The MMO Alpha and Beta List: September 22, 2017

We finally return to our regularly scheduled quiet period on the MMO Alpha and Beta List. Though this week we did see two games leave the list and launch, Raiders of the Broken Planet and Guardians of Ember. You can find both of these on Steam if you’re curious.

PvP brawler Blast Out started Early Access this week.

Webzen announced that MU Legend’s open beta would begin on November 7th, after having been delayed earlier this year.

Speaking of delays, Dauntless has delayed their open beta until the beginning few months of 2018.

And this week there were two newly announced games. The first is Ironsight, a first-person shooter from Gamigo. The other is Pantropy another FPS, but this one is all about the mechs and keeping the limited resources. Pantropy will be having a Kickstarter in early November, so we’ll be keeping an eye out for more on that.

Just to let everyone know, there will not be a Beta List next week. I’ll be spending the time working on making sure each and every game on the list is correct and up to date. So if you know of any games I need to add let me know in the comments!

MMO Alpha and Beta List

As always you can find everything I listed above and so much more in the lists below. Keep an eye out for the new  flag which will let you know what is new this week.

Ship of Heroes Shows Off an Upgraded Character Creator

Vets of City of Heroes – or most MMOs in general – know that character creation can be about 60% of your starting experience. The new Ship of Heroes character creation demo could possibly raise that to about 70 or 80% as it shows off new features for crafting your perfect avatar of justice.

ship of heroes character creation demo

The dev blog and subsequent showcase video expand on features and footage that was provided at PAX West this year. The new Character Creation Tool (CCT) offers a longer look at the list of Archetypes as well as numerous Primary and Secondary Powers players can select from. According to the dev blog, about 50 of these powers are fully complete.

The showcase also provides a look at the “big guy” character model, as well as an improved camera that zooms in tighter on your avatar’s face in order to help players fine-tune their character’s facial features.

Testing of the CCT is expected to arrive in a couple of weeks according to the post. Until then, you can watch the full character creation demo below.

Our Thoughts

Seriously, though, crafting a superhero or supervillain in CoX was easily the most entertaining aspect for me personally, so watching Ship of Heroes’ CCT in action was certainly a real treat. We’re looking forward to seeing this creator begin testing and for continued updates from the team.

Bluehole Inc. Responds Unfavorably to Fortnite Battle Royale

We were pretty much expecting many game companies to hop on the white-hot battle royale game type train, but we weren’t expecting one of the largest to grump about it. Bluehole Inc., the developers behind the wildly popular PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, has raised “concerns” over the newly-revealed Fortnite Battle Royale game.

fortnite battle royale game

The issue, according to Bluehole Inc., lies in the similarities raised by players between PUBG and Fortnite Battle Royale. Specifically, Bluehole points to Fortnite Battle Royale’s user interface, gameplay and structural replication as examples.

“After listening to the growing feedback from our community and reviewing the gameplay for ourselves, we are concerned that Fortnite may be replicating the experience for which PUBG is known,” said Bluehole VP Chang Han Kim. “We have also noticed that Epic Games references PUBG in the promotion of Fortnite to their community and in communications with the press. This was never discussed with us and we don’t feel that it’s right.”

Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene stated in an AMA two days ago that he wasn’t surprised at the new crop of battle royale titles, but also expressed hope that those developers would “put their own spin on the game mode and not just make a carbon copy”.

According to Han Kim, Bluehole Inc. will “contemplate further action”. As of this writing, there is no official response from Fortnite or Epic Games on the matter.

Our Thoughts

…wait, didn’t H1Z1 start this whole battle royale mode? By the logic Bluehole Inc. is applying, Blizzard should be grumpy at every MMORPG, or League of Legends should “contemplate action” against every MOBA, or Team Fortress 2 should attack Overwatch. What do you think? Does Bluehole have a legitimate concern, or are they just being needlessly upset?

The Three Factions Return to Destiny 2

If you were among those who played the original Destiny, then the group names of Dead Orbit, Future War Cult, and New Monarchy will sound very familiar to you. Yes, Destiny 2 factions are back once again and they’re bringing the opportunity for unique rewards to players of the game once more.

destiny 2 factions

The return of the three factions is heralded with the Faction Rallies event. Starting on Tuesday, September 26th, level 20 players who have completed the game’s main story can sign up for one of the three factions.

Once you’re aligned with your chosen faction, you can earn Faction Tokens by completing public events, exploring Lost Sectors, completing strikes, clearing the raid, or competing in the Crucible. Tokens can be spent on loot packages that include a large assortment of gear, weapons, and Shaders.

Once the Faction Rallies event wraps up on Tuesday, October 3rd, the faction with the most collected packages will offer up a completely unique weapon for sale. Members of the winning faction will be able to purchase the weapon at a reduced cost of 1,000 Glimmer, but the weapon will be sold to the general public at a cost of 50,000 Glimmer.

More information can be read on Bungie’s website, though the post does make references to story spoilers, so be warned.

Our Thoughts

We actually kind of hope that this will become a regular thing. Then again, that hope is really dependent on one’s desire to grind for reputation; an activity that’s not wholly unfamiliar to most MMO players. What do you think about the Faction Rallies event?

Crowfall Outlines its ‘Action Harvesting’ Model

Chipping away at rock for ore or hacking away at trees for lumber are not activities one generally equates with “action”. Regardless, Crowfall’s “Action Harvesting” updates to resource gathering is hoping to inject a little bit more oomph in the collection of raw materials.

action harvesting

While hitting the F key to auto-harvest materias was perfectly serviceable, the devs found that doing so felt out of sync with the game’s more active combat model. To that point, players now have to left-click or hold the LMB in order to harvest. Damage numbers to the target inanimate object will also display and new animations are being introduced as well. “While this may not read as being that different, it is much more responsive and interactive in terms of the way it feels,” explains the post.

Updates to Crowfall’s Power Tray system have also been instrumental in the way harvesting works. Since harvesting tools act similarly to Consumables, players now have a Survival Tray where they can drop in their harvesting tools of choice. Gatherers will now also be able to keep their chosen harvesting implement in their hands the entire time as well as load up multiple tools in the Survival Tray.

Ultimately, the idea is to make harvesting in the game more convenient and more visually engaging. The devs are working on additional tweaks, though specifics on just what those are were not outright detailed. You can read up the complete write-up here.

Our Thoughts

We’re looking forward to seeing how this new harvesting system plays out! While these aren’t precisely incredible changes overall, sometimes changes in perception or how an activity feels can be just as impactful as a major system rework.

By next week, the first post-launch update to Albion Online will be live, and a new Joseph update trailer is offering players a look ahead at all of the new content and refinements that players of the sandbox can look forward to.

joseph update trailer

The video grants players their first look at the new 5v5 PvP arena arriving to Joseph, along with some looks at the rewards players can earn including cosmetics and a new mount. On the subject of release date, Joseph is due to arrive to Albion Online on Wednesday, September 27th. You can take a look at what’s coming by watching the video below.

Our Thoughts

While not a terribly ground-breaking update, it’s still good to see Albion Online get further refinements and quality-of-life additions, and we’re sure that PvP-minded players will have fun in the new Arena while the more PvE-oriented will enjoy the new Expeditions.

Overwatch Imposing Permanent Competitive Bans Next Week

With making Overwatch a less snarly place to play becoming a central focus for the devs in the past few days, the announcement of Competitive Mode bans should probably come as no surprise. That said, a post on the official forums has put salty Comp players officially on notice.

competitive mode bans

Community Manager Josh Engen has offered a lengthy post informing players that permanent Competitive Mode bans will be imposed starting Wednesday, September 27th. The bans will be enforced for those who have earned up to three seasonal bans at any time, meaning seasonal bans do not have to be consecutive. Additionally, permanent Comp Play bans will not decay over time; you get a black mark, it’s there for good.

The post continues to outline behavior that constitutes application of a seasonal ban as well as a link to the game’s code of conduct. You can read the complete announcement here.

Our Thoughts

This is a good first step, but could also lead to its own slew of problems; namely, said permabanned Comp player making life an absolute living hell for those in Arcade or Quick Play. Additionally, our own Overwatch columnist thinks that the devs might be going about this the wrong way entirely. What do you think about this upcoming policy?

The Tyrian Chronicle: Looking Back at the Good and Bad From Guild Wars 2 Heart of Thorns

As I write this there are just a few days left for Heart of Thorns. And you are most likely reading this on the final day. Tomorrow Path of Fire begins and while this week’s article could be dedicated to the news about material storage that for me just came out, I would instead like to take a look back at Heart of Thorns. It has been a long two years since the release of the first expansion was released and what an adventure we’ve been on! Let’s take a look at the good and bad from Guild Wars 2 Heart of Thorns.

Eir’s Death

Good and Bad From Guild Wars 2 Heart of Thorns

Tugging on the heartstrings so hard that we’re still feeling it two years on. I’ll let you decide if Eir’s death was good or bad. To this day, there are still players who are bitter about her death, which to me says something about the writing. What Eir’s death did do, though, is completely overshadow Traherne’s. He may not have been anyone’s favorite character but his death was entirely ignored for nearly a year until…

Knight of the Thorn

A small statue was erected in honor of Marshal Traherne by a fellow Sylvari. At the same time, we were given the opportunity to restore Caladbolg, which was easily the best writing and filled with the best moments from all of Heart of Thorns. Saying goodbye to our old friend once again Traherne got the emotional send-off he deserved.

Bitterfrost Frontier

Guild Wars 2 - Kodan Settlement

I’m all for expanding the world. I love getting new zones and some of them from the living story were really amazing. But by far the biggest disappointment was Bitterfrost Frontier. This zone had the least interesting things to do in it and the story that accompanied it was one of the worst, mostly because of the wildly unpopular character who was the star. Bitterfrost Frontier may be a great place to do farming but I will do everything I can to avoid returning there.

Of all the mechanics introduced in Heart of Thorns, gliding was by far the best. Many, myself included, will go out of our way to jump off any little cliff or hill we can just because it’s so much fun! Why run when you can glide? I have a feeling that mounts are going to be exactly the same too.

Later Cub

See Guild Wars 2's New Revenant Class In Action - - Your Source for MMOs & MMORPGs

Later Cub.

Epic Music

Guild Wars 2 - Tarir

The music for Heart of Thorns is amazing and I am going to miss hearing the Heart of Thorns theme when I log in. Each zone in Heart of Thorns has had at least one piece of music that fits it perfectly. For Verdant Brink it is The Pact Laid To Waste. In Auric Basin it is the theme for Tarir, called Tarir, The Forgotten City. In Tangled Depths, it is quite simply the piece titled Tangled Depths which feels like it is quite heavily influenced by music from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And in Dragon’s Stand, it is the fight music from the battle with the Mouth of Mordremoth. All of these are my favorite souvenirs that I’ll be taking with me from HoT.

Guild Wars 2 Update Delayed - - Your source for MMOs & MMORPGs

A couple of weeks ago I really let my feelings known about Braham in a long, PoF spoilerific article. But if you haven’t read it yet or you want to avoid the Path of Fire spoilers, I’ll give you a TL;DR breakdown. I hate Braham. He’s a whiny child who isn’t deserving of the Eirsson name. His writing has been some of the worst in the last two years of Guild Wars 2. Maybe we’ll get lucky in Path of Fire and get a new Norn to take his place in Dragon’s Watch.

Revenant may not be the most popular class but they’re still a lot of fun to play. As someone who isn’t a minmaxer and doesn’t worry about optimum builds, Revenant is just plain fun. Unrelenting Assault is one of the most entertaining skills in the game, especially when used with Vengeful Hammers from Jalis. Drop the Hammer is also endlessly entertaining. Things are looking pretty good for Revenants in Path of Fire as well, with luck it will revitalize interest in the class.

Camelot Unchained

Cool Image From Camelot Unchained, because really who has a screenshot of a Scribe from GW2?

In the end, Scribe turned out to be a massive disappointment. It relies heavily on having a big active guild supporting you. To make it even worse, those fantastic backpacks are restricted so you almost never see them out in the world. If I had to guess, I would say that the majority of players don’t have a scribe. Personally, I made it to level 7 before I gave up on mine. I would love to see changes made to make Scribe more accessible in the future, but it is far more likely that it will remain in the state it’s in.

Repeatable Hearts

If gliding is the best mechanic to be introduced during the last two years then repeatable hearts are the second best. Repeatable hearts have given every zone they’ve been introduced to replayability, something which core Tyria sorely lacks. I would gladly accept a slowed release schedule of new content if ArenaNet decided to go through the game one zone at a time and make all hearts repeatable, a not so small quality of life change that would be huge for the world. We’ve also seen this replayability spread to Hero Points in Heart of Thorns maps. This way they are always rewarding and people will, hopefully, always be able to find someone willing to help.

Guild Halls

Guild Wars 2

As someone who pretty much exclusively plays in a duo, Guild Halls were hugely disappointing. My husband and I joined a guild just so we would have access to a guild hall. This was just one of the many instances in Heart of Thorns where we have been forced to play a certain way if we want to have access to certain things. For a game that is otherwise incredibly solo friendly, this was a massive disappointment.

Elite Specializations

Elite specs have been a fantastic way to expand on the capability of each class. Everyone has their favorite, mine is Dragonhunter. And everyone has their least favorite, Druid for me. This was also the start of a system that ArenaNet can continue to use for a long time to come. In fact, someone on Reddit recently pointed out that there are 5 more expansions to go until Warriors have every weapon type. Which at the current development rate means we have at least another 10 years of Guild Wars 2. You won’t hear any complaints about that from me!

All in all, I think Heart of Thorns was a big opportunity to learn for ArenaNet and they’re working hard to learn from the mistakes that were made. They’re finding out what the community does and doesn’t like. With that in mind, I have a lot of hope for future expansions.

Have fun in Path of Fire everyone! And I’d like to say in advance a very big thank you to That Shaman, Dulfy, and every single person who contributes to the wiki. You are all the backbone of our community and your hard work will be greatly appreciated in the coming days. Readers, please keep in mind that ANYONE can submit material to the wiki. That can be in the form of screenshots or data. Don’t be afraid if you’ve never used the wiki before, the editors are there to help put things in proper wiki format. Information collecting is the hardest part. See you all in the desert!

Final Fantasy XIV Provides First Details of Patch 4.1

With the tide of war beginning to ebb away after the events of Stormblood, fans are likely curious to know what’s next for Final Fantasy XIV. It just so happens that a new Patch 4.1 teaser site has a couple of answers. Or at least a couple of hints of answers. It’s a wee bit vague, really.

patch 4.1 teaser

The new site is loaded with several new screenshots, artwork, and lore primers for the upcoming patch, which has been subtitled The Legend Returns. As per the usual, the new patch will offer the next story beats of the MMO’s main scenario quests, as well as a new dungeon, the official opening of the Shirogane housing district, and the Return to Ivalice raid, which features guest creators Yasumi Matsuno (Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy XII) and Keita Amemiya (Moon Over Tao, GARO).

Additional details are expected to be released soon, including a trailer for Patch 4.1 next week. The Legend Returns will arrive to players sometime in early October. Until then, you can take a look at the information available as of this writing here.

Our Thoughts

As ever, the content cadence of Final Fantasy XIV continues to shame many other MMOs. We’re definitely looking forward to learning more about Patch 4.1, especially the new raid; considering its backstory and the references to the world of Ivalice, this piece of content could be very intriguing indeed.

EverQuest Announces the Ring of Scale Expansion

The progenitor of the MMORPG continues to grow with the arrival of its 24th expansion. EverQuest: Ring of Scale has been officially unveiled by the game’s producer in her latest letter to the fanbase.

ring of scale

As one would expect, Ring of Scale will continue the story right where Empires of Kunark left off as the Combine will face their final challenge. Players can expect to visit familiar locations as well new areas such as Gorowyn, and look forward to the arrival of new monsters, gear, spells, AAs, and more.

According to the letter, the devs are hard at work on the new expansion and should be ready to announce additional details through the month of October. By mid-October, fans can expect to see pre-orders and beta tests for Ring of Scale go live, and the expansion itself is slated to launch in December of this year.

More information, along with news of a discount for Empires of Kunark and preliminary information about the return of in-game bonuses for the Fall, can be found on the EverQuest site.

Our Thoughts

Can’t stop EverQuest! We’re certain that fans of EverQuest are looking forward to hearing more about this new expansion, so we’ll most definitely keep our eyes peeled for more details as we move into October!
