products. Yep, you heard that right. Soon, you’ll be able to clean yourself up with Xbox cleaning products, and you won’t even need an Xbox Live membership.

Xbox fragrance

The line-up is called Lynx Xbox, and it will consist of products that include body spray, deodorant and shower gel. The products will be available sometime this year, and it will contain a series of “delightful” scents that will appeal to everyone. Even PlayStation fans, apparently.

“Lynx Xbox is a fresh scent of pulsing green citrus, featuring top notes of kaffir lime and winter lemon, aromatic herbal middle notes of mint and sage, and woody bottom notes of patchouli and clearwood. Containing a range of natural essential oils, the Xbox Lynx range comes with a sleek new look and features a body spray, deodorant, and shower gel,” the product line reads.

Xbox ANZ’s head Tania Chee explains that users will be able to “power up” themselves with the products before they head out the door in the morning, so that they smell good all day.

The products will apparently be available in Australia and New Zealand first this July, and could possibly be released in other parts of the world later this year. There’s a very likely chance they could be introduced next week in the Xbox Plaza, which will be open alongside E3 next week in Los Angeles. After all, why not give fans that are attending the Xbox Fanfest the chance to smell like an Xbox rose?

We’ll let you know once an official release becomes available. Now then, Microsoft…how about a Battletoads fragrance while we’re at it…?

Sea of Thieves Has a Limited-Edition Controller with DLC

The new tagline for Sea of Thieves is “Be More Pirate”. And there’s nothing pirates like more than schwag, right? Case in point: this limited-edition Sea of Thieves controller that packs in some DLC for the game along with some other digital goodies.

sea of thieves controller

The controller offers a variety of unique visual features including a deep purple translucent shell, laser-etched barnacles, a glow-in-the-dark skull at the center, and one golden shoulder trigger on the top because why not.

The controller will also come packed with a set of exclusive Ferryman Clothing cosmetics for Sea of Thieves, and 14-day trials of Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass. All for the cost of $75.

The controller will release on February 6th, but you can pre-order it now if you really want.

Our Thoughts

Yeesh. $75 for a controller? That price is pretty steep. But then again, it is a very nice-looking controller. But then again, that is a lot of money to ask for a gamepad, even if it is PC and Xbox compatible. Then again, it is very shiny…

Xbox Details Refund Policies for Marvel Heroes Omega

With the unceremonious shutdown of Marvel Heroes Omega, many players on consoles were demanding refunds. It would appear that at least Xbox players have some timelines laid out in a set of Marvel Heroes refund details posted on the console’s support page.

marvel heroes refund

Here’s the rundown:

  • if you’ve bought any DLC for the game between September 1st and November 29th, you’ll get an automatic credit or refund.
  • If you bought anything between October 31st and November 29th, your form of payment will be credited.
  • If you purchased between September 1st and October 30th, you’re getting a store credit.

The process appears to be automated and should arrive to player accounts by January 31st of this year according to the support page.

While the PlayStation Support site doesn’t have any Marvel Heroes-specific details, players on the game’s subreddit have reported that refunds appear to be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Our Thoughts

And so it goes as the final pages of Marvel Heroes Omega are written. While a similarly automated system for PS4 players would be nice, it appears that console players on both sides are seeing their money back.
